Relationship Note on Laric

Dame Morrighan's book is rather straightforward, and covers the basics.

Her next edition will hopefully go into further details about more advanced topics. Such as, how it may not be the best of ideas to advertise to the Master of Questions your expertise in starting fires.

Morrighan, I sincerely hope you're reading this.

I cannot praise highly enough the tailoring skills of Dame Morrighan. She surpassed even Lycene masters with their own fabrics, and has done phenomenal work, as always. She is a testament to Northern craft, and one I shall not tire to compliment.

Much to her continued embarrassment.

Supplies have been prepared, orders given. We will return hopefully successful. And alive. I doubt my betrothed would wish to wear a mourning dress, though she does look good in black.

The time has come to return to Arx. Things have progressed well in Aviaron, though I intend to return periodically to ensure the continued prosperity of the March. Nonetheless, duty calls in Arx.

Aviaron's mines are more numerous than ever, thanks to the support of faithful allies. Silver, gold, copper and iron flow like rivers from the depths, and the finest steel is forged from the furnaces. When I return to Arx, it will be with mind content of the progress made within my homeland.

I could not attend the wedding, though I was given to understand the event was attended by a suitable number. Apparently I'll have to reassure the servants that yes, they may indeed kill the spiders they encounter within the walls.

Unless they break into a song and tap dance their way out of the grounds, I suppose.

It is time I leave Arx for some time and return to Aviaron. Messengers will still be able to find me, fear not. But a Marquis should never be too long absent from their March, lest the land suffer from inattention.

One can't help but wonder what has made the recent White Journal entries so cryptic and mysterious.

To give the Abandonned the choice of kneeling before the Compact or to die is no true choice, and only serves to create resentment and disloyalty when another, softer method would have created far greater successes. As such, it is true that we could all benefit from demonstrating openness, to deal with those Abandonned as respected individuals and groups. To offer benefits to joining the Compact, rather than using the specter of death to get them to kneel.

Yet once oaths are made, once fealty is established, these very same Abandonned turned Prodigals are expected to follow the same laws as every citizen of the Compact. Our offer is for them to join the Compact as one of us, and every single one of us obeys the laws of the Compact. There are no privileges given that would take one individual higher than those laws, no matter where their origin, be they established nobility or new arrivals to the Compact.

If one makes light of the oaths that bound him or her to liege and crown, then they will be punished, again no matter their origin. We don't need to look very far in history to find exemples of such punishments applied to established citizens of the Compact. Such oaths, in accordance to the laws of Limerance, are sacred. They are not to be made, or broken, lightly.

Something else for all of us to consider, as we move to heal the damage done by Brand and his cohorts. Let the Compact be made stronger through unity, and through the sacred bounds that have unified lord and vassal for generations.

Relationship Note on Freja

I found her weakness. It wasn't merely alcohol.

It was excessive, man-killing, amounts of alcohol.

That she was able to take more than one drink of that vodka is a testament of her stubbornness. Or her liver. Probably both.

One way or another, it ends soon. This is an enemy that cannot be outrun, and thus I have not left the city. I will stay, and watch as we triumph over this foe, or are brought down into Oblivion.

The stakes could not be higher, our situation more dire. Triumph, or we lose, now and forever, past, future and present devoured into nothingness.

But we shall not despair, for from the depths come courage. We are not sheep meekly accepting our fate. We are cornered animals defending our home, a home that goes beyond merely Arx. We have been backed to a wall, and cannot, will not, take one more step back.

Brand has offered us a choice. Oblivion, now or later. The Compact will not be so generous. We offer him and his ilk the Abyss, now and forever.

How to approach the topic of Tehom with Northerners:

1. Promise whiskey if they listen.
2. Talk of Tehom while they drink.
3. Offer a whiskey bottle to go.

You would think by now Southerners would have realized any kind of worthwhile conversation is always had with whiskey in hand.

Of course Brand has a plan. But one does not offer an ultimatum out of the kindness of one's heart. If he gives an ultimatum now, it's because he considers that plan of his risky, that he would rather win this without having to risk so much of his forces. He's not counting on us accepting of course. He only wants to divide to better conquer, weaken his enemy before the finishing blow.

So let's not give the bastard what he wants.

I have, for some time, been a recluse. Though paperwork is endless, and numbers ever await to be calculated and juggled, I know, should know, that they can wait. Yes, duty. But what does duty mean, as a concept, if one fails to spend time with the people they love, in the city they work to save? What then is the value of duty, what then does it represent to oneself? It becomes weaker, fragile, more easily scorned and broken the more one isolates from those things that remind him of why.

Ice looks strong until you see the cracks.

Through the Dark Reflection, we peer into our secret flaws, our deepest thoughts that lie unacknowledged, our inner, unwanted truth. It is a dark mirror of ourselves, one unblemished by the delusions we reinforce each day to others, and ourselves. It can break an individual, or it can help them rise, grow strong as they accept what is undeniably them, accept and begin the work to perfect oneself. For it is not enough to simply embrace one's failings, one must go beyond, from weakness to strength.

It is not a simple matter, and the progress is slow, for all individuals do not have the same flaws, and the same tools to correct them. Only the Gods may know, and they choose not to meddle. Who are we mortal men and women, then, to break this singularly individualistic experience? Who are we to possibly destroy one's only chance to improvement? We condemn them to this flawed state, every time this trust is broken, every time the secrets of the Black Journals are revealed.

Mortal men and women do not hold the claim to be the masters of a soul's purification. To act in such a direction must, and does, ensure the most grievous of punishments. Thus I have learned during my stay within the Shrine of the Thirteenth.

As war draws near, many would focus their every effort in military feats of arms, in focus of strategies and tactics of the battlefield, and dismiss other preoccupations such as trade and economy. To do so is a grave mistake. I do not put such efforts in keeping trade flowing strong because I do not care of the war's outcome. That would simply be foolish. I, like many like-minded individuals, see that if we are to win this war, our economy must not falter. For how else are we to arm our soldiers? How else can we equip them with strong armour? How else can we give them healthy horses? How else can we feed, clothe and keep them healthy? All these things have costs, often great. A nation who lets its economy fall on the wayside would be able to afford none of these things, and would therefore be annihilated.

This is why we must still talk of trade. This is why we must still innovate and invest. For without the wealth we now pour in ensuring our survival, we would be facing our enemies armed with sticks and stones. Let us not forget that merchants, diplomats, thinkers and scholars, are just as important in protecting us from the coming threat, as the brave soldiers who'll be holding the line. For indeed, if we do our job properly, there'll be a lot less soldiers dying needlessly.

Aurum is taking his entrance within society relatively well, for a direwolf who has been used to the northern mountains for most of his life. He still growls and glares more than the norm, but I assume that once he's used to Arx, he'll be back to dismissing everything and everyone with a snort. No one tried to pet him so far, which is definitely a plus.
