Perhaps.
Artists who put food on their tables with their art does not want to give it to auction off. Perhaps they want to be paid and then you can do with it what you want.
Perhaps if it's helping Bastion, they wanted a Grayson to step forward and assist with it. The fealty instead of well--- instead of. We will leave that there.
Perhaps even you didn't ask them nicely.
This is all perhaps though.
Perhaps I am wrong.

I am however glad that this learning experience will be remembered. It is the least I can do for one I had the pleasure to work with over a substantial period of time.
Though I will note that you, unlike a distressing amount of the local population, stopped at the first drink.

It may be as pointless as pointing out that an orange is an orange, but only in so far as there is no way it will change the subject matter.

Lord Tomwell is correct in that a 'small sum' of anywhere between 4,500 silver to 5,250 silver coins is not, in fact, a small sum. It is quite a hefty toll, and most commoners beneath us cannot afford to pay such a fee. At that point, it doesn't matter if the coins are going to charity or otherwise. It still removes the ability to afford education to those of a lower status, and restricts it to those who have an amount readily available to them. This does not say that anyone providing a lesson to another should not be compensated for their time and effort. Again, that is the very method that many Scholars of Vellichor make their wages. But that is the beauty of Archscholar Bianca's movement, time and effort. It provides compensation for those who teach, and allows those who cannot afford to pay for education, with that very same education for free.
I would be in agreement with charging these costs of writs or silver to a member of the Peerage, but not to a commoner.

I understand very well that nobility of high rank have many responsibilities that take up their days. If they do not have time for instruction, I wouldn't fault them. Where it seems we differ is in what we believe is the responsibility of the highly ranked towards others. I say this merely as myself, not a representative of the Faith, but I view my oaths of fealty and my nobility as one that requires of me to make certain sacrifices towards those lower ranked than me. Others, of course, must reach their own understanding of their oaths.

If my fortunes ever change, if my time becomes more valuable to me, it will change. Simple as that.
Once again, I am so very happy that I am a commoner. I wouldn't want to go through what nobles do for any amount of silver paid to me.

If the question is one of time, ask the prospective student to help the prospective teacher with the sorts of time-taking tasks that they might be able to assist with. No matter our rank, we all have things that must be done but do not necessarily require doing by someone with our level of knowledge or expertise. If the student manages a few hours worth of work, the instructor has freed up the time to do the teaching.
If the question is one of valuing the lesson, though I am not personally convinced there needs to be a transaction to prove so, perhaps the instructor can ask the student to perform some act of charity on their own. A way to pay it forward. The student can do that in the manner that best suits them - someone poor in silver but rich in other skills could pass on knowledge of their trade to another student in turn. Or donate the amount of silver they deem affordable to a charity of their choice. Or do work in service for one of the Shrines. And so on.
I simply fail to see how making those lower ranked than oneself pay for lessons will solve a problem of having too little time for instruction. Unless the intent is to weed out the less fortunate, and thus have fewer (and only wealthy) requests for teaching to begin with.
