If you always assume that you are an example to at least one other person in this world, then you are always reminded to set a good example.

Foolishness has a cost. Every society, even small ones, pay a price for believing and repeating things that are false. Inevitably, all facts result in some action, so the falsehood, assumed to be fact, will lead to an action. That action, based in an untruth, will come with a price. Maybe the price will be small, but then again, maybe it will be high.

Leaders must always set the highest standard. When we of the nobility read the White Journal of an aggrieved commoner, or speak with one in the streets, and come away befuddled or dismissive of their reasons, it would behoove us to stop and reflect upon that. Some people may aspire to be like those men and women who have become known for their heaps of coin and their freedom from trouble and pain, but I think we should instead look to those who shun luxury and ease. Once entrusted with power of any kind, we should worker harder than ever, not less.

Relationship Note on Strozza

You are most welcome. However, it is I that should be thanking you.

Thank you, cousin, for bringing back the limoncello that I requested. While I rely on you for so much more, it is often the small favors we do one another that make up the bulk of our lives. And so, too, are small favors oft overlooked.

"Dear Second Most Powerful,

I guess you assistance would be great and all, but you are still only Second Most Powerful.

Here's to hoping things work out."

A practice in emotional writing. Letters are so easy to take out of context, after all. Without our ability to convey expression, tone, or posture, so much can be lost. It is better to make a habit of writing in such a way as to best show your honest intent so that your intended recipient is not left confused or uncertain. While a lack of communication is often the root of so many misunderstandings, so too is muddled communication.

Innovation and experimentation are not good in and of themselves. They are to be judged by their results, not by their newness or their originality. A triangular wheel would be an innovation, but it would not be an advance.

As the Seraph of Ostria once said, "Never be dismissive of a friend's accusation, even if it seems unreasonable. Instead, one should make every effort to restore the relationship to its original condition."

When reading journals from centuries ago, it can be helpful - indeed, beneficial - to stop and wonder what someone eight hundred years from now will think when reading one's own journals. What things beneath my nose will they see that I do not?

It is not necessary for leadership to be thoroughly despotic for people to live in oppressive conditions in which they are afraid to say some things, and, what's worse, feel required to say others.

There is no better way to destroy human personality than this.

One of the first steps to wisdom is confidently saying "I don't know," when you don’t know something. As I have matured - both as an individual, and as a leader - I say "I don't know," a lot more than in the past.

Chance plays an underappreciated role in human affairs. Whether it is the weather or human error, unexpected events often change the course of history.

Human nature is never in need of help when it comes lying to oneself or to others concerning the dark truth of one's behavior. For if there's one thing all men and women share, it's the tendency to delusion.

Try not to ask a question for a single day. Not in word, and not in writing. Try it for even an hour.

It is incredibly difficult.

Children, and whomever else reads this now and in future...

It is important that you scrutinize yourself, being honest about your motives and intentions. Then you will know what you are and, what is more, what you should become. You must, of course, hold yourself to the same exacting standard that you apply to others. If you practice this, then you will learn much from experience, which will forever be the greatest teacher.

Relationship Note on Hadrian

I have kept my promise to you.

I shan't deny that it would not have been possible without you, of course. How different our lives might have been had you remained the Duke of Southport; had I married another. What might the future have held for us, if only we had not tied our respective futures together? Such questions are amusing to ponder, but ultimately meaningless.

Because the promise has been made real. Though it took you, and many others, to achieve, you cannot deny that I have not done what I set out to do, that I stuck to my plan with a tenacity no one would have thought possible from the sickly little girl that I once was. I took you from your ducal seat in the city-state of Southport, and put you upon another. One that was not passed down to you by relations who had already made it strong, made it famous. It is easy to reign brightly on the success of others, after all.

I attacked your pride, your word - your very honor. It was not easy. Not for you, nor for me. I brought you into a House who had suffered under your kin and they were not thrilled to see you in it. The first few years of our marriage were not happy.

But what I did, what we did, was for more than that promise I made you. Though a promise is never a thing to be taken lightly, we both know that the future I dreamed of was one in which the people who owe me their fealty could live a life better than the one they had before. I wanted to take my inheritance and transform it...not because what was there was at all bad, but because that is the duty (as I see it) of a leader. I will forever strive to make Ostria better than when I found it, and I shall expect our children to do the same, when it is their time.

Yes, I have kept my promise to you. When your gaze next falls across the Walled City, I hope you will know the taste of a glory that you yourself worked to achieve.

One goal among many, finally achieved.

No time to rest on ones laurels, though.
