There's stories that if you go walking in the dark jungles of the Chains you might come across a half-man, half-beast spirit being. Like wild children that wear fur over their bodies with long arms and long legs, doomed to have hands also for their feet and a long arm without a hand which they still grasp with. They're tricksters to their very core, intelligent only if it furthers their laziness. Have an insatiable curiosity and greed to take whatever they can get their hands on. Most aren't larger than a child, many are smaller. If you see one, you're not seeing the ten that are already in your camp.

Don't go looking for them.

I’d like to see within Arx a public garden in the palace ward which has every Queen and her consort, or King and his consort, since the founding of Arx. As you wind through the garden path you can be reminded of what they are remembered doing before they died, what mark they left. There’s plenty of gaps that I have. The same could be said then for each great house. These leaders, no matter how long they led, deserve to be kept alive in our memories.

Walking through a garden, seeing what Queen-Consort or King-Consort such and such did. What their king or queen did.

The Templars are a good example of proper worship with the gods. They don't ask for victory, they ask for the opportunity to show they will not be vanquished even if they fall in glorious battle.

If someone asks for strength, the gods don't suddenly pile muscles and sinew on the individual. They give them opportunities to show their fortitude and perseverance. If they pray to keep their loved ones safe, the gods don't put a shackle and keep people from doing things. Instead, there's opportunities for us to mentor and mitigate what we can and have the serenity in accepting that there simply aren't things we can stop or prevent. We have everything inside us to nurture, train and grow.

The gods aren't our servants. They are the most powerful and mighty ideals to help guide us in a dark world.

I recall the last time I was in Caldera, walking in the wilderness and coming across a stream. Usually, you'd avoid such a thing as it might be acidic or poisonous. This stream was clear and I could see actual little plants growing with tiny fish moving in them.

An oasis of blue in a background of crimson.

Today a very large oval object was transported to the grounds, looking like it's carved from bone with a rough exterior of tan and pale white but I'm told it is a rare egg of something.

Time will tell if whatever is inside decides to emerge.

There's a very good piece of wisdom that would have found it's way across all domains and continents. Knowledge can be a dangerous thing when you know enough of a subject to think you're right, but not enough to know you're wrong.

Which is why having a mentor from your overlord's or highlord's house is crucial for houses that have newly joined the Compact.

There's no weakness in seeking knowledge or identifying that you don't know what you don't know.

I'm thankful that I have mentors ready and available.

This week I have shown devotion to the Goddess of War, the Glowing Maiden of Glory with a Rite to Gloria at the holy encampment of the War Goddess herself. Two champions fought with fervor and excellence, and I am very proud how lord Haakon fought and took first blood against me. We are stronger for this and every time I fight with the Eswynds, I am glad.

And so after this, I will move to do a rite of cleansing in which I honour each of the gods with prayers and offerings to beseech them. This rite of cleansing I've been thinking on for some time. How heavy the veil has been draped across Arvum casting a shadow over things that should never have been forgotten and now are stolen or lost. How histories became legends, and those legends became fantastical myths and tales of vivid imaginations. How alliances simply were forgotten. How an entire people and empire became Lost, serpents slipped through the tall grass.

How bright truth will be when humanity steps out of the darkened cave and looks upon creation as if seeing a new world.

And what greater threats lurk that the veil was placed to hide minds from.

A ship without at least one star to sail by is one that can find themselves on treacherous waters. It's wise to seek out assistance by those who understand they are mentors and not simply peers. I'm thankful I have such.

Ivanite strongholds in the Lang Drager are being abandoned, the survivors there refused to accept a peaceful and honourable evacuation and chose instead to try and break out through the Eswynd blockade in a desperate last bid to avoid final defeat.

While the battle was fierce on the sea with multiple ships boarded, they refused quarter. Glory was gripped and earned by the Eswynds and their allies that day, peace paid in blood. I enjoyed having lord Savio and the elder warrior Zakhar as guests with the Gorgon.

Lord Ambrose Garon was an excellent opponent and highly capable swordsman. When I slew Lord Amrose Garon, I prayed that his next life will be one of honourable service. May he think on that during his time with the Queen and the dishonour he stains his family now.

I also found a hole in my money pouch.

There’s something to be said about knighthood being granted to a person who has done exemplary service, shown steadfast loyalty and dedicated to serve on the battlefield. It’s earned through extraordinary ability shown in action which honor and glory are attained. When a noble selects you amongst your peers to be elevated. One shouldn’t ask to be knighted, it’s an honour that must come willingly from others. The bond between knight and their liege should be unbreakable and the knight’s honour unyielding and unbending.

