The oaths between liege and vassal are sacred. This is the fidelity between Limerance and Gloria. A lord guarantees protection and justice.
This is the first Law of Limerance, upon which the whole of the Compact is built.
Do the lords of this land understand this? As news of death spreads, as news of a new enemy spreads, I wonder how many meditate upon these words. When a commoner dies, does it mean a failure, not just to that person, but to Gloria and Limerance both? I'll start crying if I think on such a burden too long.
I do not have vassals. I do not have anyone to protect. My lord is my beloved King. I am infinitely grateful that when frustration and fear and concern for my own life and my family overtakes me that King Alaric takes a moment from his too busy schedule to write me back.
To all those Crownsworn that wonder if their King listens, he does. If anyone needs a more direct route to his ear, I am here to listen and to take concerns to him. That is my job, as Commoners' Councillor.
To all those that are sworn to other lords and other houses, I'll not dare speak on your lords behalf. I will, however, offer my services in speaking to your lord on your behalf.

NEWS:
*A shipment of goods bound for Arx was almost intercepted by bandits. A company of brave men and women fought off the attackers and tracked the bandits back to a hideout on the coast, which apparently had been used for smuggling. The rescued goods will continue on to Arx, to be distributed amongst the needy.
*With the arrival of an heir, the High Lord of Thrax and his beautiful wife have donated lots of silver to the Shrine of Mangata, the Shrine of Death, and to the orphanage. Gods bless Princess Astrid!
*House Keaton has started a trade embargo against House Leary. Why? Probably has something to do with Duchess Nicia Laurent challenging Marquis Fairen Leary. That or it’s about dogs.
*Princess Marian of Redrain lives! The princess was seriously wounded by one of the deranged cultists that attacked Arx. Gods bless the doctors and the healers and the Mercies. Gods bless Princess Marian.
*Lieutenant Calaudrin Estrades of the Iron Guard is fixing to marry Dame Esoka Greenblood of House Riven. Because it’s not only the nobles that get married!
*An abandoned longship with gray sails was towed into port by House Kennex. The ship had been used by the cultists that attacked Arx, though there were no cultists still board. The original crew of the Grayson merchant vessel was found aboard, dead. The bodies were all taken off and given proper rites at the Shrine of the Queen of Endings.
*The Mercies of Lagoma have organized the Harrowed Heart initiative, designed to help those that suffering from stress and trauma from all sorts of sources. If your heart hurts, seek out the Mercies of Lagoma. They can heal more than just cuts and burns.
*Under the leadership of the Palace’s own Seraph, worship of the Pantheon has been spreading more and more across the Mourning Isles. For those that don’t know, those in Thrax Fealty are not exactly well known for their strong faith. So this is good news!
*After an expedition out to Blackshore, a land that was destroyed by some awful fires about a year back, Lady Aislin Ashford was reported missing. I ask that each and every one of us pray that Lady Aislin makes it back to Arx quickly and safely. Of course, if anyone has any information as to where she might be, there will be big, big rewards, I am certain.
*A crack-down began on Prodigals (and Abandoned) inside of Arx, particularly any of those hailing from the Mourning Isles. While there was a lot of anger over this, I will again ask you all to stay calm and be patient. As uncomfortable as this might all be, the Inquisition has released word that they caught a group of the cultists serving the Pirate King. It is still possible there may be more cultists inside of Arx, so please keep eyes and ears open, and report anything you find to Master of Questions Laric or Lord Commander Silas.
PROCLAMATIONS:
*The Marquis and Marquessa of Stormward - Ford and Vanora Kennex - have announced the birth of their son and heir Darion.
*Marquis Fairen Leary accepted the challenged issued to him by Duchess Nicia Laurent. No details yet as to when and where (or, even, what this is about!).
*Lord Samael Bisland, Voice of his House, knighted Lady Joslyn of House Stonewood.
*Duchess Clover Farshaw challenged Marquessa Vanora Kennex, claiming rudeness and unacceptable social behavior. Marquessa Vanora issued an apology for her behavior, and Duchess Clover accepted. The matter is settled.
*Princess Alis Valardin and Lady Monique Greenmarch dueled. The former was championed by Prince Beaumont Valardin, the latter by Agnarr the Massive. Agnarr bested Prince Valardin, and Princess Alis apologized to Lady Monique for overreacting, and for possibly not seeing the flaws of her brother, Prince Edain, who she loves very much.

