All of those last things I must put in place before heading to Setarco are complete. I go with complete confidence in the commanders of our troops, and the other High Generals of both Velenosa and Thrax; something I am sure may surprise people as we have never been traditional allies. But let this show that when there are innocent lives at stake, we will all band together to do what needs to be done. And that we can work together, all contributing, so that the best ideas from every fealty can be pulled together.

And each night, I will pray to the Gods of the Pantheon that we serve them well in our endeavor.

Relationship Note on Khanne

Family.

It's something that means a lot to me. Not only the family of blood ties, but the family we choose. Those few special people who you really get you, and support you, and are there for you no matter what even though they don't have to be. The ones who push you to do what is best for you, even when you don't want to hear it. And, will not hesitate to give their honest opinion. Percy has been one of those few, for me, since we met. And in return, I have been an overprotective dragon in addition to all the rest.

Being his other half naturally means you become a part of that as well. So, welcome to the family.

Relationship Note on Ianna

I should clarify, that the marriage between Fiachra and I was political as it secured the blood tie between Greenmarch and Valardin with the birth of Princess Ellara. When my brother Valen was killed, it left the blood tie that was to be forged between he and Marian sadly unfulfilled.

I will not deny that we are very much in love though, as it is a blessing to us both and our union.

My hope is that there will be a worthy match for you, who will be proud to take the Greenmarch name, if duty does not take you elsewhere.

Relationship Note on Edain

You're a DAD! And I know you will be an amazing one! So, be extra careful; I have requested that Reigna seek out some shoes to keep handy in case you do something that deserves a shoe thrown at you, since I will not be at Stormwall to do it.

Relationship Note on Orazio

I must thank you, Father Orazio, for your missive on the matter that caught my attention in the onslaught of white journals. I am quite relieved to hear that I had obviously misunderstood your statement; what was a comment on doctrine and standards of behavior, but which appeared to be related to what I have obviously misinterpreted as an over-arching discussion on unity between the faithful and prodigal houses which practices shamanism.

You have my most sincere and public apologies of course.

Relationship Note on Orazio

Forgive me, Father Orazio, but I feel I must ask based on your comments about human sacrifice...

Which Prodigal Houses do you have proof of supporting such abomination? The Oathlands still strictly forbids both blood magic and human sacrifice so I would see that matter dealt with immediately.

You know, of course, that it takes a bit of time to get used to wearing armor. So today, we started with the helmet and cuirass and of course she needed some help keeping her balance. But oh, the look of pride on Ellara's little face as she toddled down the hall like the tiniest little Knight.

I'm certain I saw a few expressions of sheer terror on several guards faces. But Herald Steve, gods bless him, announced her entrance into the hall like she was a visiting Knight.

Relationship Note on Marian

I become more convinced as each day passes that as Nia and Ellara grow older, they will together become an unstoppable force of destr... good, in the world. As your Nia begins eyeballing daggers, Ellara is enamored of armor. Now that she is walking, she has taken to sneaking up to the table where Edain works and swiping his helmet so she can plop it on top of her head and start running around evading those who try to catch her before she hurts herself. I swear it covers at least half of her, but she is undeterred!

But it's also seriously adorable. She already shouts a garbled battlecry as soon as she gets it on and starts racing.

And now we begin the campaign in earnest. Plans, debates, the gathering of information, and the attention to detail. Perhaps the most difficult part, is to put aside pride so that we can come together as one, with a singular purpose to drive back the enemy. I know I struggle with my own, and seek guidance in being sure I advocate for what is best for the compact. May the Gods guide us in the days to come, and may we serve them well.

Relationship Note on Roran

I am not sure I welcome change anymore, though I also no longer feel a gut clenching fear at the thought of it. Sometimes change is eagerly sought, and sometimes it comes unwelcome and unbidden and in ill circumstance. In all cases, I think one needs to be adaptable more than they need to embrace or fear it. You can choose to learn and grow from change. Or, you can choose to become bitter and hateful and lash out at those around you. I prefer to try to learn and grow, regardless how I feel about the change itself.

So I suppose you could say I feel neither welcome or fear at this point, only acceptance.

What a fantastic tournament to honor Gloria! Everyone fought well and honorably. With many thanks to the hosts, The Duke and Duchess Laurent, Lady Jael Laurent. And Duke Arn Telmar.

I can still barely move, but it was entirely worth it.

And congratulations to Sir Thorley, the last man standing!

Relationship Note on Calypso

I've watched you, from that first time we met during a meeting of military minds. And I have never seen you treat any of your troops with less then dignity and respect and the knowledge that they are people with lives and souls outside of war. It is a trait I wanted to make sure I fostered in myself, be it by fighting alongside them, checking up on their recovery from injuries, sending letters of condolence, making sure their families are cared for, or making sure I never ask them to do anything that I wouldn't also do.

But after the siege, with so many losses, I felt like I needed to do more. So I spent a lot of time with those recovering from injuries, and I listened to the stories of their fallen comrades. With Sir Rhys there with me, we wrote every story down. By the time we were done, we had two bound books worth of names and personalities and stories of both the living and the dead. I keep a copy of those books at the manor. And there are copies kept elesewhere; at Sanctum, and with Scholars. They are on my desk, right now, as a reminder while we call the banners once again and plan the battle as best we're able.

That's how I make sure I never forget, and hopefully nor will those who lead after me.

For both of my dear friends Lady Margerie and Sir Norwood:

I feel quite strongly that it is one word. Splitting it into two words just strips the real meaning, and just... lacks a certain oomph in implication.

But I am no scholar. I should ask Percephon!

Any person who has ever led a group of people into any battle is likely to be forced to make unpleasant decisions. And in battle such as the ones we have had to face, it is likely that death will result no matter which choice you make. Ideally, we have a rough idea of what we will be facing going in. The extent of the forces, what type of weapons they will have, and how likely they are to lay down those weapons and bend the knee if we happen to be engaged with Abandoned forces.

Let me note here, that one does not spread plague without knowing that kind of information in advance. You don't accidentally bring enough diseased 'weapons' (clothing, food, rats to let loose) unless you know how much to bring. And it seems to me, that it's a far too dangerous tactic to save as a just in case.

But, let us go through some of the questions a tactician likely asks themselves as they put their options together:

1) How well equipped is our enemy, and how many do we face?
2) How many soldiers do I need in order to win?
3) What will our casualties likely be?
4) What supplies do we need?
5) What can we use to leverage against them?
6) What are all the angles of approach? The best weapons to use?
7) Can we force a surrender with minimal losses?

Out of these questions come multiple options. Each with varying probabilities of success. And as they are reviewed, I also ask myself...

Can I live with myself, choosing this option? Will I venerate Gloria, or disappoint her? Is Sentinel's justice met when doing this? Can we succeed?

Spreading a plague among people in order to kill them off without having to send your soldiers into battle gives me a firm NO on at least the first three questions. There is nothing honorable about making men, women, and children suffer an agonizing, prolonged, death just to save yourself a battle. And that is assuming that a parlay doesn't work.

Prince Abbas chose the easy way out. A cowards choice, that tortured those people before they died. He gave neither they, or his own warriors, a chance to resolve anything honorably. He deserves no praise for that choice. None. In the Oathlands, he is a war criminal. There is no redeeming that with the pretty words of others.

And any Valardin Knight would rather die in battle than agree to this tactic.

Personally, if I am going to be a flower or an ornament, I am going to be a dangerous one. A flower with the sharpest thorns. An ornament with SPIKES and a hilt to... oh wait, that's a flail. I am a dangerous flail!