Likewise with peerage, a house shouldn’t be petitioning themselves. Their overlord and highlord ought to be the ones championing the elevation on their societal strength for reasons that they’re willing to stand and fight for. If your overlord and highlord aren’t there pushing, you should then continue serving in honour and humility to bring credit and power to your house and your overlord’s. It isn't my place to try persuading my overlord or highlord for further honours and elevation, they are the font to which I drink from. The cup doesn't say to the well "fill me with more", the well is the one which will dictate if a greater vessel can be used.

Neo-nobility and the threat of change and control among the established hierarchy has been bothering people in the Compact. This is built from whispers from the numerous enemies of the Compact that desire to sow discontent and disarray into the primary focus what the Compact stands for. I looked at the Compact as an enemy once, and worked to understand the weaknesses and strengths of each house, domain and realm. But now I stand with the Compact as a protector of it.

New houses need to work hard to establish a strong foundation of repeated actions of beneficial change in this village called the Compact and be good neighbours, seeking advice from those already in the village and be mindful and respectful neighbours. Established houses need to look at these new houses as neighbours instead of competition and know that there's one more who is willing to help patrol and defend the village as it grows. Established houses should work hard on inviting and working alongside their new neighbours to build rapport and help the newcomers feel safe.

The selfishness inherent in mankind needs to be used to further Gild's benign civilisation in the bonds of honour and fidelity we forge willingly together, otherwise the opposite is to further the desires of Avarice.

But as with all things, change that I wish to see starts first with me.

We’ve said farewell to my cousin Cassiopeia as she returns to the Proscipi to be their new Marquessa. It will create a strengthened bond between the two houses and I look forward to helping them strengthen and enlarge their holdings across the southern Chains. The Proscipi have been working extremely hard in repairing Tremorus, the rabbits are very active and busy.

There’s been two ascensions announced at the Assembly of Peers. House Malespero rises to become a duchy and the Redreefs climb to the level of a march. I feel both have significantly worked hard publicly and that doesn’t bring to light all the work they’ve done behind the scenes. I wish them both well as they build a stronger future for all.

There’s been appointments of voices for houses. Lady Scythia for the Redreef. I’m looking forward to the Gorgon coming to the aid of the Redreef and battling forces that threaten them.

Cousin Calla announced I will not just be voice for house Vaevici, but her appointed heir. While we are both children of Sangris, I hope to fulfill the honour given to me to the best of my abilities and not let her or Sangris down.

Otherwise, the drums of war can be heard and so I’ll leave Arx to meet the Gorgon which will fight the Eswynds against Ivanites. Helping the houses of others strengthens the alliances made between the greater and great houses and keeps those in lower houses in the best shape to fight. By fighting together, we foster great bonds between houses. I look forward to bringing tribute to Gloria when I return.

In the banns there’s been talk of animals being knighted. It’s caused a wide discussion on the merits of prodigals being brought back to the Compact, of potential negative impacts to traditions. It isn’t my place to challenge a better, they have peers to keep things in check. That’s the way of nobility, it isn’t an out of control mob that lashes out, it’s a steel gloved hand ready to provide a check if you do something wrong and give you the benefit of learning from making a mistake but you must keep the bruise to check that ego.

A lord from a lower house trying to challenge a duke would be out of place and wrong. It's called peerage for a reason.

Knighthood. There is a path for exceptional commoners to be recognised for their exceptionalism and earn nobility through fidelity, honour and commitment to justice in a path that is as old as nobility itself and the champions of old. Knighthood isn’t just an honourific to be given. It’s an exchange of promise to defend and champion the noble who is choosing to use their own social power to elevate a lower person. Knighting animals? Ridiculous. It can’t happen, there’s no oaths or exchange of fealty between an animal and a noble. A noble that tries to knight a beast to me shows they have no social power as they aren’t able to find a true champion who will pledge themselves wholly.

As a Warmonger, I follow a code with serious dedication. Knights I’ve come across on either side of the battle as allies or enemies all have shown themselves dedicated to their codes and to compose themselves with honour in all things as it represents the house which raised them higher. To have them considered alongside animals disrespects the houses who have raised those champions, and disrespects the the honour and pledges those champions have offered to those houses.

The Vaevici bent the knee to the Pravus and have pledged ourselves and our honour to the Compact and for which it stands. We are quite prepared to pay whatever cost it takes to defend the Pravus, our King and our Compact allies. Honour demands it.

