House Velenosa has enjoyed a profitable alliance with House Thrax for generations. My own beloved cousin, Princess Jaenelle, was born of that family. One of my dearest friends, Princess Donella, is of the bloodline as well. I have both political and personal relationships within House Thrax and within the Mourning Isles in general. I have every reason to want to see House Thrax succeed and find a solid footing within the Compact.

Which is why I find it disheartening to hear that members of that fealty are not just criticizing the prayers of an Abandoned girl, but going so far as to seek to boycott her business as well. Why? Because she didn’t say the politically correct thing? She was not raised at Court to know how to gild her tongue so as not to hurt your feelings. Because she was touched by Mangata? I would think that those of the Mourning Isles would be more eager to connect with such a person such a short time after the defilement of the Shrine of Mangata and the loss of lives and ships in our very own harbor.

This boycott will cause little, if any, harm to Mistress Penrose’s business. She is talented and those who choose not buy from her will be quickly replaced by the many that are seeking her out. No, the harm that this boycott might do is against the Thrax fealty.

You see, whether you realize it or not, conversations are being had about Thrax’s place amongst the people of the Compact. Thoughts are being thought. Questions being asked. Let’s face it, given the actions of Prince Abbas, many have questioned whether there is a place for that kind of horror in the world we are all trying to create. Do you think that by ostracizing an Abandoned seamstress or even trying to imply that a -Palace Seraph- is playing false with the gods that those who are having these thoughts and conversations are viewing such actions favorably?

Nearly every House in the Compact has horrors that lurk in their history. Except perhaps for House Valardin, but I would contend that an excess of honor is a burden in and of itself. Most of us have blood staining our names, but I don’t think that excludes people from learning from their mistakes and striving to be better. I believe that House Thrax is capable of becoming more than blood-thirsty savages. I look at Princess Fatima and her recent words on this very subject as one who gives me hope that I’m not wrong about House Thrax, that the Mourning Isles and those that rule it have a place within the Compact.

It won’t be easy. Sometimes, it will mean making an apology that is never accepted by those hurt most. Sometimes, it will mean facing the reluctance and lack of trust that many have as they wait to see what House Thrax and those that are loyal to it choose to become in the coming years. The eyes of the Compact are on House Thrax and the Mourning Isles. Do you really want -this- to be the event associated with you?

Relationship Note on Talen

You needn't offer marriage advice to anyone, you cur! You are a living, breathing example that better men use on how -not- to treat their wives!

Oh for the love of...

As a personal favor to me, if any of you reading this have received a portrait, miniature, or other likeness of me as part of potential betrothal negotiations in the past, please send a message to my husband, Prince Talen Velenosa.

I am trying to prove a point.

House Velenosa offers its deepest condolences to House Thrax on the losses that have been sustained.

Ships can, and will, be rebuilt. Loved ones, not so much.

As a House that has also suffered unconscionable loss, you have our sympathy.

Donato Velenosa.

Truthfully, I expected you to be a bit more of a tyrant, given your paternal heritage. Yet, contrary to my expectations, you are mostly quiet unless you are hungry. Usually, I find you just staring at everything with those bright blue eyes so intently as if you are determined to understand the world around you. In almost every way, you have been a surprise.

Though, I suppose you -are- only a few weeks old. Plenty of time to grow into your father's legacy.

It's the first day of the new year. I was assured that you would be here by now.

What in the Abyss are you waiting for?

I'm not saying that it's not a very lovely, well-made wheelbarrow, but it is STILL A WHEELBARROW.

You could have asked for a lovely litter.

Or perhaps a well-appointed push chair.

But no, you asked for a wheelbarrow.

Do you see why no one bats an eye when I pay people to fight you?

The sound of several pounds of steel armor crashing into the ground after being dropped off the balcony is amazingly satisfying. The only thing that might be more satisfying is if the owner of said armor was still wearing it while it was totally accidentally dropped over the side of the balcony.

It seems to me that the journals are specifically for expressing opinions and thoughts, whether we necessarily agree with them or not. Particularly personal reflections of perhaps one of the most important events to have happened in the past few hundred years. Funny how that works.

That said, the wedding was lovely. The spiders were amusing (but I'm quite a fan of them in general). The Queen is beautiful and seems very serene, but I suppose after a few thousand years of living, you stop being stressed out over the more mundane details that we mortals tears ourselves to pieces over. I managed to stay at the reception long enough to give our gifts before I remembered that trying to socialize while 84 months pregnant just makes me tired and ill-humored.

Noodling? Cornholing?

That's adorable.

In the south, we play very different... 'games'.

Relationship Note on Anze

Prince Anze is a bit of a fish out of water. I cannot think of a man that epitomizes everything I've ever heard about the North more. Yet, here he is, about to marry into the Lyceum. Perhaps I should take him under my wing, make a project of him. Hm.

Of course the White Journals aren't for detailing sexual exploits or making threats. Clearly, Vellichor gave us this gift to publicly shame others who choose to write about things that we don't find personally interesting. A much better use of the space.

I'm rather of the mind that historians of the future and our descendants would rather see that we were human and ridiculous and had a sense of humor when considering ourselves. Besides, I was told once by a very wise man that Vellichor wants ALL of our reflections, even the ridiculous things, even the sappy love poetry, even the terrible jokes. Shouldn't the legacy we leave be one of us as we really were instead of some sanitized version that is noble and dignified yet lacks even a spark of life in it?
