Relationship Note on Magnus

I lost my friend. I mean, he's been busy. Marquis always are. But I remember the times when he was fun and easy to talk to. We had some not smart ideas you know. I already told you about the sauna in the summer plan. It was AWFUL, scholar. AWFUL! But funny.

The way he died, I couldn't imagine. I will be there to help the Stahlbens in any way I can. To stop whatever it is that's coming.

Relationship Note on Magnus

If what you say is true, Lord Marquis, then it serves all to remember the baseness of war.

War is the true nurse of a noble's self-aggrandizement. For a nation in war: an army is to be created and directed by its lord's will; the public treasures are unlocked and used by its lord's will; the honors and emoluments of office are multiplied and subject to its lord's will; and the patronage and spoils for the victorious are reaped and enjoyed at its lord's will. In war, by our praise and beliefs, laurels are gathered and bestowed to whom prevails. And so, it is obvious that the strongest passions and most dangerous weaknesses -- ambition, avarice, vanity, pride -- are all in conspiracy against the desire and duty of peace.

When the sword is once drawn, the passions of men and woman observe no bounds of moderation. Any suggestion of wounded pride or instigation of resentment will carry a nation to any extremes necessary to avenge the affront or to avoid the disgrace of submission. For those in the Compact who bend to the Thirteen's traditions is there a fragile peace in the form of honorable resolution, but outside of the same boundaries there is no such satisfaction. And for so long as there are those who will not follow such paths the art of war shall always be an important element of statesmanship, one that is often forgotten in the intrigues of politics in peace-time.

Peace or war will not always be left to our option, and however moderate or unambitious we may be, we cannot count upon the moderation, or hope to extinguish the ambition, of others.

Relationship Note on Magnus

Today my husband informed me that the way they woo in the north is to tolerate death threats from their wives.

I suppose this is lucky for me, as I have mentioned drowning, suffocating, stabbing, poisoning and bear wrestling as all possible activities for today.

Relationship Note on Magnus

I have been married almost a full week, and these are things I have learnt so far.

1. My husband likes to sleep with his axe nearby. Sneaking into bed could prove hazardous to my health.

2. The threat to my rabbit being eaten has been increased tenfold. I have heard the staff muttering about the wild food in the house.

3. I have learnt numerous bad words in Northern Shav when I tried to change the decor from black and white to something more bright and inviting, like pink.

Today I have learnt that mammoths do not like their tales being tugged. You can get stomped.

Same can be said for bearded Counts. A tug of their beard may land you up high where the air is so thin.

Relationship Note on Magnus

I recently had the honor of meeting Count Magnus Stahlben, the leader of a newly-sworn prodigal House in the Northlands. Seraph Ailith and I will soon be undertaking missionary work for the Faith in his lands, but first we’re studying his people and traditions. They are very different things from the ones I grew up with, and the ones I’ve adopted since bending the knee, but there are many commonalities I think we can work with. Including ones that may strengthen the Compact as a whole, once we fully understand them. He strikes me as a man of formidable strength and character, who’s made a bold step to do right by his people. And stand against our mutual enemies.

I’m filled with purpose as I begin this work. My faith was, for me, one of the few things that made sense when I first became prodigal. It has been the roots on which my life here has grown. I do not always care for the way some attempt to bring the scholarship of Faith to the others. So, if I think I can do it better, I’d best get to work. The gods belong to all, even if we do not fully understand the ways in which they show themselves in the hearts of strangers.