The banns this week spoke about a newly formed house. A story of an arrogant and spoiled princess turned into a sharp and skillful Whisper, emerging as a newly minted Baroness. What a story of growth and rising from a setback to being re-recognised as a noble with the earned sole responsibility for a domain that has seen much setback. Acorns might be little things that can be trampled underfoot, but with care they can turn into the mighty oak. The renaming of the area to the Ardent Wood is a positive one, something that shows they might have the passion and enthusiasm to succeed where others were stricken down. I pray and very much hope that the Elwood family are given support to see them grow strong. A strong house means a strong Compact. May your house flourish, Baroness Natalia Elwood.

In other thoughts, I was thinking on heirloom weapons of houses.Heirloom weapons often are praised for their sharpness, or the swift way they piece, cut or bash. The stories that account for the glory that imbues their physical shape, earned through multiple wars or an epic struggle or particular set of battles.

As a Warmonger, weapons of war are things to marvel at but I feel that one ought to love what they represent and defend. Weapons wielded and war conducted without honour just is destruction for the sake of oblivion.

Relationship Note on Piccola

I enjoy reading her writings when I'm made aware of them. A smart scholar or student of war would collect all her writings and put them in a book.

A few interesting things in the banns this week.

A marriage between the Malespero and Darkwater was announced with Marquessa Lianne wedding the newly made lord Apollo. I look forward to seeing what both of them will do, they’re rather active in trying to make things better.

House Sanna announced that lady Sapphira is now appointed their minister of loyalty. As she’s known for her persuasiveness and creative skills in music, she might be able to convince and persuade the best out of their peoples instead of the threat of violence. I wish her and her house well.

Overall, very good and positive things from both of the above items.

Out of the banns…….

I was pleased to assist the Eswynds and their reavers hunting down Ivanite ships seeking to turn the blockade of their embattled settlements in the Lang Drager. The Vaevici ship, the Gorgon, and the Sangrinite Myrmidons who went with me performed excellently. With a dozen Eswynd longships, four other crafts and our own spread out across several miles. On the sixth day past noon, the prey that was slipping through the mists was found. Eight ships in a convoy with a large cog being protected. While the Eswynd main reaving fleet dealt with the escort ships, the Gorgon managed to jam the cog’s rudder while we boarded. Quite a long and hard fought battle resulted on the decks across the large ship, but eventually the ship was taken. The three nobles who were onboard the ship killed themselves to avoid questioning it seems, which is a shame. It was in that fight an archer managed to hit me in my face with an arrow that nearly took me out. On the return back to Arx, I was under the care of lady Medeia who conducted a series of intense surgeries to remove the arrowhead from my face and repair it without issues of bad blood or sickness. I owe her much, and I won’t forget that hard work she did.

I also recently came back from Sangris, after meeting with the S’Ki and then exploring a section of deep jungle and a pyramid that was there. While traps and death waited patiently throughout the corridors deep underground, we were able to reach a main chamber where a great fight took place so long ago. The large ancient metallic serpent that was found was killed, and I took back the head. I’ll be interested in studying this to see what stories or lessons can be learned from such a marvelous and amazing creature. I've never seen such a thing before.

In the recent banns…..

The Faith announced via the Dominus that the Eurusi trade is once more opened. I’m not sure who the Silver Sands are, but they feel it seems via trade that it brings peace and understanding. To a Vaevici, only war can bring peace. Peace paid for in bloodshed, or the threat of destruction so others might accept other terms to delay the inevitable should their heads dare to rise up.

The Tyde appointed lord Erasmus as minister of trade, although it came with a point made that anyone complaining would be appointed to a similar position and should they fail, there will be some sort of consequence. Responsibility and humility, power offered and lessons learned. I like that.

There’s another fundraiser for soldiers led by new Archlector Porter that are returning from the fog of war brought about near Pieros. I don’t understand the point of fundraising, the children of Sangris desire nothing more than to give their all so when they die they can find their place at the Temple of Pyros. Every single person united in our dogged pursuit of war and battling through the Caldera and beyond. Should they find themselves unable to do their original purpose due to taking wounds (be they civilian or military), don’t we take care of them and put them to work in a manner that gives them a new purpose yet still support Sangris? A difference perhaps between Arvum and Saffron in how we go about doing things trying to achieve a similar goal.

