Relationship Note on Adalyn

In my capacity as both a Princess of House Valardin and as House Valardin's Minister of Population, I have had the opportunity to spend time in the domains that are vassals of the Oathlands' Great House. In those domains, I have seen many things, enjoyed many customs, and met many upstanding and honorable people. I hold some of them exceptionally close: for example, my proteges, Lady Appolonia Blanchard; Lady Veronica Keaton, my fellow Disciple of the Sentinel; and Marquessa Teagan Blackram, with whom I am close enough that I have earned an "unofficial" seat at House Blackram's table.

I do not have the capacity to take on another protege, but I am nonetheless honored to find myself seated at another House's table as a friend and ally. I admire House Clement's drive, in taking the once-abandoned swath of Duskshire and transforming it into a growing Barony. I admire Baron Norwood's steadfast and thoughtful leadership. I also admire his tenacity, for I have never seen a man go flying quite as far, or land quite as badly, from the saddle of a horse as Baron Norwood did when he lost a jousting match to my lover. It was a truly astonishing sight, to see a human body sail through the air like that... and then to get up, under his own power. I would not have been able. I would have laid there and wept until the Mercies rendered me unconscious for the good of their own ears. But I digress.

I admire much about House Clement, but perhaps what I admire most is its Voice, Lady Adalyn. I am not ashamed to admit in the Whites that I wish that I could be more like her. There is something inside of her, some spark to her soul, that is innate, unable to be taught, unable to be learned: it simply IS. She is bold, adventurous, unconquerable, and at the same time empathetic and kind. The Sword of Duskshire has the confidence in her sword-arm to cut through her own worries and second-thoughts and gallop ahead, toward glory, and I watch with admiration and, as much as I try to swallow it, a tiny bit of envy.

We found another foe for you to practice against. Maybe I'll spar with Raven in a less well watched exhibition. My ego may not suffer my loss.

Relationship Note on Adalyn

When you leap from a cliff into the sea and feel your stomach lurch at the height of your leap, your instincts care decidedly little that the waters you're plunging in to are new.

It only sees before it the plummet which it knows could bring harm.

We are not meant to be ruled on instinct alone, but neither are we intended to ignore it. Whatever is coming next, keep your wits about you.

Standing still may not be an option, but trust in the part of you that begs you caution as the trajectory of your actions urge you forward.

Congratulations to Lady Adalyn for an excellent performance at the Joust, and thanks to Cristoph for keeping the sport running so smoothly.

Gloria was truly honored on this day.

Best two out of three, next time.

I don't even like jousts, but that was a thing to see. You were glorious.

That Lady Adalyn Clement is old enough to get married seems incredibly surreal to me. I guess I really am starting to get old. I'm sure it's more surreal for Norwood. Sorry, friend.

The afterparty - what little I got the chance to participate in - for your wedding, was absolutely wonderful.

I hope the evening that followed was equally wonderful.

Relationship Note on Adalyn

Finally and at last, two wishes were granted pertaining to Lady Adalyn Clement:

Firstly: I had the wonderful occasion to meet her father, Baron Norwood Clement, whom I find utterly genuine and kindhearted, caring and concerned about the welfare of his daughter and of his family. I have nothing but great respect and fondness for this man of whom I've heard so much; and I hope to know him better.

Secondly: At last, Adalyn and I met on the sands for a spar. Light and stars, that woman is /fierce/! And strong! Though I was able to best her with my speed and agility - for a time, in the end, her power simply overwhelmed my own.

I am encouraged by Admiral Domonico to /run/. Gods and stars, how I hate running. I will, instead, climb trees and walls in an attempt to improve my strength. ...After this horrid cold weather has passed, I think. For now, the libraries and bookshelves are so very much more tempting.

Swimming, perhaps more often, will do as well. So much better than /running/.

Relationship Note on Adalyn

Weeks ago I went with Lady Jael, Lord Kedehern, and Lady Shae to try to round up some of the wild horses that live within Duskshire.

They were a wild bunch, but there was one in particular that caught my eye. (And threw me from his back, I would do him no honor to not mention this fact.) He was no horse though, but a long eared mule that strongly favored his horse ancestor. He was tall and proud as any amount, and smart to boot in knocking me off his back.

This inspired a desire to perhaps tame more of this herd, or breed and tame the younger ones to begin a line of mules.

"But Papa," my daughter Adalyn said, "You can't breed a line of mules!" Of which she is right. However, with the right progenitors I think we could make a solid breeding stock in mules. Horses aren't as sturdy, and donkeys can be dull.

A steady mule however? Very solid.

Now I just need to catch the rest of that herd.

Also, no, the will eat from FIELDS. My daughter lives under the threat of her life if she should let one of them into my garden.

Eddard too. Now that I think of it.

My daughter is very correct and I have no shame in admitting this.

I will confront hundreds of human foes over the prospect of another mythical beast that should remain in the stories we tell our children to get them to obey.

The centipedes were enough for me for an entire lifetime, and they were only the most recent nightmare before my sword.

Relationship Note on Adalyn

#5

Mistress Adalyn Clement, a sellsword of the Valorous Few and presumably the heir to the Barony of Duskshire, came to see me. We talked of various things. I asked her the question: "What does being a soldier mean to you?"

She explained that it was the art of the duel that had initially drawn her to a martial lifestyle, and that the skills were transferrable to a living as a mercenary.

In the end, her answer was simple enough: Money, glory, and the thrill of danger.

It is an interesting perspective. Soldiering feeds many mouths, even in peace-time. But the mercenaries are usually hired for shorter terms, and specific campaigns. Though I suppose they see more of them.

Thank you, mistress Adalyn.

Relationship Note on Adalyn

My only daughter,

Life has the strangest way of twisting and turning. I cannot imagine how your mother would have reacted to what we have become.

I have not always been the most supportive of your choices. If given my preference you never would have picked up a sword. It would have been a relief off of my mind if you had joined a more gentle profession. You have chosen to become a warrior though, and I have chosen to support you as well as I can.

My advice, perhaps, is weighed less these days. With that said however, I do have a hope to share. I hope that you never find joy in the taking of another's life. There is satisfaction to be found in physical prowess. There is pride to be taken in one's skills. There is honor in serving in a fashion which protects and defends the innocent from those who would seek to destroy them.

There is no honor in killing, and to imply even minute enjoyment in the taking of another life is abhorrent. It is my hope that you never feel joy when you consider the taking of another's life.

Your father,
Norwood Clement

Relationship Note on Adalyn

I have thought long and hard about this, but I feel I must speak out with some words of wisdom about life that my father, a proud beekeeper, shared with me.

For one, beauty is in the eye of the bee-holder. Bee open to see it.
Bee positive, there are always those who will buzz negatively. Don't let them get into your bonnet (or hat).
Nobles I know this counts less for you, but when you marry, bee sure that your spouse will be your honey forever.
Bee sure your wife is your queen, the center of your home, and the bearer of all of your children.

These are only some of the words that I hive, and dearest Adalyn, if you read these, I do appologize in advance for any cringing you might do.

Since arriving with Duke Cristoph at Setarco I've heard word that my daughter Adalyn lives.

I'll take this thought to bolster me up as we prepare for the battles soon.
