*A sketch of an ornate helmet, complete with a delicate face-mask rendered to resemble the late lady Niamh Greenmarch*

The first piece is done. Costly, but worth it. Time-consuming, but a work of passion. To honour the first Paragon, and hopefully start a tradition that can be upheld, down the years.

Relationship Note on Alis

If a certain young princess should find herself with a bit more heft to her excited running around, then I apologise in advance to the shins of those she might encounter.

But I hope she will leave her uncle's helmet alone from now on.

There have been surprising but flattering offers made. In time, I hope to write more of them.

No, not that kind.

I'd like to point out that you don't have to be a noble to become a House Sword.

But you do need to get appointed by one.

Duke Arn has suggested I get to know the troops I aim to command, so, that's what I've spent some time doing. They're nice people. We always have some things in common - being Oathlanders, and a lot of us having grown up in or near Blancbier. Still, it's interesting. I mean, I'm no silk, but...

But I'm silk-adjacent. I don't lack for food, I get to dress nicely, and I have a generous stipend. I carry a sword that has the heft of House Wyrmguard with it.

So reminding the men and women - the soldiers - of Wyrmguard that I'm still human, still a commoner, still one of them...

I don't know if they needed it. But I think I did.

I have come to find that I quite enjoy working in Rubicund, for all that Redsteel requires a patient hand. And I'm pleased to have finished another set of armour.

I also had the joy of working in Alaricite once more. As hard as it is, it is easy to get lost in the work of shaping it. To make it sing. To, as I've discussed with fellow smiths, find the shape it wishes to have.

So far I've been lucky, and not met a piece of alaricite that wanted to be a dagger when I was comissioned to make a piece of armour.

So far.

A certain close friend of mine acquaintance has given me another set of hairpins. They're beautiful. And I add them to my others.

I can't help but feel like he's telling me to grow my hair out, though.

I find myself with a somewhat daunting task, but I have promised to do my best to rise to the challenge. And I was reminded, when speaking with Duke Arn, that I do not stand alone. He's right. I was able to corner Princess Reese and extract a few tales of command and basic tactics, so now I have the commander's view on that, at least. And I will be standing with greater leaders when the time comes.

I am grateful to those willing to aid and stand beside me.

I didn't know Prince Fergus or Princess - Marquessa - Freja very well. I met them, and I managed to win that hand-wrestling contest Prince Fergus arranged. I spoke with his sister briefly during that, too.

But I didn't know them. Not like others did.

So I just read the journals with reverence. They touched many lives, and did many good things.

Perhaps we can be inspired by that.

Relationship Note on Viviana

Lady Viviana and I have found ourselves far too busy lately, but - well. Sometimes you make time.

And we did. And it was good. And I've missed her terribly.

Now I'm sitting here, scribing my journal, and already I miss her again.

I missed out on the free-for-all, which is a shame.

I didn't miss out on the hubbub surrounding it, which isn't.

Her Highness, Princess Reese, has never acted as anything but the very model of grace, compassion, and courage while I have been around. And given that I'm a mere commoner knight, I don't think she'd feel the need to put on airs.

Sometimes, it's nice to take a break from my more involved projects to look at something simple and fairly easy. I owe mistress Valery a big thanks, even if I haven't quite finished what she asked me for just yet. But I'll make sure her lenses are cut and polished just right.

My spar with Lady Joslyn a few weeks back has at least motivated me to get faster on my feet. So I owe her a big thanks - as well as one to Princess Valencia and Princess Reese for acting as instructors.

I'll get there. Then we'll match blades again. I might lose, but not as massively as I did last time.

Southport is called the City of Blades, and while I wish I could have visited it under better circumstances, at least there weren't riots while I was there, which speaks well of the dedication of Duchess Calypso and the Mavlici as a whole, being able to soothe the people in their time of need - and look after those needs.

Serving as bodyguard brought me back to my squiring days, and I can only hope Princess Alis and the Princess-Consort Caelis found my services adequate.

Also, I really need to practice my riding more.

Slowly but steadily, I'm getting somewhere. That is a relief, to be quite honest. And I hope I'll be able to show it in my work.

I'm grateful my clients are patient.

I was pleased to hear that Princess Marian took home the title of Champion of the Gauntlet this year. Though I am sad I managed to miss the event itself.

Next year, I suppose.

Relationship Note on Valencia

The Northern Fox (even if she's moved south again) is a most amazing woman, and quite the deft dancer. With sword in hand, she is adept at weaving in and out of battle, and matching myself against her is a pleasure. It's a very different fighting style from that of the Oathlands.

Relationship Note on Echo

Had the pleasure of meeting her highness, Princess Echo Redrain, over at the Golden Hart. She strikes me as interesting. We have a few things in common and I can only imagine that it'll be a delight to get to know both what those things are in more than broad strokes, and what differ betwen us, other than social rank and place of origin.

With war on the horizon, I find work in abundance. And yet... Even if I had the time and fingers to meet every order - I cannot find joy in such tidings.

I can only finish the armour as best I can and hope to the gods that it will protect the wearers.

Relationship Note on Joslyn

Faced a rather embarrassing defeat at the hands of Lady Joslyn at the arena. Turns out, if your opponent isn't wearing any armour at all, they won't get winded near as fast. And Lady Joslyn has defeated demons with those little needles of hers.

The Rose of Stonewood has Thorns. And on that night I found myself pricked over and over.

Well fought, Lady Joslyn.
