It feels rare that I have a chance to visit the Archive as of late, but after such a fun - yes, fun - evening in the company of lovely people, I felt this should be noted. It has been months since I have been able to host a feast at Eswyndol, too. And so it seemed appropriate to do so on the occasion of my birthday (or near enough). I had a wonderful time giving away prizes to those who participated in the lighthearted challenges I posed. If ever you get the chance, see if Dame Martinique Barlinnie will do her impression of my husband for you. Take the glass from her first, though, as she is likely drinking something and it may end up shattered against a wall.

I do have an idea for an event as a result. It involves harpoons.

Some time ago, I was branded a "Shav sympathizer" for daring to suggest that the Compact may need allies and that Prodigals should be treated better. This has not sat well with me, as the label suggests that I am, in some way, positioned against the safety and promise of the Compact. That is absurd.

My duty as a noble is to ensure that my people are well, to see the threats against them and ensure the tools are in place to stop those threats. Never have I permitted a threat from Shav'Arvani to flourish. When the Velniavis of Oksehode dared to steal sheep from Eswynd Rock? I was there with my people as we dismantled their three settlements. Their children have been taken in by Eswynders and our vassals, to be raised as followers of the Pantheon and protectors of Arvum. In the face of heretical adherents to a twisted version of the Sentinel's ideals, I also stood among the victorious in crushing the Shav clan Vodyanoy. My firsthand knowledge of their settlement from having been held captive by them proved invaluable in their destruction. I have faced Shavs that allied themselves with the apostate Ivan Helianthus and Skal'daja, and abandoners who had willingly left the Compact to create their own kingdom with loyalties to Alaric the Third.

I hold no sympathy for Shavs as a whole. But I do hold with the tenets of the Faith. Let it not be said that I have spurned the Sentinel or Gild or Lagoma, Gloria or Limerance, in my encounters. Though, I do wonder how many people have benefitted from trade with Cardia, Eurus, or Jadairal while yet imagining me to be some force of the Abyss for suggesting we might find support in our own regions.

What a spectacular tournament Ambassador Bahiya held! I missed the first round, much to my chagrin, but I was able to catch the second round and then the final round. I almost did not - it is quite the feat to navigate these snowy streets with a cane. However, I could not miss the chance to see my husband compete against Lord Ian Kennex. Isles men fight hard! Haakon came away with a bloody lip and placed second overall. Lord Ian earned that victory. Sir Corban Telmar and Blessed Porter Kennex came in third and fourth, respectively. Their match was close! I suppose it is to be expected when the First Captain of the King's Own and a former Knight of Solace turned Archlector of Gild face one another. Their talent and skill is admirable. The Compact is served well by all of these men.

The Golden Hart's arena is such a grand space for athletic endeavors. Valencia's work and attention to detail is always appreciated. The very first event I ever held in the city was in that arena! Sitting beside Countess Thea and teasing one another felt so much like those early days in the city. And Marquis Oskar has returned from Eswynd Rock, joining us to watch the tournament. It is good to have him in the city again.

This has been a much needed bit of levity after the events that unfolded at the Blackshore wedding. I am grateful for having had the opportunity. I hear the ambassador is planning another tournament for archery - that should be as enjoyable as this one was.

I wish to apologize in advance to anyone who honors me with an invitation to their wedding celebration in the future for the likelihood that I will send a gift in lieu of my presence. It is not a personal slight.

That aside? House Blackshore stands strong in the wake of treachery. And I would take a sword to the cheek again if it meant being able to help save the baron and baroness-consort. I was lucky to be surrounded by dear friends and allies who rushed to my defense, and I am grateful that the situation was not more disastrous - do not misinterpret that, it was a disaster. It could have been so much worse, however. I do not appear to be in danger of losing my leg, though I will walk with a limp for some time. And this cut on my face is liable to leave a lasting scar.

I survive, and so do the Blackshores. May no traitor prevail against us.

Mariska. We have named our new daughter Mariska, and she is a joy. The twins do not yet appear to have any feelings about her; Butterpup has, like a good shepherd, already recognized her as part of the 'flock.'

This little lady is going to grow up with a blessing: Princess Natasha and Prince Romulius Thrax have agreed to be her saltparents. I pray that she gains an understanding of justice, a sense of honor, and the importance of embracing duty from their influence in her life.

