I've been remiss in attending social engagements that are *just* for fun. Too often I allow myself to be swept away in business. Though it does occurr to me that I should host some smaller dinner parties sometime in the immediate future. There's nothing wrong with some light work while eating good food, is there??

Yesterday my cousin put on an extremely impressive party for her birthday that involved massive quantities of cookies. I was mildly concerned that the main hall was going to be a total disaster this morning. I crept out, fearful. But as I inspected all of the tables, chairs and fireplaces, I was able to confirm the place was in one piece.
Then I carried a couch back to the sitting room despite the protests of one of the stewards. He kept shouting, "That's my job, my lord! Please put the couch down!" but I assured him it was just fine, I was happy to help!
I think I pulled a stitch. Mother Sophie is going to be very irate.

Relationship Note on Bliss
There's never a boring week, I can say that much. And while I don't enjoy receiving missive after missive after missive after missive after missive about relatives of mine, I did have the opportunity to exchange words with some very pleasant people. So perhaps in that, there's a silver lining to all of this unfortunate business.
In particular, Radiant Bliss Whisper was extremely graceful and patient throughout the entire matter, for which I'm endlessly grateful.

We're beginning to hear reports back on the situation with the Great Road. I'm extremely happy with the work completed by Nicia and Lady Jenessa. They're both wildly talented and we wouldn't have been set up quite as nicely as we ended up being.

I had a fine, quiet birthday that I celebrated with my family. It went without much notice and little fuss. However Eadric did yank the tablecloth off in an attempt to show us a magic trick and knock all the dishware onto the floor in the process, but I suppose no evening can be perfect.

As winter draws another year to a close, I'm reminded of several important things.
This year was my fifth year as the reigning Duke of Artshall. It's also the fifth year since my father passed. I still desperately wish for his wisdom everyday.
This upcoming winter will be my fourth wedding anniversary with my wife. A woman with infinite patience, a unique perspective and a backbone made of the strongest steel in the Compact.
This upcoming spring will be Eadric's third birthday. He speaks well for a defiant, overly adventurous child that's turning every hair on my head gray or white. If we can ever temper that fiery personality of his, he'll be a fine leader. If he can survive climbing on every structure and causing chaos wherever he goes. So many Ifs.
Annalise has already turned one and her second birthday in the fall seems so very far away. But she's a delightful child, sweet and calm. Not prone to the same mercurial mood swings as her brother, reserved. I can't believe that I'm about to put this to paper but sometimes I wish she had a touch of his adventuresome spirit.

Relationship Note on Demura
The Peers of the Compact are often caught in situation where they must travel to and from their ancestral homes and Arx. It's not unusual for people to go months without seeing one another as they're embroiled in the affairs of stewardship. I experience this frequently with Marquessa Demura, a brilliant hands on leader of her people. When I do get the opportunity to sit down with her, usually at my home in Arx, I'm always impressed by her intelligence and ability to not become overly exited by any one emergency. And there's never just one, is there, Marquessa?

Next month another year will draw to a close, turning the page to a new chapter of trials and tribulations. Artshall has had a prosperous twelve months despite some minor setbacks and despite the push of enemies that would be glad to see us grow weaker and celebrate in our defeat. But we don't and we won't. Our spirits are high, the army is strong and we're in the midst of a major project that will hopefully see long term changes in the way we care for and support our people. Not just in Artshall, but in the greater expanse of the Oathlands as well. The Laurents remain a strong, industrious family among the Peers of the Compact.
And while I tread the road ahead with cautious optimism, because there will always be setbacks, it's optimism all the same. It's hope for the future and faith in those who work alongside me.

I had started and stopped the plans for the Artshall School of Agriculture, numerous times. I've brought it up so often that I'm afraid my family and close friends were getting ready to flail me if I brought it up one more time. But it's finally starting to shape into something real. It's strange to me that I feel so distant from it. Orders given out and plans brought together though the hands of others. Without them, this would really be nothing.
Lord Kedehern Laurent, Lady Shae Keaton, Lady Amari Keaton, Lady Adelphie Harthall and Lady Tesha Telmar helped lead some of the initial explorations to the site that would eventually become our foundation. They fought to cleanse the land of dangers and bring it back under Compact control, assisted by the Natalia Whisper and Dame Thena Grayhope of the Knights of Solace.
We still have a long way to go and more to fight for, I suspect. Something worth building is something worth knocking down to someone else.
