It has been a truly exhausting few days. Can I just sleep today? Or maybe this week?

No, of course not. But wouldn't it be nice...

Commoners Bulletin V2N2 - 01/18/1008 AR (01/27/2017)

The Commoners Bulletin is a condensed version of the news, happenings, and proclamations given out in the past fortnight! If you have news to include in the bulletin, or you believe I've missed something, please send word! (OOC: Using mail is good!)
-Mae Grayhope, Commoners Council

NEWS:
*With the birth of an heir to the duchy, House Farshaw bought a round of drinks for all of Arx and all of Westrock Reach, and they’ve also made a large donation to the orphanages here in Arx.

*At the Training Center, Champion Caspian Wild hosted a free-for-all fight, to honor Gloria, to test the warriors of the Compact, and to have some fun. Princess Reese Grayson won, because she’s incredible. In the aftermath, Prince Ainsley Grayson had some choice words about the winner. See further down for more information.

*Grumpy turtle beat Peppy turtle in Turtle Fight 1. Both turtles were NOT put in a soup because some silly woman insisted on buying them.

*One Redrain princess was seen in the Lowers and elsewhere in Arx doing more than a little hard work in the name of charity. Considering how Redrain has traditionally ignored the Lowers, this was certainly good news! Keep it up, Princess.

*The white journals exploded, in wake of Prince Ainsley’s public spat with Princess Reese. Topics ranged from how the nobility ought to hide their squabbles from commoners to how they ought not squabble at all. Much was said about what made a princess “spoiled”, and there were no shortage of nobles who stood up to proudly declare how being born with piles of silver and having every opportunity available to them and being able to buy whatever they liked did not make them spoiled. That was followed by reminders of how difficult the burden of nobility was. This is, of course, absurd. If any noble wants to discuss how to properly use the white journals, and how to properly celebrate the gift of their own birth, I can recommend several sources.

*Another furor broke out in the whites after a certain duke proclaimed he was happy to see so many unwed women in this city. He viewed them like flowers, beautiful and alluring, but not necessarily useful. He needed to claim a flower that was also useful, not just beautiful. After several retorts, the populace decided to make a game out of it, and chose what flowers they would best represent. I think most of us are ground-ivy.

* Baron Estaban Saik married Lady Lucita Igniseri. Let us all pray for many beautiful babies!

PROCLAMATIONS:

*Duchess Calypso announced Lady Enyo Malvici is to marry Baron Stefano Gilden. She is wild and passionate. He is gorgeous and honorable. Together, I might wager they’ll be unstoppable.
*Archscholar Bianca appointed Brother Driskell as Prelate of the Scholars. Brother Driskell will speak with the Archscholar’s voice in matters of the Disciples of Vellichor.
*Duchess Clover Farshaw and Duke Ryhalt were ever so happy to welcome Lady Ivy Mae Farshaw into this world. The heir to Farshaw came early, but is in good health, and will surely prove to be exceptional in every single way. Goddess bless this beautiful babe.
*High Lord Darren Redrain confirmed the death of his cousin, Prince Fergus Redrain.
*Prince Darren also announced that Princess Marian would take over as War Chief. He also named Princess Donella and Princess Gwenna as his voices. Princess Donella has proven herself more than capable, handling more than a few matters within Thrax before marrying Prince Darren. Princess Gwenna will surely have the support she needs to do her job well.
*House Fidante has announced the birth of Lord Leandro Fidante, heir to Tor. Congratulations to Duchess Calista and Duke Inigo!
*Prince Ainsley Grayson apologized for, like, everything. The Prince had a bit of a tantrum and called his cousin, Princess Reese Grayson, a spoiled brat. Prince Ainsley apologized, then assured the Compact he’d continue to suffer as Voice of House Grayson.
*Princess Reese accepted Prince Ainsley’s apology. This caused a whole lot of back and forth fighting in the white journals. Should Ainsley have actually stepped down? Should Princess Reese be named a Voice? Is being called a Voice a punishment? Should Lady Arianna Stonewood never, ever, ever, ever, ever write a white journal again? These are the questions to be answered. (Please, House Stonewood, take away her pen.)
*In our House Greenmarch section: Prince Fiarcha has stepped down as Voice. If Greenmarch is looking for a new Voice, I happen to know Lady Arianna has too much free time on her hands.