NEWS:
*In the last bulletin, I wrote about some nobles running down some prodigals at the docks. I have since been informed that these were shavs, serving the pirate king. They were confronted by nobles serving the Iron Guard, and attacked the Guard when questioned. For additional information, please consult the Emergency Bulletin released a few days back ( +bbread state/6 ).
*Attacks by the shav'arani pirate king and the cult that serves him have continued. Many brave men and women gave their lives defending Arx and the Compact, including Dame Zhayla of Old Oak and Lord Killian Ashford. Many more were injured in these attacks. See the Emergency Bulletin for more information.
*House Grayson's archers, known as the Silver Wings, have been drilling endlessly. Some say they might soon be the best archers in all of Arvum!
*Darkness has continued to spread through the waters around Arx, and rumors come of large fish swimming around the bay and up the river. Not that it needs to be said this late in the season, but please don't go swimming.
*Templars have been going around Arx donating their time (and their coin) to help people in need. Fixing a leaky roof is not what I imagine when I think Templar, but I'm happy to hear it's happening!
*Lady Monique formally accepted the challenge from Princess Alis. Master Agnarr will be squaring off against Prince Beaumont, both of the Champions guild. The duel will be happening next week.
*Mirrormasks have been going out across the city spreading the message of the Thirteenth. I much prefer sermons (during day time) and free meals over the strange stuff a few weeks back.

*Lady Eirlys has been named Voice of House Greenmarch. Lady Monique has stepped down as Voice of House Greenmarch.

*Sir Matthew Stoatingly has chosen his squire from the Thistlefur family, who couldn't be prouder. This is about stoats and stoat things. Not people. A stoat is a sort of cat-snake.
*Baron Silas Whitehawk has married Lady Farrah Amadeo in a private ceremony. I didn't even know they were courting!
*House Deepwood mourns the loss of its Sword, Dame Zhayla, who died fighting deranged cultists sent to wreak havoc in Arx.
*Duchess Nicia Laurent challenged Marquis Fairen Leary, for bad behavior and bullying. Marquis Fairen has yet to respond to the challenge. (OOC note: Fairen's initial response was an OOC misunderstanding. The post has been retracted, and he'll be responding in the next few days.)

EMERGENCY BULLETIN - 10/26/1007 AR (12/22/2017)
To the people of the Compact:
In the past few days, we have gotten news of many deaths. Loyal members of the Compact have fallen including a noble Dame Zhayla of Old Oak, Sword of Deepwood, and Lord Killian Ashford, Paladin of Ideals. We all mourn the loss of these men and women that have died protecting our lives and our land.
It has become apparent that these deaths are different. They happened in and near Arx. We've lost some of the Compact's finest fighters. I wish I could write to you that we need not be afraid, but I cannot. I do not want to unduly scare anyone, but these are scary times. There will be more deaths.
The people that have attacked us belong to a deranged cult, bent on bringing harm to the Compact. They are allied with the Shav'arani pirates that terrorize the Mourning Isles. They worship the Abyss and believe by sacrificing young women they will be able to defeat us. The Inquisition, the Iron Guard, the Crown, and all the Fealties are working to combat these maniacs. Their forces in Arx were slain, but it would be unwise to think they are gone for good.
All citizens of the Compact should be on the lookout for anyone - citizen, prodigal, shav, or otherwise - that is seeking out particular young women. If anyone sees or hears such things, they should contact Lord Commander Silas or Master of Questions Laric ASAP. I held two women as they wept. As they felt true sorrow over the death of a friend, a family member, a faithful protector of the Compact.
I had to leave those two behind, in their despair, to go deliver a child into this world.
That baby sure could cry. Funny how crying works like that.
We are all spun from Death's own self and put into this world. We all return to her when we leave it. And whether your soul is spun again and sent back for another turn, or whether it moves on to Elysia, we all can be confident that we will continue on. In this world, or in paradise.