Relationship Note on Tanith

I am sure that I never thought Tanith would be my midwife all those years ago when I learned midwifery at her side. I am relieved to have had her there to welcome my third child. Life has been a strange and turbulent journey, and there is much strife in the world around us, but the familiar comfort of a trusted person in a time of need is a balm for the soul. Thank you, Tanith, for welcoming my baby girl.

Relationship Note on Haakon

I wish sometimes that there was a way for me to show others how dependable, generous, and humorous my husband can be. He is an acquired taste, to be sure, but any good vintner knows how to handle sour grapes.

The Autumnal Gala was a delight, and I think everyone was more interested in the kittens than anything else. Those kittens were such a surprise! Fluffy does not seem terribly concerned about the kittens finding new homes, now. It has been a few months, and they are all healthy, so it was time to see them off. I certainly cannot keep them all. Two found homes right away! Princess Keely Grayson found a companion in little Piscetta - she is a sweet but vocal girl. I think that kitten must take after the father with her chocolate brown coloring. And those cream colored mittens! Adorable. Messere Zakhar took Ariesse as I felt they would be well suited to one another. She was the firstborn of the litter and will not let anyone fail to understand her importance. Headstrong, brave, and nibbly. I know she will be well cared for with him, and she will never get bored. A few more kittens will be heading off to new homes soon - more time was needed to determine the best matches between person and pet. I think Virgil and Libris have found their people. That leaves Gemima and Taurence. I am sure they will find people, soon.

I will never grow tired of helping other mothers bring their little ones into the world. The most recent notable birth of Lady Adalyn and Lord Vitalis Clement's daughter was, like all others I have attended, nothing short of divine. It is a bit harder to perform all the necessary tasks, now. I may need to admit my limitations and perform only administrative tasks for the next month or so. A shame, that, but I am glad to have been able to ensure the health of the Clements before this point.

I cannot say enough good things about the other members of the Physicians Guild. Whenever there is need for us to come together, we do. I can always be certain that they will come when messengers are sent to them. After the horrible attack at the Blackram estate in the city, I saw again how reliable and dedicated they are. It is a relief that the injuries were not so grievous as they could have been. I was glad to hear that Lady Ivy was away and safe during it all. Her contributions to the guild are important - and it was strange not seeing her face among those rushing to help the injured.

It has been a much needed quiet few days recently. At least, quiet for me. There are many things which need my attention, but they seem to have waited just fine.

We are expecting another little lord or lady Eswynd in a few months. This may help to explain why I have been less engaged in the city's social calendar as of late. My attention has been upon my health and my family. I do not often allow myself to rest - there are many duties to attend to, but I feel much more clear of mind.

There will be a fishing event to honor Mangata during the Days of Libation, and while I cannot partake, plenty of drink for all who attend. There will be prizes for the most impressive fisherfolk, as well. And soon after, I will be settling into a new series of scheduled lessons for the Apothecary College and Physicians Guild. And the autumn gala is not too far off, either. Plenty to prepare for!

What a strange few weeks it has been. I had not expected to find myself reminding people that becoming offended at the implied weakness of pirates located in the Lyceum's waters is ridiculous - especially when their offense comes at the slight to Lycenes? Pirates, that likely came from places outside of the Lyceum and actively disrupt the trade and safety of Lycene houses, should not be considered citizens of the Lyceum that deserve a defense when their ease of being crushed is stated publicly. Their weakness is a boon to smaller houses reliant on their small fleets. That, and the offense was targeted at someone who married a Lycene, has helped to improve the naval capabilities of at least one Lycene house, and is risking his life to protect the Lyceum's trade interests. A truly baffling situation. It makes me question where loyalties actually are for some. But I was told it was not a good look for me to try to clear up this matter on my husband's behalf. I will keep this in mind should I ever hear someone sympathize with the Skal'dajans; it is clearly wrong to speak out against enemies of the Compact.

Yes, Scholar, that last was sarcasm.

I have made calls for unity in my journals and in public forums that have been shouted down in the past. Yet, the Compact is an example of the hope and strength unity provides. I have had people tell me that my calls are misguided, that what I advocate for is against the ideal of choice and freedom. It is horrible to have people I respect tell me that I am imploring my peers to accept slavery when what I am doing is imploring my peers to remember why the Compact was formed.

