The charming and self-possessed Countess Carita Darkwater has seen fit to take me under her wing as her protege. Once this conflict in the Isles is resolved, I hope I can make her time worthwhile as I begin to take my newly constructed caravel, the Intrepid, in search of new lands for Blackshore.

The Countess has a fascinating idea for warning systems - I must admit we see fewer pirates in Tyde waters than others, but it is a sensible idea and one we will participate in. Especially with the Eurusi near. Tyde Isle is one of the larger islands in the Isles, so this may well require me to think about what we can do inland. My favourite part of the islands, after all.

Dearest Lady Carita!
Oh my gosh, oh dear, oh me, oh my.
Here I was, finding peace in the Gardens once again and must have dozed off only to awaken buried alive under an enormous pile of ROBES that seem to have been fashioned out of NOBLE SACRIFICE (somehow). Anyway, I can only surmise that this is some kind of traditional Thraxian message of discontent that I never quite grasped.
I DO apologize. Please do not bury me under robes again.

Darkwater has always been important to Kennex, but I feel like we've grown closer as houses since Carita took over. Perhaps it's because she's a lot easier to talk to than her predecessors.

I do not know what I did to deserve such good fortune but it must have been something exceptionally heroic. Countess Carita Darkwater has agreed to be my patron and help guide my future. She is such a source of inspiration and if I am able to accomplish even a small fraction of what she's been able to achieve, I will consider my life a success.

Why don't crabs have eyebrows? Mangata took them away because they were irresponsible with them.
My protege's daughter spent some time with me while her mother was in Maelstrom. Not all of it, otherwise I might not have survived. I never realized a child could have so many questions in them as Nerissa Darkwater does. I started running out of real answers long before she started running out of hard questions. In the end, I turned the tables on her and started asking the questions. I'm a wiser man now than I was before.
Did you know owls are not turtles? It means they're active at night. I have it on good authority.
She was rather taken with the large painting of Queen Alarice astride a golden-feathered griffin. Questions about Alarice were mostly easier to answer than questions about griffins, though we did make the attempt to hunt one down in the mansion. I thought for sure there would be at least one hiding somewhere, under a bed perhaps or in the kitchens. Alas.
After she was gone, I searched the wine cabinets in a last ditch effort. No griffins, either, but I found some memories worth keeping.

Traditionally, I never really think about sitting and writing at length in my white journal, but I felt moved to record my protege's noble sacrifice. I know all too well of the plight of the former Countess, Venta. The desire to retire to a beach is very strong. I quite literally dropped my wine when I heard Countess Carita had taken on the burden and let Venta off to go do as she wishes.
I'm exceedingly proud of her. I always tell her, do as I say, not as I do. That's really taking her far!
I'm confident the new Countess has what it takes to see through the work she started as a Voice, which has already been considerable.

It has been a bit of time since I sung the praises of anyone. So I feel it good to sing the praise of someone I've come to admire quite a bit in Lady Carita Darkwater.
In a short time she has already proven her effectiveness to House Thrax with her solid grasp on income. That and she's a pretty sweet thing too. Glad to have her on board.