I wrote a history of Arx. I don't think it's very good, and it misses more things than it doesn't. But maybe someone can read it and get some perspective. Maybe it will help us not forget.

NEWS:
*Some Prodigals arrived from the Saffron Chain looking for their "sister". Fear not, as a posse of nobles killed the prodigals! Arx belongs to Arxians!
*Princess Alarissa put out a call requesting for all men and women of the Compact to register ownership of "Cobalt weapons". Is that some new kind of weapon? Something special, like that fancy ship that sailed into port, bound for Prince Laric? Carrying that strange weapon aboard it? That was carted out without a word, and never returned (though a lot of injured Inquisitors did return)?
*Lady Tessa Moore put out a request for people who have met a unicorn. Maybe Lady Tessa should talk to Princess Alarissas? Unicorns probably have magic weapons.
*Princess Caelis is with child! That means Prince Edain, High Lord of Valardin, has an heir on the way! To celebrate, the noble pair donated silver to poor children, and the charities and groups that support poor children. Also, they funded Arx's drinking for a night.
*After a mess of new recruits in the Iron Guard proved themselves less than honorable - extorting people, taking bribes, starting protection rackets - the leaders of the Guard cracked down. These new (mostly freed Thrall) have been dismissed from the guard. I wonder where they'll find work now.
*The Inquisition has began to pay out silver to those most hurt by the fire in Merchant West.
*Prince Venteri of the Marin'alfar has left Arx! By way of… the ocean? Is that the name of his boat?
*Princess Alarissa gave birth of High Lord Victus' daughter. Word is two very skilled (and beautiful) Disciples of Death were on hand to deliver the babe, and bless her into this world.
*Princess Reese Grayson, commander of the Grayson forces, held an award ceremony for those that fought in the recent campaign in the Gray Forest. While I am quite unclear what we were fighting, it's safe to assume there's plenty in the dark woods that mean us ill.
PROCLAMATIONS:
*Princess Sasha Valardin and Marquis Cirroch Sanna have begun courting. Is that maybe why Cirroch had those new fancy gardens built? Or were the gardens because three (3!) Sanna noblewomen arrived? I guess one of them is actually a Redrain? Not going to try to figure that one out.
*Prince Edain has announced that his wife, Princess Caelis, is with child. I believe they've already settled on "Mae" if it's a girl.
*Master of Questions Laric has announced the fire in Merchant West was started by accident, and not on purpose, and not by a person. It would seem they can stop their search for a perpetrator! We can all stop worrying.
*Lord (?) Sivard Grimhall confessed to murder and was promptly executed by the Inquisition (which the Crown Court supported).
*High Lord Victus Thrax announced the birth of his and Princess Alarissa's daugther, Astrid Thrax, and have proclaimed her heir of Maelstrom. Gods bless Astrid Thrax.
*The lord formerly called Logan Halfshav was stripped of title and removed from his family. Looks like Duke Vercyn has forbade his family and vassals from offering the man any aid. Looks like someone messed up more than a little.

