Relationship Note on Archeron

Lord Archeron,

It is true, I grew angry to see someone new-come to Arx repeating arguments made last year. I read his white and then wrote one in haste and anger.

It was my thought last year that followers of Gild could go on missions to help Houses who have no experience in running demesnes without thralls teach the ways of people who have such experience. In my anger I framed that in the worst possible way to Lord Alecstazi. I give apology. My passion overcame me.

I have materially supported traditionalist houses in these times because it is these lands that face the greatest challenge. These times make strange agreements. You can see that it is a wise thing that I have left the diplomacy to others in my efforts.

Relationship Note on Alecstazi

Look to your vassals who have freed their slaves and not starved. They prove you wrong.

Read the whites of slavers who wringed their hands last year when presented with Brass's challenge. There you will find discussions of justice.

If your stewards do not know how to manage your lands, beg for aid from people who are stewards of free people.

Relationship Note on Preston

Sir Preston,

In your journal of 3/25/1011 (OOC: June 6, 2019) you write about choice and questions. I passionately agree with you when you say, "Choice is not something to be taken or discarded simply", but I disagree on other things you say.

I feel that questions made in good faith can be shared with others without fomenting discord. It is questions made in poor faith that do so. I have to ask questions of others sometimes because I do not have the wisdom within myself to reach an answer based only on introspection.

Emissary Zulana gave a talk on writs recently, and I am mulling over all of the questions I have. Over time I may begin to ask questions of others.

Relationship Note on Raimon

Raimon, in your white you write that a warrior is someone who is prepared to kill and die for an idea.

I have thought of three challenges I face in understanding whether someone meets your criteria. I feel a Godsworn may have less challenges than I do.

Firstly, the knowledge of what ideas even _are_ is difficult. I recently spoke to someone who led me through the the complexities of duty and loyalty and the acts of obedience that follow from those ideas. The acts may be the same, yet the ideals behind those acts will be different. As I began to imagine what act would fall under what idea, I realized how little I understand of the concepts of Limerance.

Secondly, discerning the motivations of a person is difficult without the help of the gods.

Thirdly, making a life or death decision that requires the knowledge and the insight to know which ideal takes priority is difficult, and making that decision in the heat of a moment is difficult.

I am a veteran of the Gyre War and lost many people at Setarco. The Academy of War has meeting areas where we can re-enact those wars in miniature. I have relieved that time over and over working through every decision in that war with my compatriots as we slowly develop military doctrines and the strategic and tactical decisions that follow from them. Some decisions have us kill enemies, some decisions have us sacrifice our own people. I claim to you that knowing which ideal in any one moment is not easy.

I will not be able to judge whether myself or anyone is a warrior by your criteria until I have the years to grow insights and prove those insights time and time again when faced with decisions of life and death.

I hope until then to treat myself and others with respect from the humbleness of our ignorance. Unless someone is an absolute shite who violates some law. In the which case I will judge them greatly and perhaps will have to do so out of duty to an ideal despite wishing no good will towards shites.

If anyone asks what qualities absolute shites have, I confess that I have no oyster jobbing clue.

Relationship Note on Raimon

In your journals you reply to Harlex with "I do not begrudge how people choose to spend their time. But there is a difference between being a warrior and knowing how to use a weapon."

By your words I take it that you hold those who are adept in the arts of combat to ideals that some do not meet. What are the ideals to which you hold warriors? Do you measure the battle adept by the ideals of those in your lands? I aim to understand the ideals of all lands so that I can fit my demesne into the tapestry hanging in the Great Cathedral.

And now I will speak on knighthood. For when you said this about warriors it was knighthood my thoughts turned to. The Order of East Light was born out of many ideals, one of which I've heard was a mission to spread knightly values to your lands. When you said that not all who fight are warriors, I immediately thought of the duties and loyalties that knights have versus those who have not taken that path.

It is not for everyone to take the path of Knighthood. I have not spoken to many in that Order to understand truly their ideals, but I judge their goals worthy enough to grant them beneficial access to my ports. Yet I hesitate to approach any for joining this order because I worry that by seeking to follow the tenants of knighthood because part of those require a declaration of loyalty to just one person. Shall I place my hands in the moral judgement of but one person?

I feel a loyalty to my people. I would call it love. I feel a very strong loyalty to protection. That is a different type of love. Would such a love for that concept be enough for me to trust in the judgement of another and perhaps love that trust enough for me to hold to the duty of a knight? This is something I have thought on for many months since discovering that order.