To refer to women as flowers for you to pick is very strange, but poetic language sometimes is. To remind yourself that you should only pick flowers that fit your needs is stranger still. Surely, I thought, you're just awful at poetry.

But then you doubled down. Women are pretty, and beautiful, but also useful objects for men to take as they need. I think what Marquis Mydas was suggesting was that you should refer to women as people, not objects.

This is disgusting, my lord. I'm hoping that wherever Aislin is, she doesn't get sent a copy of this journal. I also hope that should you find any "flowers" to be "plucked" for their "usefulness", someone shows them these postings before they agree to marrying you.

Starting some time ago, I've been singing a lullaby to each new baby that is born, and sharing it with the mother and whoever else might wish to sing (and sharing it in a previous white journal). The song is sweet and beautiful and captures, so totally, exactly what I want to say. Of course, I can't sing. I'm so very bad at it. But I'm lucky to have a song beautiful enough that the words are more important than the voice singing them.

The lullaby was written by Seraph Ailith. Part of me wonders where a woman gets such beautiful ideas. The most of me hopes it was Jayus and Death both that helped Sister Ailith with her writing. If any wish to hear it for themselves, I recommend you write to Ailith. I've got a feeling can sing it better than I can.

(Though this last child to enter the world - Lady Ivy Mae Farshaw - got to hear Lady Sorrel sing this song to her. Now that was beautiful!)

From Death's hands, you just woke.
Dearest soul, you now spoke.
Rest your eyes, as crying dies,
We love you, your family and folk.

Mother of Beginnings, we thank you.
Sweetest soul, you are renewed.
Held close to my heart, never to part,
Welcome to life, my baby, true.

Relationship Note on Thesarin

Without war, what would the fighters and sword-smiths do?

I believe, were there no war in this world, all those fighters would have to dance, and all the sword-smiths would have to turn their hammers to making roses of steel.

We'd live in a world where matters were settled by foot races and decided by the most clever poem. Where the most beautiful and moving painting would win the day. Where those that dealt death would instead turn their talents to climbing and jumping and swimming.

What a world that would be.

First Brand. Then the slaughters in the Mourning Isles. Then the Thirteen Hammers Campaign. Then Brand again. Then the slaughters out in the Gray Forest. Then the attack on Maelstrom. Then the Slaver in the North. Now the Pirate King sails.

It seems war is a constant in this world.

We suffer great losses. We have great victories. But through it all, I have learned not to question the horrors of war. Whatever it is that has happened, it seems it can always get worse.

*This is a sketch of a man, hunched forward over a table, staring at a sheet of paper. On his face rests a look that is equal parts disappointment and frustration. His hair is kept short and a thin, unkempt beard grows on his face. Despite the disregard for fine grooming, the man is objectively handsome, with a strong jaw, a straight nose, and light eyes. Those familiar with the man will likely recognize a certain Boroughs-based Playwright.*

Commoners Bulletin V1N6 - 12/18/1007 AR (01/13/2017)

The Commoners Bulletin is a condensed version of the news, happenings, and proclamations given out in the past fortnight! If you have news to include in the bulletin, or you believe I've missed something, please send word! (OOC: Using mail is good!)
-Mae Grayhope, Commoners Council

NEWS:

*House Kennex is taking great strides to rebuild their navy! Considering it was total chaos there just a few months ago, this is great news.

*A report has come out of House Redrain outlining the military capabilities of the Compact. This kind of thorough review is almost surely going to save lives. It is, of course, not public, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it and I can assure you it’s very boring. Still, thank you, House Redrain.

*Ostria has been fortified. That’s the home of House Mazetti. Makes you wonder what all the other cities across the Compact look like right now.

*A ruckus erupted in the white journals after a certain pot-stirrer questioned the Compact’s relationship with the people called the Nox’alfar. I think there’s a lot to be said on this matter, but I won’t throw in my two cents. Instead, I’ll just make plain the history: The Nox’alfar were fighting against Tolamar Brand and they are our sworn allies.