NEWS:
*Some Prodigals arrived from the Saffron Chain looking for their "sister". Fear not, as a posse of nobles killed the prodigals! Arx belongs to Arxians!
*Princess Alarissa put out a call requesting for all men and women of the Compact to register ownership of "Cobalt weapons". Is that some new kind of weapon? Something special, like that fancy ship that sailed into port, bound for Prince Laric? Carrying that strange weapon aboard it? That was carted out without a word, and never returned (though a lot of injured Inquisitors did return)?
*Lady Tessa Moore put out a request for people who have met a unicorn. Maybe Lady Tessa should talk to Princess Alarissas? Unicorns probably have magic weapons.
*Princess Caelis is with child! That means Prince Edain, High Lord of Valardin, has an heir on the way! To celebrate, the noble pair donated silver to poor children, and the charities and groups that support poor children. Also, they funded Arx's drinking for a night.
*After a mess of new recruits in the Iron Guard proved themselves less than honorable - extorting people, taking bribes, starting protection rackets - the leaders of the Guard cracked down. These new (mostly freed Thrall) have been dismissed from the guard. I wonder where they'll find work now.
*The Inquisition has began to pay out silver to those most hurt by the fire in Merchant West.
*Prince Venteri of the Marin'alfar has left Arx! By way of… the ocean? Is that the name of his boat?
*Princess Alarissa gave birth of High Lord Victus' daughter. Word is two very skilled (and beautiful) Disciples of Death were on hand to deliver the babe, and bless her into this world.
*Princess Reese Grayson, commander of the Grayson forces, held an award ceremony for those that fought in the recent campaign in the Gray Forest. While I am quite unclear what we were fighting, it's safe to assume there's plenty in the dark woods that mean us ill.
PROCLAMATIONS:
*Princess Sasha Valardin and Marquis Cirroch Sanna have begun courting. Is that maybe why Cirroch had those new fancy gardens built? Or were the gardens because three (3!) Sanna noblewomen arrived? I guess one of them is actually a Redrain? Not going to try to figure that one out.
*Prince Edain has announced that his wife, Princess Caelis, is with child. I believe they've already settled on "Mae" if it's a girl.
*Master of Questions Laric has announced the fire in Merchant West was started by accident, and not on purpose, and not by a person. It would seem they can stop their search for a perpetrator! We can all stop worrying.
*Lord (?) Sivard Grimhall confessed to murder and was promptly executed by the Inquisition (which the Crown Court supported).
*High Lord Victus Thrax announced the birth of his and Princess Alarissa's daugther, Astrid Thrax, and have proclaimed her heir of Maelstrom. Gods bless Astrid Thrax.
*The lord formerly called Logan Halfshav was stripped of title and removed from his family. Looks like Duke Vercyn has forbade his family and vassals from offering the man any aid. Looks like someone messed up more than a little.

I return to Arx to find that Astrid is not the only noble baby being born. What a happy time!
Me and Lady Lethe delivered Astrid and blessed her in the name of Death, that she'll grow up knowing the wonderful things she's been given, and knowing that her life is hers to make.
I've wrote to Countess Melinda and Count Artorius, to see if they might allow a blessing in the name of the Mother of Beginnings. I've also wrote Prince Edain and Princess Caelis about the same.
I also want to remind anyone reading this that the Harlequins are here to help! Most of us are trained as midwives, and we know blessings to speak at birth. And if you're in Arx, the Archlector himself would surely enjoy coming to bless a newborn.

The Commoners Bulletin is a condensed version of the news, happenings, and proclamations given out in the past week! This is a new feature being done by Mae Grayhope and the Commoners Council. NEWS:
*It would appear our beloved statue of Mangata, located on the beach outside of Arx, has some odd slime and rust developing on it. I've spoken to Archlector Madeleine of Mangata and she's requested prayer and support from the people of Arx. The Goddess stands beside us, as we battle those pirates and shavs in the Darkwater. So, too, should we stand beside her.
*There's talk of a Mirrormask running around, giving out tasks, and holding sermons in the middle of the night. Did we need another reminder that Mirrormasks are strange?
*It was publicly announced at the dedication of the Carlotta, the Lenosian-class caravel, aka 'that fancy new ship', that House Velenosa is gifting the blueprints to the Compact. They were handed personally to King Alaric and encouraged to be placed under the protection of the Crown. Rumours have it that there was no deal struck in terms of sale, simply gifted and any costs incurred from the research and construction were swallowed by House Velenosa and its allies. Weird. What does this mean? Ships that can sail beyond the Mourning Sea without sinking, most likely.
*A fire spread across Merchant West, in the Crown Ward. The fires were started by a devious man that the Inquisition has taken into custody, says High Inquisitor Alistair. It doesn't seem like we know why the man started these fires, but I'll guess he was an enemy of the Compact. Rumor is a few brave nobles climbed into a burning building to save some poor kids!
*What's happening in Stormward? Well, it seems after descending in a few weeks of craziness, things have stabilized. Probably because millions of silver were sent over to support House Kennex and to help the freed thralls.
*And speaking of money staying here, to help Arx, it seems Lady Monique has made a big donation to the Shrine of Gild! I look forward to what goodly project that silver will go to.
*More money was spent to build the Nox'alfar Embassy. Princess Jaenelle is working on that! Let's hope it's nice enough that the Nox aren't entirely insulted, but not so nice they aren't a little insulted.
PROCLAMATIONS:
*After word got out that House Malvici ran upon some financial troubles, many, many houses professed their support for Duchess General Calypso and House Malvici.
*Lady Carita Darkwater and Baron Edward Stormbreak ended their courtship.
*Lady Arianna Stonewood was named temporary(?) Sword of Cedarvale, which belongs to House Fireviper, which is Count Gailin's house.
*Marquis Ford Kennex thanked the Compact for supporting Darkwater, and said he is in debt to us.
*Master of Questions Laric Grayson stated the Inquisition was searching perpetrators of the nasty fire in Merchant West.
*Mercy Cybele has been named Voice of the Mercies of Lagoma in Arx
*Lady Titania Kennex was removed as Voice of House Kennex by Marquis Ford Kennex (and the peerage did not seem to like that!).
*Count Gailin Fireviper began courting Lady Titania Kennex (who is not Voice of House Kennex).
*Father Orazio announced the winner of the Faith's Bookbinding Contest. Calaudrin Estrades is the winner! His book is on display at the Vellichorian Archives. His wife must be proud.