Baroness Calla is to wed lord Santi Malvici, bringing more allies for the Vaevici leadership’s dream of peace in the Caldera. Lord Santi will make a good partner and pillar, I look forward to seeing what both Baroness Calla and lord Santi do together and separately for Sangris and beyond.

Outside of the banns, sometimes there exists such differences between peoples that it feels one is between an immovable object against an unstoppable force. Beliefs held so strongly that it makes difficult for the very thing we ultimately desire in the other and ourselves, the opportunity to change. But I’m thankful for the opportunity others give me to learn about them and their cultures, even if they’d normally avoid such a gift.

Otherwise this week I'm seeking out theologists, I've questions about old stories of the Faith, legends and myths that the various domains and lands hold.

The banns across the city have been interesting this week. Happiness, mourning and irritation.

There’s increasing distress and irritation within the peerage regarding the institution of nobility, and the rather quick increase in numbers of those newly minted nobility, the neo-nobles.

What I can say is that at one point, every house was new and with the Reckoning at Arx, many houses would have died out were it not for an heir named due to their actions. It was their actions which made them stand out, rising to the concept of nobility. And this continues even to this very day especially with new domains of prodigals desiring to embrace the Compact and join it to defend all others. Ancient houses like the Vaevici, while seen as new to the Compact, can bring interesting ideas and help to our Compact. Likewise, houses such as the Vaevici ought to find great and ancient Compact houses in which to be guided, mentored and developed. Nobility shouldn’t be thrown away, it’d destroy an ideology whereby we reward those who set aside personal desires and instead take on greater responsibilities so that many more lives might thrive. Prodigal houses should be encouraged then to embrace, adopt and work with old houses, so that while we have sometimes great cultural differences, we have bent the knee and publicly shown that we desire to take the best the Compact has to offer. Putting egotistical pride as a roadblock in the way of learning from an old noble house isn’t a noble trait, it’s selfish and not noble. Embracing that we can learn while also offering something from our own culture is noble. Being Prodigal means we understand and accept that we are better peoples for joining the Compact, it’s honourable. Bending the knee and then trying to undermine the Compact’s traditions and conventions is wrong, it’s dishonourable.

In other news that reached me, house Crovane had a birth of a son to the duchess and duke who was named after the mother’s late brother. A powerful gift one can give a child to link them to the memory of the past. May the boy grow up with the spirit of his late uncle, yet large enough to step out of the dead's shadow and make his own story.

As for memories, house Fidante announced the death of Duke Inigo who died defending his people. There is a saying in the Red City, "A warrior of Sangris has no dream but to die under the shade of her city walls, gone in the blazes of honor to feed the Pyros of her people. In the death of one, a hundred more grip their spears tighter." My hope is that this Vaevici blessing is given to house Fidante, that their enemies find that they’ve only strengthened house Fidante through their dishonourable attack within the sanctity of a home.

The banns recently were full of interesting items.

House Proscipi lost their Marquessa and much life and territory, but Lords Giorgi and Savio were raised to the nobility. As it’s spring, I’m reminded of Sangris and the offerings during the changes of the seasons at the altar of change. To smell the fresh flowers, fruits and incense as paper prayers and remembrances are offered up, we remember our promises to defend Sangris and ask the lady of change to help us continue to evolve to become stronger against our enemies, and thank those who have passed for their honourable service so that Sangris might live on long after their death. I will burn a written prayer for the fallen Proscipi, that Tremorus might gain strength with their memories held firmly.

There is a new guild master of the Crafters Guild, a Caprice Artiglio. I don’t know the name but that matters very little, the craft capability of Arx can’t be overstated in their capabilities. I’m not one to seek out art or fineries, but the Compact has an insatiable hunger to consume goods and I wish this person the best to lead the offerings for that beast.

The Kennex appointed lady Cecilia as the minister of public relations. This post seems like it’s diplomatic and political, I’m expecting to see lady Cecilia sometime in the future then.

Otherwise, it’s been an interesting week as I paid homage to the Goddess of War and offered up trophies from the Siege of Sangris to thank the Pravus, Graysons and Proscipi for their assistance. I also will close this with a statement I made to a friend:

Winning the battle is only one part. The more important part is winning and coming to a greater understanding as a person. If you gain this, it makes the actual battle nearly irrelevant in terms of glory. If you haven’t come to a greater understanding after the Battle at Pieros, Tremorus or the Siege at Sangris, then you’ve missed the opportunity and point. Beware wars simply for the sake of destroying, it’s a beast that has an unstable appetite and will consume you.
