Relationship Note on Lazarus

This is not the resolution I wanted or foresaw. I am sorry, Lazarus, that your story ended this way. You deserved far better regardless of the last words we exchanged.

I didn't realize someone could be -that- stupid. You learn something new everyday.

Relationship Note on Lazarus

Lazarus Mercier insulted my mother publicly and only withdrew his insults under threat of a call for a Champion. She named him a coward, publicly, in these pages, and he accepted the name, because he could not do otherwise and refuse the duel.

My mother is dead now. Murdered by poison.

But I say now on her behalf and on my own that Lazarus Mercier remains a coward, in perpetuity.

Relationship Note on Lazarus

I love my brother from the depths of my heart; I do.

I can even put myself in his position and understand his reaction for the slight that he feels like (a careful omission, here) caused.

However, I am now overly fretful.

Also, boyo and all you others, I am and always have been an upstanding citizen of this fine city. I will be contacting a Champion for your implied insult that /I/ would be a /criminal/.

Relationship Note on Lazarus

Child, I do not know who taught you to read, but never once did I wish for a position of prominence in the guild. I have my own patron; I see to my own needs; I have never asked anyone for anything.

I do not need the nonsense that comes with the guild nor a high position in it. Nor do I need your nonsense. I won't pay dues to any guild that has a child like yourself high in the organization, who thinks he knows anything about what it's like to be a /true/ crafter.

For that matter, consider yourself banned from my shop.

For that matter, consider Lord Victus' ban lifted. I invite the bastard lord, actually, to come seek me out for some heavily discounted bit of clothing. Whatever he would like. If Joscelin will work with someone so closely who hates me so, then I shall do the same!

Relationship Note on Lazarus

I admit, I haven't talked to Lazarus Mercier in years. We knew each other as children, what with the Mercier Vineyard so close to Ashford Keep.

I'm actually a little surprised he remembers me kindly; I'm afraid I was rather horrible to him during my prank-adventure phase. Poor Lazarus ended up the target of one of most notable and deeply convoluted pranks, in fact. (Harlan, if you're reading this... yes, I do mean the one that got me in trouble with father. The one involving the watchtowers, a rope trap, a waterskin, and a number of other items.)

Still, he's interested in establishing closer business ties to Ashford, and he did send me a tea I haven't had in a very long time. And it would be nice to catch up with a childhood acquaintance.

Though, admittedly, it is a bit tempting to pull a prank on him. Just for old time's sake...

Relationship Note on Lazarus

I would say I am grateful for my cousin Lazarus taking me in, but I feel that would be something of a falsity born of unnecessary politeness. My Father though is earnestly thankful for it, and told me countless times to reiterate that fact. I am however grateful Lazarus is amenable to that which the rest of my family is not. He has even said he wishes to have a laboratory and nursery built for me so I can continue my work. Likely as a means of expanding the family’s market further. I couldn’t care less, but I look forward to having a private place where I can study and work in peace.

I never particularly spent a lot of time with him as a child, and recall him as the golden child of the family. But he thus far has been accepting of my pets in the Manor, which I am happy with, even when they are let out to roam. I cannot promise Goliah will stop hiding in the paperwork on his desk; she seems to have made herself at home there.

Relationship Note on Lazarus

I kind of stand by the fact that whiskey can pair with just about anything, but I imagine this Mercier brother might say the same thing about his teas. I've floated through a lot of different circles over the years, but I suppose I just never spent time around tea drinkers. There's a whole etiquette associated that continues to elude me. The disdain for me adding a delicious bit of whiskey to my leafy little drink was as if I called his loved one corn smut or something. Yes, corn smut. The man's so knowledgeable that he actually knows that this is a thing.

If anyone has seen his brother, Sir Silas, try to sell things via a sales pitch -- they should probably know that he doesn't. His skills either show themselves, or they don't, and everyone goes on with their day without fanfare. Master Lazarus was the opposite. I'm fairly certain he could spend a whole day talking about the properties of dark leaf versus ... well, other leaf teas. He deserves credit for it. He's done his research and is cut from that kind of cloth.

A man with a dedicated eye for new things to sell and a willingness to do it well and thoroughly isn't that bad of an acquaintance to have. Just, maybe we should meet over alcohol instead.

Relationship Note on Lazarus

What self-respecting tailor would give this man what he asked for?

He asked for a fancy suit of fine cloth, silk, and /feathers/. /Feathers/. In the colors of gold, light blue, /and/ purple.

He must be kidding. What is he, a peacock?

He can come back to me with a more reasonable request or not. I will only make clothes that will flatter my clients, not turn them into jokes.

Not unless they pay me a lot more.

I do not know Goodman Mercier well but he is MOST generous with his wines and I must say, they are the best in the land I've had in my entire life. I have no doubt, before long they will become a staple within our Household.

Relationship Note on Lazarus

It appears my father has taken to bed with his illness and my brother has been given official reign of the family business. He has arrived in Arx, with his small army of servants and tons of furniture.

He means to "modernize" the business by moving away from the vineyards and instead producing wheat and herbs so we may enter the whiskey and tea markets as well. It is not an unsound idea - wheat is far cheaper and more reliable to produce - but I suspect our uncles will protest the change as old men stuck in their ways are wont to do. I had just started to freely distribute our wines, too!

I am glad to see him, though. It has been a few good years since we've had the opportunity to sit and chat, let alone live in the same dwelling. Being a good merchant requires constant travel but he may get some rest yet.