Commoners' Council Primer: The MARIN'ALFAR
As many of my fellow Arxians have heard, a delegation of the "Marin'alfar" have arrived here in our beautiful city. These people, who live east of Arvum, in the ocean, are old allies of ours that we lost contact with long ago. They are presently doing battle with the same forces that we're doing battle with, so we are very gracious to have friends! Here's some information about the Marin'alfar.
Who are they?
The Marin'alfar are old allies of the Compact that live to the east. Like the Nox'alfar, they are what some people call "elves". Unlike some masks and drawings that have been floating around, the Marin'alfar are tall and beautiful, with fair skin, pointed ears, and the one I met had blue hair. Prince Venteri is the Marin'alfar delegate that has come to Arx to meet with His Majesty and discuss matters.
What are they doing here?
They are friends of the Compact, and we used to have a formal alliance with them. We are both presently fighting the Kraken's Kin and that ilk, the pirates and shavs that come from islands deep in the Darkwater. The Marin'alfar and Thrax have built an embassy out in Maelstrom, where they will have a semi-regular presence. I'm told Prince Venteri's stay here in Arx is temporary.
Where do they come from?
The Marin'alfar live in the seas to the east of Arvum. I've heard rumors that they live under the ocean waves, but I've also heard rumors that they look like goldfish. I can confirm they do not look like goldfish!
When will we know more about this?
I'm not sure right now, but I've been assured the Observers and the Crown are communicating with the Marin'alfar, and your Councilors will let you know as soon as we know more.
Why are we getting more information about them?
The Marin'alfar are friends and allies of the Compact, and we are to make a formal treaty with them, just as we have with the Nox'alfar. We (your councilors, your Crown, and everyone who doesn't like getting attacked by pirates) would very much like to see things go well with our rediscovered friends.
A (very) brief guide to dealing with the Marin'alfar:
Be nice. Be considerate. Be kind. Prince Venteri is here to help. Prince Venteri is also very nice, and seems to have a good sense of humor. The Marin'alfar like coffee! I've got a feeling they also would like any other treat the Compact has to offer, and if you want to send something, you certainly can.
Most importantly, the Marin'alfar and Prince Venteri are here as guests. No one is their keeper. But I will be very cross if Guest Right is not respected! If anyone needs a lesson in Guest Right, contact a Godsworn or a Knight of Solace.
If anyone has questions, please feel free to contact me or any of your Councilors. We may not have answers, but we'll be able to help you find answers.

Dear Arx,
My dog is name Scourge, Fang of the Marsh. He shall become the most ferocious ratter in all the Lowers. Anyone know where I can get some mice for him to practice crunching up their bitty heads?
Also, my child will not be named Torian, nor will he or she be named by a contest!

Let it be known that Scourge (the rat-dog formally known as Bear) is MY DOG.
Not Magpie's dog! Lord Valerio ceded his first place victory to ME and I took Scourge. Also I was really good at putting the thing through the holes.