*A pair of Graysons are touring their lands, celebrating one year of marriage, and listening to the concerns of their people. Anyone need a favor? Anyone got a complaint? Particularly anyone of Grayson fealty? Now’s the time to share! Send a message to Princess Tikva or Prince Ainsley.

*Word’s traveling about a new trade deal between House Leary, House Grimhall, and House Navegant. It involves lumber. Looks like the Mourning Isles will be repairing their fleets rather quickly!

*Restoration of the blocks destroyed in the fire weeks back have been progressing nicely. With sizeable donations from the nobility (and one commoner!), the damage should be all repaired soon.

*Relatedly, there was an event called the Armor Run! Best I can tell, a bunch of people got suited up in their armor and raced through town while others threw pastries at them? It seems remarkably silly, but remarkably silly is about what we need right now. The money raised was donated to those affected by the fire.

*Another charity event sparked a lot of talk about bottles of pink liquor. The Murder of Crows hosted its second Darts and Drinking night. Did they really serve pink liquor? (Yes, we did.) Proceeds will go to the Crow Soup Kitchen.

PROCLAMATIONS:

*High Lord Darren Redrain has announced the creation of new house. House Acheron is headed by Marquis Mydas, and holds the March of Aviaron Peak. Good luck and Gods bless, House Acheron.
*Deacon Pateris has been named Ambassador to Setarco. Ambassador Deacon will lead diplomatic relations between Setarco and the rest of the Compact, as well as to the Abandoned and any other entities.
*The Palace has announced the birth of Crown Princess Alessa Grayson and her younger twin brother Prince Elisian Grayson. Queen Symonesse is recovering well. Gods bless the wee Princess Alessa! Gods bless the wee Prince Elisian!
*Dame Thena Grayhope, Acting Commander of the Knights of Solace, has called the Knights of Solace to the east coast of Arvum to defend against the coming enemy fleets.
*Grand Duchess Eleyna has committed the forces of the Lyceum to the defense of Arx, and called to rally against the Pirate King.
*Blessed Cassandra, Archlector of Gloria, has announced the creation of a new division of the Templars who will be guarding the graveyards, the tombs, and the shrines of the Queen of Endings. These Templars will be known as the Late Knights. It’s a pun. Death likes puns.
*Count Gailin Fireviper has wed Lady Titania Kennex, who is now Countess-Consort Titania Fireviper. Congratulations! Rival house Icehawk was unavailable for comment.
*Duke Harlan Ashford has announced the end of the search for Lady Aislin Ashford. I’m not going to stop looking, Duke.

We all have sins in our past, whether they are our own, or whether they are those of our family and ancestors. Some are large, some are great. Some of us benefited for the struggles of the Compact. Some of our families gained piles of silver from misfortune. Some of us were granted great power by the workings of our enemies. I do not believe these actions define who we are - especially when they are wholly the doing of other people. That is not what the Queen of Endings and Mother of Beginnings shows us. That is not the change Lagoma brings. To question the commitment of the Grayhope family to the Compact because one of its members takes issue with the history of the Nox'alfar - a history marked by blood and violation of the Laws of Limerance was we understand them - seems unfair, unkind, and against the virtues of the Gods. Even if one member of the family was not faithful to the Compact. After all, many of this family's members dutifully serve the Gods and the Compact.

It would be on par with questioning the commitment of a noblewoman whenever she disagreed with the majority, simply because she was first made a Marquessa by the Rex'alfar.

So, welcome to Arx, Princess Alessa and Prince Elisian (Mae)! May you know how blessed you are, and use well the life our Mother has given us.

Commoners Bulletin V1N5 - 12/02/1007 AR (01/06/2018)

The Commoners Bulletin is a condensed version of the news, happenings, and proclamations given out in the past fortnight! If you have news to include in the bulletin, or you believe I've missed something, please send word! (OOC: Using mail is good!)
-Mae Grayhope, Commoners Council

NEWS:
*The forces of our enemy to the east - the Pirate King - have been spotted moving in force towards the Mourning Isles and Saffron Chain. The enemy fleets are quite large. I’ll put off the rest of my thoughts on this one until the end, so people might finish reading this.

