Relationship Note on Raja
(most of the journal is scribbled over as Lord Mattheu is both excitedly rambling and shouting at the scholar who is laughing and trying to convince the lord to be a little quieter.)
Scholar. Did you know of all the amazing places within the city? Sure there's shops and people's homes. And we take them out of the sights, then just look at the bare setting. There's still all of the little places, and not so little places where people meet for food, drink, to talk with each other, to see what beautiful designs are of the city...
... The gardens... and animals within them...
Yes. It all started with a hunt for a golden egg. At first the thought was literally fueled by seeking out a new knife. Then it became a journey to see more of the city. Areas that I knew of? But only really set foot to one spot of. So many beautiful gardens through this city too. Those that are gardening and ensuring the flowers are growing.
And whomever is caring to the animals in the menagerie. I will be making a donation to the zoo. It wasn't meant to disturb all of the animals. There was a moment in which we thought that would be where an egg would be hidden.

There are some friends that will torment you needlessly. Then there are others that get a wild idea and set a golden egg somewhere in the city and you're suddenly finding yourself wandering the city. No necessarily to find it. Though, Scholar. It would be nice to have a new diamondplate knife. I can't say that if I find the egg that I wouldn't seek a piece.
Have you seen Raja's work? Fantastic.
I can say where we did not find the egg. Though I feel that would give an advantage to others that might be seeking the same egg. Thus I can simply leave it as Princess Ann has made sure that I didn't find myself easily lost in our adventures, and if distractions were found. 'Cause you know. The wind can lead you one way then another?
We were quick to be back on track.

A rare woman and one who provides rather enjoyable conversation over drinks. She cares about her people and has views on some things that not all may enjoy but I certainly respect her for speaking her truths.

Doll has met this Culler on friendly terms and found they had much in common. Doll is looking to make things happen in the Lows, and Raja seems eager to encourage moves being made. Doll feels she has a kindred spirit and hopefully a powerful ally in the making. We'll see.

I bought a very nice solid metal mug from Mistress Raja Culler's shop because I liked it, but the more I've used it, the more I've come to realize it really would come in handy in a pinch as a weapon. I personally have never experienced a bar or street brawl but one never knows.

Relationship Note on Raja
That's the funny thing about paths. Sometimes it looks like you've come to a fork in the road, but there's always a third way, even if it takes some searching to find it. What we've got isn't really paths - we're in a forest, and we can go any way we please. Some ways are paths, some are tangles of undergrowth, some are full-on hedges to be cut through. All we can do is choose where we want to go and take the path that looks like it might get us a bit closer, and if there isn't one we're willing to take, we make it.
You and me, we both found a path to surviving and even thriving in our world. We took it, or we died. It wasn't easy, but we both made it out of that maze with its many, many dead ends. So where do you want to go now? Fame? Fortune? Power? Stability? Truth? Freedom? Pick one, pick several, pick all of them if you want, and set out - or don't, and just wander aimlessly. Just remember that if you don't know where you're going, you're never going to get there.
The dangerous bit is that every path demands something of us, and the easier it looks, the more dangerous it'll probably be. I mean, who puts a trap in the undergrowth when there's a nice handy path right there, with a signpost marked 'power' sending folks that way? And there's predators in this forest, always keeping an eye out for the unwary, and occasionally a tree falls. And there's always the paths with a toll, the ones where it looks like there's no other way than to pay up in whatever the path demands. There is always another way, it's just whether it's worth the effort of hacking your way through to find it.
Your paths and your choices are usually only clear when you look back to see which way you've been, and see your footsteps shining bright behind you, illuminating the ways you didn't take and the choices you didn't make. That's when it becomes a path rather than just endless possibility.

It is strange, seeing Arx from the little home you've built me into its mountain, Raja Culler,
The light of the clear spring, with the morning now glowing in the valley across from my window, down from the steep end of the forge's hill. I can hear the noise of bubbling waters rising up from the foaming river-bed below. Birds sing, sometimes more than I'd like them to, and it feels as though a wholesome peace lays on the land. A lie hard to believe, but when oft I wake in the morning, one I find myself oddly visited by.
Our dangerous foray against the Skal'dajans, and the rumors of the growing, crawling darkness assailing the world from every end already seem only but memories of a troubled dream; yet the faces of those passerbies in the docks, fresh from their voyages coming in from the straits, dispel any doubt or hopeful pretension.

Thoughts of... receiving another gift...
Cardin snakeskin is something far too ... rich for my blood. But yet, I find myself wearing these new gloves with a sense of gratitude to Raja Culler for it. What could have turned into an argument or a duel, or something entirely violent, didn't. I had a set of gloves that had belonged to someone she cared for and I returned it at once when I found out.
I had honestly forgotten about it. She didn't, nor did she forget about the promise to replace those gloves.
It's always humbling to be remembered.

I'd worked with Raja when the whirlpool remained in the harbor, and the people of Arx were rioting. She and her family were among those who took decisive action to see that people with the most need did not starve. The fruit and salted fish of Ischia found their way into the hands of the desperate - and not the crooked profiteers - by Raja's expertise and connections.
When one of my own pirates betrayed her oath, Raja was among those who hunted her down. There is a story told of Raja by Captain Tancred - and it is worth noting here that Tancred, unlike Anne, who will embellish any story to make it more appealing for her audience, hates to be the center of attention, and thus speaks only facts, and those very reluctantly. By this good man's account, Raja Culler leapt aboard the betrayer's vessel while Lord Ian was engaged with several members of the crew. She apparently took down one of their best, and clove his head from his body. She raised the blood-spattered trophy high into the air, and her roar terrified the remaining sailors, who threw down their weapons and either surrendered or leapt overboard, lest they be the next to fall to her wrath.
Yet the terrors inspired by Raja are reserved for those who deserve them, and the Liberator did me the honor of accompanying me to our gala in the Golden Hart. Dressed in a gown tailored by the gifted Whisper Ilira, Raja shown brilliantly, and danced with her kin and friends among the great peers of Arx, while Duke Harlan displayed immense generosity, taste and respect for his wife, when he donated a vast sum to acquire the pride of Ischian jewelers for Duchess Lisebet Ashford.
In the struggle to bring order out of chaos, I asked for Raja's help, and she agreed. She spoke to the traders and sailors of the Isle of Markets with candor, and spoke to my enemies in the elemental language of fear. As the wealth of the Saffron Chain pours into Arx through the trusted traders of the Cullers and Seraceni, I raise my glass to Raja, and look forward to our next adventure.
