Unknown and Unremembered
We guard against darkness

(I wonder, still, about the unsigned letters.)

Relationship Note on Valery

"Remember the quiet wonders."

Aside: The tea worked wondrously well.

[ From the restful desk of B. Mercier, Steward: ]

* Seek funding for the Salon. With rumors of approaching threats, this is going to be more challenging than I first imagined.

* Practice. Seek armor; light - flexible. Start to hone those skills that Silas taught me so that if I ever need to use them - I am prepared. (More the practice, less the fear.)

* Perhaps greater introspection is needed, reflecting upon the dark. Learning to be less afraid of the unknown. Embrace it and make it useful to me.

Relationship Note on Jeremiah

( I really should address certain aspects of my closest relationships here, right?

But, I won't. )

Instead - a quote. It might have been from father, or, some other merchant who heard it from a farmer: "If I want a happy crop, I must ally myself with the soil. Study it and help it to the utmost; untiringly."

My meager attempts shall endure:

'Tis difficult, I find, offering verse on demand -
thoughts to words, pen in hand.
(written quickly else they disappear
unfortunate and suddenly, I fear)
They flee, erased - as swift as tides clear the sand.

( Overheard from somewhere 'feathery' - as Silas puts it: )

'Tis thus the story goes -
A warrior bold, with spurs of gold
Went forth to meet his foes.

But 'ere before he went -
He sang a song of old,
An' upon a knee he bent.

To please his lady love,
Before he travelled away -

(But 'tween you and I,
th' voice made children cry)

So, out the door she shoved.

While down the road he rode,
He sang tribute to her eyes -
When steed from bordeom slowed
He waxed lyrical 'pon her --

( No more, no more. Despite my melody, the lyrics are awful. )

(From the desk of B. Mercier, Steward:)

* Honesty. Respect. Given freely until there is reason to renounce. There were notes that I made during the planning meeting of the Salon - but, there are too many of them - and too disorganized. I will need to sort through them.

* Trust. Need it. Are there books on the subject...?

* Patience. I could benefit from a more of it. Apologies to any that have had to deal with that ... in every instance in which I (and others) could have benefited from waiting. (I couldn't. I tried. You know who you are.)

* Progress. Plans. The Salons and the Diplomatic Corps. So pleased. So very, very pleased.

Who has been the kindness in your life?

How were they kind to you?

Often, do you consider their actions in your daily life?

Alas, these are only odd questions that I find myself posing.

Really.

Eventually, I should answer them myself.

They - then - the citizens of Arx would follow suit.

* Curious, wondering if the blending of teas and creation of wines are not too dissimilar from chemicals - things all exact, involved, experimenting until the desired result is obtained. Received feedback from J., S., and B. Waiting to hear from M concerning new product.

(Shall I bring you some of my lavender tea, scholar? I'm told it is quite soothing.)

* My mind, my energies, have been frenetic. Eyes heavy with sleep. My steps prowling and restless. I am focused in my work, yes, but I am aimless in regard to the rest of it. I require sleep and perhaps time to consider my next steps.

(You cannot have it all, despite wanting it.)

* Despite uncertainties, I do enjoy meeting those new citizens of Arx - noble and commoner alike. Watching is interesting. Asking questions and learning about where they have come from, what brings them here. Some, yes, are more truthful than others.

* Silas sent me a letter, about --

(Pardon. I will not detail it here, scholar. I am finished now.)

My latest attempts at blending teas and wines have dramatically improved.

Modesty would dictate that I not compare my most recent creation to my elder brother's.

However, my confidence demands otherwise.

What are the most important lessons you, (dear citizen or visitor of Arx) have learned in life?

Relationship Note on Abbas

"When one is as lost in thought as you. One might stumble. When sailors and reavers are so lost in their head -- they miss the danger off in the distance. Sometimes I envy those who can afford to be lost in their own thoughts whenever they desire."

After reading an entry of interest, curiosity leads me to pen a question posed to any that might read this --

How do you define beauty?

Intellect and good character is beautiful. Survivors, struggling out of the mud like a lotus are beautiful. Perfectly flawed and honest about fault is beautiful. Lit from within, burning bright passion is beautiful.

Cold winds blow against the hill,
With frost across the plain.
Away, Winter soon will go--

Yet, I wait with patience still.
Knowing Spring with come again--
Leaving violets 'neath the snow.