*A school has opened! Or something like a school. It’s up at the Arvum Botanical Gardens, and teaching trade skills, in herbology, gardening, etc. It is for orphaned human children, though orphaned mice are probably welcomed, too.

*Rumor has it that Marquessa Freja Nightgold is now blind. This following rumors of an odd scuffle in a bar? If anyone has details, do please send them!

*A nice quiet dinner at Malvici estate was interrupted when two men attempted to assassinate the Duchess General. The Duchess General was shot in the shoulder, it seems, but is otherwise well. Frankly, I assumed this was how most dinner parties went at Malvici estate. Speculation is that this attack is related to the struggles in Southport.

*The statue of Mangata has apparently been cleaned up? An odd slime or rust had been growing on it, and nothing seemed to work to remove it. But after a group of women sang to it, it got better? Surely, the Gods are mysterious.

*It seems Merek Black - Crafter, Iron Guardsman, Scholar, Velenosa-sworn - has been doing well with his business! Well enough that he gave a big donation to various people in need.

*A bard has been singing about how great Lord Corban Telmar is. I have no comment.

PROCLAMATIONS:
*Prince Victus wrote an open letter to the Pirate King assuring that the man would be destroyed, along with any of his followers, called Marinites. Many houses joined in support of this message. Victus also called this Pirate King “Koraj Marin”, who is a historical leader of the long-since-destroyed House Marin. Koraj Marin’s statue stands in the Hall of Heroes, Thrax Hall.
*Magpie Grayhope, Deputy Minister of Prodigal and Refugee Affairs, objected to the recent measures of the Inquisition and Iron Guard to apprehend cultists, on the grounds that it was unjust to Prodigals and refugees. He promised to do better to protect these communities. The Inquisition objected to the objections.
*Archlector Cassandra of Gloria assured the Compact that the Templars were ready to defend Arvum from the Pirate King.
*Archlecor Bianca of Vellichor announced three new Voices of the Scholars: Lord Samael Bisland was appointed Emissary of the Scholars, Princess Ann Redrain was appointed Lead Archivist, and Lord Percephon Telmar was appointed Magister of the Academy.
*Archlector Madeleine of Mangata called for renewed prayers to Mangata, so that the Goddess might help us against the coming storm.
*Prince Fiarcha Valardin has been named Voice of Greenmarch. I’ll just leave a section in here for Greenmarch Voice-related matters.
*In response to news of Marquessa Freja’s injuries, her brother, Prince Fergus, put out a request for information about the incident and offered to pay for it.
*Duchess General Calypso announced that the threats she spoke of in the Assembly of Peers was just a joke. Anyone interested in buying the Sovereign Bridge? Come talk to me, we’ll work out a deal, cheap.
*Princess Isolde Velenosa is to marry High Inquisitor Alistair, the common Prodigal. It’s a known fact that Velenosa Princesses can only marry commoners.
*The Memorial Park has officially opened! This is a sprawling burial grounds outside of Arx, which houses a Temple. All burials will be paid for by the Faith, though if anyone wishes a fancier grave or mausoleum, the Faith will take donations to pay for it. The Temple is absolutely beautiful! Go visit, before it fills up with mourners.
*Archlector Cassandra of Gloria announced the passing of Legate Guiscard, Sword of the Faith. May his trip back to the Queen of Endings be a pleasant one.
*Lady Carita Darkwater, herself born common before being ennobled, has ennobled Inquisitor Halsim Duskwave. To say this caused a bit of an uproar amongst the people - commoners and peers alike - would be an understatement. Lady Carita seems to be taking her house motto to heart - Daring is no vice.
*Lord Darrow Darkwater, Voice of House Darkwater, has elevated Lady Skye Blackshore to Baroness of Blackshore. He has also called up his vassals for the defense of Darkwater. Lord Darrow also called to the whole Compact for assistance - for soldiers, for ships, for coin, for supplies.

And that brings me to what I said I would write about in the beginning. An attacking navy is coming for the Compact. Their movement is low, but their fleet is massive. They are without doubt servants of the Abyss. Citizens of the Compact, know that things will get worse. But know that the King and the High Houses will stand and fight against this threat. For now, the best we can all do is keep calm and carry on.