We make trade deals, marriage alliances, oaths to support the union of six great houses under the Crown. Unity does not ask for blind obedience. It does not strip away your name, your customs, your individuality. It is a state of being in which one accepts another as an ally regardless of their differences. Our united efforts won us the battle at Pieros. Similarly, we have come together to see to the care and keeping of Bastion's refugees. Many voiced the sentiment that an attack on Bastion was an attack on all of us.

That is unity. It must be a blessed thing because Gild compels us to give succor to those who need it and Limerance holds us to our oaths of fealty and marriage. I know that I have made my share of divisive comments, but at every step I seek the survival - no, the flourishing - of the Compact.

I will preface this by saying I am not privy to anymore information on this matter than anyone else. However, I am deeply concerned by the actions being taken by Archduchess-Regent Jaenelle Velenosa. She has made it clear what an impressive effort she has made in this role. No one denies that she has been an effective, even superb, leader in her time as regent. Her foresight has ensured that the Lyceum is stronger and safer. I am as grateful for the support she has shown to her vassals and theirs as one could be! She has performed her duty admirably.

Her duty as regent. The appointment of a regent is to lead in the stead of the named heir and guide that heir until they reach majority. That the archduchess-regent has been an exemplar is not in dispute, her demand to drop the "regent" from her title is. The Compact is built on the promises we make to one another, it is a promise, and it is weakened when we do not honor it. Being appointed regent shows a great amount of trust in the individual to care for the child heir and the lands and people they will inherit the rule of. And trust to release the hold on their power when the time comes. The role of a regent is meant to be temporary.

I say this knowing it is unlikely to win me any friends. In fact, I fully expect for this publicly available opinion to cause difficulty for me in the coming days. My hope is that any who wish to show their disagreement with me do so directly.

Relationship Note on Cufre

I am ecstatic to hear that Harlequin Cufre Harrow's new shop in the Ward of the Compact has opened! My dear protege is an amazing artist with a gift for making metals and baubles that delight and inspire. She is not one for large gatherings, and I have politely squashed my own wishes to host an extravagant grand opening for her. However, she did not say I could not gush about her in my journals. So, should any who read this find they have need for a jeweler? I encourage you to seek her out at Heart of Stone. It will be well worth your while, I assure you.

I had the pleasure of meeting a lovely couple, Wilhelm and Ana Tiffin, at the refugee relief gala. They were sweet, and delighted to see how people from all across Arvum were coming together to help them and their neighbors. Being able to give some of the survivors of the tragic and horrific losses faced in Bastion a chance to relax for the evening was an honor.

And I can say that the fundraiser was a success! The donations that came in were plentiful and generous. While everyone who helped should be acknowledged, I think it would be a disservice not to name names on behalf of two individuals in particular: Duke Hadrian Mazetti and Sir Corban Telmar are truly wonderful examples of the best of the Compact. It was a privilege to see their kindness in action.

Another trip down to Saikland was just what I needed. The wine festival was well attended, and I was delighted to see how many friends and acquaintances from the city made the trip. I hope they all had an amazing visit and enjoyed all of the hospitality the Saiklanders had to offer. So much food, and music, and learning. It was wonderful to get a chance to share my love of winemaking with so many, show off what the vintners have been doing, and host the vineyard games with Baroness Lucita and Softest Whisper Cesare.

The games were quite a success, as well! Prince Baldessare Velenosa, Lady Ivy Blackram, and Cesare each secured 5000 silver for themselves and a 10000 silver donation to the Physicians Guild, the Lodge of Petrichor, and the Disciples of Jayus. Lady Kiera Wyrmguard was a standout talent in the games, however! She claimed a prize of 10000 silver for herself, 10000 silver each for the Mercies of Lagoma and Physicians Guild, and the right to have a custom wine made to her specifications by the Saikland vintners as the crowd's favorite.

I have been named Voice of the Apothecary College in the wake of Guildmistress Auda's appointment to that most illustrious position. While the circumstances are not ideal - and I do hope Messere Orick recovers soon, it is an honor to serve the college in this way. I will, of course, still offer classes and share my knowledge as best as I can. I look forward to working with the guildmistress, my fellow professors, our students and community in this new role.
