Relationship Note on Niccolo

I met with Uncle Niccolo for the first time since the King's Rest began. He seems... different. He's still condescending and enfuriating of course, but he also seems a bit more paranoid. Where has he been all this time? Surely not hiding from the world. He mentioned that troubles are brewing in the northern islands as well, I'll see what I can find out but I do worry that I'm chasing spectres of a heartbroken man rather than actual conspiracies.

Relationship Note on Niccolo

When Giovanni Artiglio died heroically thwarting an assassin, he left behind only one son to carry on his legacy - Talen. With no father but a wardship by the Great House of Velenosa, Duke Niccolo became the closest paternal figure to the boy. Patience, decorum, wit and strength were instilled within Talen as he was moulded into a worthwhile servant for the Lycene royalty. Talen's respect for Niccolo remained throughout his years and instilled within him the desire to make his grace proud. As Sword to the Grand Duchess of Lyceum, the Duke's daughter Esera, Talen aimed to excel.

Relationship Note on Niccolo

Papa has come out of his self imposed exile and now wanders the streets of Arx. He is still protective of me, and his rage over Mama's death is potent. While I should not worry, I shall have to be careful it does not consume him before his vengeance is slaked. I know he does not particularly approve of my path, I think he still respects it.

Relationship Note on Niccolo

He's been out of sight since Aunt Carlotta was lost in the recent tragedy, or so says the information coming out of the Lyceum. So many have lost so much, it wouldn't be gracious of me to not extend my sympathies in his direction as well, I suppose. He is my uncle after all, more or less. Less since this petty squabbling between us began, perhaps it's time to bury the hatchet. I certainly won't be apologizing first, however.

Relationship Note on Niccolo

Duke Niccolo Velenosa is dignified without being pompous and respectful without resorting to flattery. He seems entirely unforced: either his entire life is a deception or he is genuinely self-contained. There is an economy about his words and actions - he doesn't say too much or too little. He expresses himself without revealing all, and his gestures are those befitting a statesman.

He would be a formidable opponent. I do wish I had been able to see him together with the Grand Duchess Carlotta. Given the lengths he went in order to wed her (who in the Lyceum doesn't know the story?), she must have been an extraordinary woman.

Relationship Note on Niccolo

Uncle Niccolo has barely changed from when I knew him as a girl. Still impossibly proper, still you can't deny his abilities for all I might tease him. Someday I will get him to show his human side, after all he's the man who left his family and risked it all for love, there must be more behind the mask.

Relationship Note on Niccolo

Uncle Niccolo recently lost his wife and while I'm terribly sorry for his loss, it's not like everyone doesn't know she's the one that sent me off to the icy North through no real fault of my own. Thankfully, I've taken well to the North and my own good fortune has brought me south again to Arx, but I can't help remembering that he didn't protest my being shipped off to ice, snow, and uncertainty. I mean to forgive him, really I do. Eventually. Maybe.

Relationship Note on Niccolo

So maybe the meeting wasn't particularly by chance alone, but it isn't like I hadn't worked for it. I'd followed him for awhile after all, slyly, if I do say so myself. Next time I'll have to use someone a little more experienced for the role of an extra though. He's ideal for a patron. That level of protection and backing is exactly what I needed. I can flourish under this. If I can keep it.
