Relationship Note on Petraea

The Vaevici do not mourn the dead, we instead reflect and weigh their deeds on whether or not it has helped those who live on to be stronger, and celebrate those who have done so. With solemn reverence on behalf of the Vaevici, I'm here to honour the legacy of Tribune Petraea Livy of Cardia and those she represented from far away lands, whose spirit blazed with a fervor that illuminated the paths of those fortunate to cross it. House Vaevici reaffirm our commitments with the Compact and its allies, not in the shadow of grief, but in the light of gratitude for the inferno of courage she has bequeathed us. Tribune Petraea was not just a keeper of flames or secrets; she was a catalyst of an enduring conflagration, one that sparked purpose and valor in the hearts of her compatriots as well as those she helped unseen from afar.

My interactions with Petraea, though infrequent, were profound. Conversations that stoked the embers of wisdom and kinship, and ignited a beacon of knowledge that will guide a lost people through further darker times. Her legacy, deeply rooted in the lineage she comes from, resonates with the essence of her being, a gift that she wielded with benevolence and might. A lesson we all can learn and try to emulate in the near future. I will miss her words and voice and looking at the stars.

We Vaevici acknowledge not the dimming of a flame, but the inception of a legacy as resilient and as pervasive as fire itself. Her sacrifice, emblematic of the eternal dance of flames, has kindled a resilience that will carry on beyond the ephemeral. A spark that has now been lit in many others who live on from her death and they too will carry that fire elsewhere and burn just as brightly. With each act of bravery, every moment of altruistic choice we make, Petraea's essence is sustained and perpetuated. She lives on through us.

In this moment of both sorrow and celebration, we embrace the spirit of Petraea Livy, a spirit that does not waver, a flame that does not falter even if it has faded to embers. May the embers of her spirit rise to the stars to help guide future peoples who might be wandering lost with her legacy to be found again.

Historically, we have declared, "As Arx Endures, We Shall Remember." Yet today, in the spirit of endings and beginnings, and in the indomitable presence of the fire that Petraea Livy has left for a world worth saving no matter if they are kin or stranger, I feel it is better to say "To The Last."

Relationship Note on Petraea

You have died, but your legacy endures, Tribune.

You and I were similar in that we were from other places, representatives of different cultures but you were far better navigating society here in Arx than I. You soared but your passing has made me think about yesterdays, todays and tomorrows. Of legacy, choices and destiny.

Legacy, much like the ember's fading glow from Yesterdays, stands as a silent testament to the unyielding spirit of those who came before us. It carries the weight of their struggles and the brilliance of their wisdom. The Code, a guiding flame, compels us to shield and eternally preserve the memory of Yesterdays, for it is the very foundation upon which our Today stands, defiantly burning amidst the encroaching darkness and cold.

In contrast, Destiny, akin to sparks ascending toward the night sky, beckons to us from the uncharted expanse of Tomorrows. Of what might be, what could be, not what will be. It is the canvas upon which our choices and intentions vividly paint the future. Destiny is not an unchangeable decree, but a realm shaped by the conscious choices of mortals—a reflection of the sparks we send aloft.

Amidst this reflection, I am reminded of our sacred duty, akin to tending to cooling embers, to preserve the memory of Yesterdays. Yet, our purpose transcends mere preservation; it impels us to fuel the fires that burn within us, urging us toward perpetual growth. Stagnation, the enemy of life's gift, must be vanquished as we fan the flames of progress, molding a Destiny that radiates ever brighter.

As I write these thoughts, I reaffirm that our existence embodies the intricate dance of Fire. Let us, therefore, stand as custodians of the legacy of Yesterdays, for it is the enduring ember. Through our actions, we shape the Destiny of generations, sending sparks of hope and illumination to light the path toward radiant Tomorrows. I will miss in this lifetime the discussions we had, but I will look up to the new star and reflect on the whispers from yesterday that we shared and strive to be better. In my own culture, the dead Vaevici are burned at the Temple of Pyros at night so that our pyros can be returned to Sangris and strengthen those who live after us. You live on through others, your death has made us stronger.

Tribune, though you have passed from this realm, your memory remains, for I choose that you have not been forgotten.

Relationship Note on Petraea

Petraea Livy.

Most did not know her face, only her reputation. Many will remember her with suspicion. She was, after all, the Tribune of Cardia. Some will remember her as uncompromising woman of ambition, ready and willing to use every tool in her arsenal if the ends justified the means, and they would not be wrong. That was all a part of her, but it was not what defined her - and I will not pretend I knew her half so well as I would have preferred. I know only what I saw, what I lived, and what I will always remember.

I remember a woman who could spin an intricate, nuanced web or become flash, flame and fury on the field of battle, but stumble when confronted with kindness. The sort of woman who wouldn't know what to do with herself if you hugged her, but who cared with a quiet ferocity that even she didn't seem to recognize. Her actions always spoke more than she ever knew, ever guided for the sake of the future, for the sake of family, even those who have long since passed.

I remember how she cared for a scrawny whip of a girl and made sure she was fed, clothed, and always had a safe place to rest. Plucked her up from a life scrabbling for coppers, shivering towards a cold death in some godsforsaken back alley in the parts of the Lowers that few would ever care to visit. She was clumsy. Awkward. She often struggled with how and when to show her love, but she kept her promises. She kept that girl safe, warm, and never wanting for a meal ever again. How she saved her life, time and time again, whether or not she knew it. That was the sort of woman Petraea was.

I remember just how much she sacrificed, what she left undone, what she meant to those she left behind to carry on after her. She left this world with an unequivocal act of heroism, something that has ever been second nature to her. So many times, she threw her life into peril to help those who may never know she ever lifted a finger. That she would never suffer past atrocities like Bastion and Artshall to happen again. She helped the armies of Arx win the day on the field of battle time and time again, until her last breath.

She burned brighter than any flame, lived a bold life, without compromise. Her long shadow was a place of safety for those who loved her, and a thing to be feared by those unseen threats in the darkness, keeping them exactly where they belonged. She held back the tides, and gave us all the gift of time, hoping that we would be strong enough to meet it when it arrived.

She trusted that we would live - and I hope to prove her that her trust was not misplaced. We live in a time where nothing feels certain, and it's altogether too easy to fall to sorrow, to be a prisoner to doubt. We must all face the things that are to come not with terror, but as she would. With fire in our hearts and fangs bared, even when the odds feel insurmountable.

Live. Fiercely. Brightly.

Look ever toward the horizon. Extend a hand to those you can lift up. Protect those that you care for. Do not shy away from doing what needs to be done. This is the Dream that Petraea gave her life to protect - and it is worth fighting for, always.

I will remember. Forever.

Relationship Note on Petraea

With the many reports that have come in, we have come to the conclusion that Arvani forces were a credit to their Compact and their peers. Many brilliant defenses, many astounding offenses; sacrifices were made on a grand scale, adaption to unexpected situations maneuvered with grace.

But the detail that has stood out to me time and time again, as one Ambassador from a nation foreign to these soils might see of another, it was Lady Petraea Livy and her collection of soldiers that have gone the most unremarked.

An ally who when called met the enemy of the Compact fearlessly, who lost people on the field and still fought on. Perhaps I am biased, perhaps I recognize only a small part of her greater gifts, but I felt the need to remark upon the bravery of the Cardian Ambassador Petraea Livy and the sacrifices she made. Though I do not know her, I suspect her efforts were understated, and that is a great shame.
