Even though our houses have long had to deal with one another and even though I am to marry in to Velenosa, I do not know many well. I have only recently spoken to Princess Eleyna for any length of time, but she has left me with a favorable impression: bright and very loyal to her family.

I have found a singular person in the Compact that sees the world exactly as I do, it seems. I feel I may call her a friend, but it is more than friendship. To find someone that you can work with so closely, that you can share your every thought with, because they already know it?

It is easy to see the power and beauty of a bonfire. It roars. It radiates heat, demands attention with grasping, reaching flames. A bonfire says, "Watch me, or pay the price." And we watch the bonfire, entranced by the scarlet and the gold, and the brash willfulness of its presence.
It is harder to attend to the beauty of the deepest rivers. From afar, they can appear still, remote, and quiet. But the river dances, down where no one else can see, twisting and tumbling over itself in fast, graceful currents that the sun never quite reaches. The river works, doing its duty on the surface, and carving its own way down below, moment by moment, one grain of sand at a time. The river's beauty is immense and enduring, and worth attending to.

My cousin is cold, like starlight -- a distant, beautiful thing. I grew up with her. Played beside her, as a child. We are family. Through every loss and hurt, we are bonded -- and she has had to carry the burden of so much loss and hurt. So much more than I have lost. Than I could imagine losing. I do not like to see her grief turned against her. Black widow, indeed. It is no wonder she is cold.

My dear Eleyna. She was always so good at remembering my lessons, and that hasn't changed. I enjoy the time we've spent together. It brings back a lot of memories.
