You don't spend time in the north, do you? Because fighting to survive is exactly what we do. Learning how to use a weapon at a young age really helps with that. As well as helping get us food. We also plant our own food, so that knocks off the farming part too. I don't know how things work in the Lyceum, not really. But I'd be happy to sit hear about it!

I was referring to the Slaver, not Skald. I've been thinking on a recent reading, the relevant bit: "...any sort of grouping of humans implies a dehumanization that is how the Tyrant of Chains draws its strength."

That same text also calls for such groupings to keep individuals in mind. So who is making the call for unity matters.

I'd add that *an* opposite of unity is strife. Another is dissent or disagreement, which could be strife, but doesn't have to be - like this.

It was a thought exercise in extremes. Unsurprisingly ill-fitting as extremes tend to be. I have a lot to learn and welcome constructive exchanges.

Relationship Note on Harlex

I have known the Sword of Lenosia, Harlex Valtyr for a little over four years. I first met him when I embarked on an expedition with the Physician's Guild after Rukhnis had first expressed an interest in joining. We traveled to a village called Eresport, and I fought by Harlex's side as we evacuated the party from relentless enemies.

We have, on occasion, met at festivals or trained together in Arx - the outcome of those duels I hardly need to relate here. I have always found him to be a consummate warrior: not unfriendly, but not one to relish unnecessary conversation - at least with me. His swordsmanship is worthy of the greatest admiration and emulation, and I have studied his technique as best one might while fighting desperately. He has written some in the Whites about the techniques he favors, including a lethal slashing attack made while drawing a weapon from its scabbard. I have had great success with this technique in the field. Deor, my longtime retainer who left my service to attend Lady Genevieve Stahlben, used to call the technique "Wolf's Fang."

I had a recent encounter with the Sword of Lenosia in which, had I been in his position, I would have seriously considered killing me. Instead, after briefly attending to his ward, he dragged me to safety, with the words: "Come poet. You've a verse or two left to left to scribe." Such is the mercy of one unshaken by fear. I mean to make the most of it by quill and sword.

Prince Alecstazi fought well but in the end I was victorious.

I was not so fortunate against the next Challenger, Harlex, Sword of Lenosa. His skills have not been over estimated. I can take pride in myself for the good showing but in the end I was not able to best his superior skill. I was honored to give the Trident into his hands.

I'm not certain what was more embarrassing, just how hard he can hit a man in steel, or the fact that such a spar was so decisively in his favor. To my credit, I did manage to penetrate his defenses despite his speed, but had it been actual fight to first blood, it still would not have changed the outcome. Like a pack of hunting dogs surrounding their kill, he is, and it was all I could do to fend him off until he quit playing with his food. It really is worse, knowing that it's coming.

I can certainly see why he was named the Sword of Lenosia.

I wonder how he would fare at my morning drills, when I lead them. The lady with whom he is acquainted certainly seemed amenable to helping with the shaming part of it. Something to ponder, while seeing to this bruising on my shoulder.

It's to Harlex Valtyr, Captain of the Crimson Blades and Sword of Lenosia, whom I owe a great many thanks to. Were it not for his support, House Champagne might not have been successful in our endeavors to secure vital trade routes between the Oathlands and Crownlands.

We were also able to put an end to violent men of House Beaucage who sought to ride down the prodigals fleeing for their lives, aid a group of Knights of Solace, and so much more. I shudder to think what the outcome of my journey would have been without him.

I do not begrudge how people choose to spend their time. But there is a difference between being a warrior and knowing how to use a weapon.

Relationship Note on Harlex

Captain Harlex's words in the Whites have given me cause for reflection, as a fellow leader of men and women.

Do I love my soldiers and rangers the way I should?

They who owe their fealty and have sworn their blades to Blackram are a stubborn lot; they come from families of unpolished goatherders, rough-and-tumble miner folk, and those who thought they'd find a hard-won freedom in the Stoneburner Hills -- and succeeded, I like to think.

They stride as tall and wide as any of us who actually carry the family name.
They hit their stone-hard heads on doorframes, same as I.
The furniture and dishware wherever they visit probably feel made for children.
Horses of any but the largest, strongest breeds take one look at us, lay their ears back, and bare their teeth.

(...the world of men was not made for giants, I'm afraid.)

Do I love them, as they deserve? They lay down their lives for me, am I showing them how much I value that? My own cousin Gaspard serves among them, but do I treat the rest of them like family?

I certainly love our home, I've wandered it my whole life, and my personal journals are filled with notes and rough sketches of every tree and leaf, every hawk and wolf and elk, I'm sure twice over.

I must spend more time among those who deserve it most, they who lay down their lives for my House, and make sure I am showing them the same devotion.

Thank you, Captain Harlex, for sharing your philosophy...it's given me much to chew on.

A story you might enjoy, my friend.

Wolves that have lost their packs mature into harder and hungrier beasts than their brothers and sisters that know the pack. One such wolf decided that, to survive, he would become the hardest and hungriest of them all. He traveled the world, collecting scars and collecting kills until he had finally distinguished himself as the deadliest wolf found the world over.

As such, he was brought before the richest Prince of the land, to display his prowess for royal eyes. As he approached the throne, he saw one of those pampered little lap dogs that fine people like to keep near them, staring down at him from atop her silken pillow. Yet, as he drew closer, he realized that he recognized those yellow eyes, those sharp teeth! This was no lapdog. This was a wolf, just as he was!

As he drew closer, he growled under his breath so the Prince could not hear him, "Sister, how have you let yourself become so soft and weak? How can you lower yourself to sit upon this Prince's knee when you could be the Queen of the Forests, wandering and nurturing your pack?"

The lapdog smiled, hiding her sharp teeth. Her golden eyes glinted beneath a mop of curled and carefully brushed fur. A jeweled collar wrapped around her neck. She was well-fed, well-groomed. The Prince, as if unable to stop himself, reached out to stroke her silky fur. "Oh, old wolf," she said with a smile, "there are many ways to survive."

Folk good with words like things settled with words.

Folk good at killing like things settled with killing.

Folk selling swords like things settled by folk buying swords.

To my recollection, some of the women in the Isles liked to spread mud over their faces and lie for long periods of time. Supposedly, it was to remove blemishes on their skin and prevent wrinkles.

I have little need for such things, nor do I know for certain whether it works. But wrinkles have been a rarity on the women I have seen during my stays in Maelstrom, so take it as you will.

The wolf is often thought of as a dangerous creature.
It hunts and slinks about at night, hunting its prey.
They speak of vicious snarls, teeth and claws.
No one speaks of how it protects its pack, loving family.
No one speaks of how they mate for life, devoted partners.
Like the wolf, you are more than you seem.