My skill at combat is poor or perhaps mediocre. My skill at at navigating danger is as good as those of us who are not Prince Cerdic, yet I am no knight. Would you deem me a warrior once my skill at war is as good as any in Arvum, would I be one then?

I do not ask these questions with any rancor or frivolity. I know not what pricked you to post to the whites. I ask these things so that we honor Vellichor and share the ideals of our time with our descendants. They will hold us to that Eastern Light and question why we have made the choices we did. They will see what dedication it takes to hone worthy blades to defeat the darkness. If it ever come time for war I want my children and my children's children to know what it takes to fight the darkness.

Let us tell them.

I enjoyed the Salon hosted by Marquis Hadrian Mazetti on charity. Indeed, I often enjoy the salons yet remain quiet so that I can hear what others will say.

The Marquis has done well in his work with ARRG. Some of the discussion turned to the matter of oversight on charitable organizations. The Marguis shared that he “considered it of vital importance to have someone who had lived the life of a refugee, to be a representative of it". That one was Jyri Tersk, now Lord Jyri Whitehawk. Credit was given to the Marquis for his foresight.

Vincenzo set forth the idea to collaborate on a work to make it easy for all charities to follow best practices for governance and oversight.

I find this to be compelling, for there was given an example of one who stole money intended for a charity, but I am also filled with concern. As a leader I am well aware of the abuses that come from micromanagement. One failure mode of more bureaucracy is micromanagement.

I did not wish to remain vague about such things, so I set forth an example during the Salon of the charitable work we do in Pearlspire and gave a scenario whereby one who is ignorant could fuck things up greatly due to ignorance and suspicion. I will set it forth here as well.

House seliki and her people do much to integrate former thralls into the economy of Pearlspire. If any wish to learn fishing and oystering, we work with the communities to have them become productive members of those communities. It so happens that I am an expert in the ways of those who sail, but for this example, I wish all to consider a case where an ignoramus with a bias to suspect misappropriation of resources is put in charge of efforts to incorporate new serfs into our fishing communities.

One who does not have the lived experience of fishing nor trust in the lived experiences of those who do may find it inscrutable that fisherfolk spend time and resources collecting animal fat and pitch rather than fishing lines and nets for the latter are more obviously involved with fishing to anyone, even to those with little experience.

And thus… The choices of such a leader as I describe who is put over the fisherfolk may have then working with befouled hulls due to the lack of pitch and other materials used in the coating of hulls. As such materials may be deemed as irrelevant to the so-called mission of the charity.

Any contracts designed for charitable organizations should be designed with much input from insightful leaders. I look forward to learning what may come from the seeds set forth by Vincenzo and the others who gathered at this Salon.

Relationship Note on Vanora

My thanks for your recommendations on the discussion here in the whites, Duchess Vanora. Indeed, I was hoping for more specifics. For, I am sure I could fill everyone's head with specific books on the topic of military doctrine or share my personal experiences in learning the ways of the sea. I know these things. I also know my people. Before I knew of the complexity of the world /beyond/ the mundane complexities of economy or trade the gaps in my knowledge were clear to me.

Now? I have so many more things to factor into the future. So many more factors into alliances with houses beyond some economic compatibility or advantage in such normal matters such as building fleets for mutual defenses or sailing out to find new trade routes with foreign kingdoms.

My tutors praised my intelligence, do not think I am an idiot who will come away from a conversation satisfied with vague answers. I seek discourse. I do not get it in bars. I will seek it in the whites. It was not too long ago that people exchanged thoughts on the matter of thralldrom in the whites. I learned much from that. I learned much from talk on justice.

Those in the future will gain insight into these things. You all know this for all the research you do where you only find scraps of insight. Do you want your experiences and insight to be lost to future generations? I think not. Write.

Relationship Note on Cambria

In your white you write, "It is important to know ones history. It is equally important to know political philosophy. Last, but certainly not least, one should make certain to understand human nature."

How did you learn these things? Before moving to Arx and gaining an understanding how different the world is than I what I grew up with I did not have as much desire as I have now for a nuanced understanding of the political vicissitudes required to ensure the stability of the Compact so that the world doesn't get completely fucked and no longer exist.... or become an dire abyssal-scape. you, know -- like what happened in the Suthryn Wastes or Pyre. I mean, what /was/ up what all that. We don't want that to happen here. Or to the entirety of existence. that. There are so many alliances I /think/ we should forge. Like, let's shove some vaguely hostile but necessary people together? Do we need that.

Could you recommend some books? I'll figure all of this out post haste. I just need some good books to read. Maybe even some good conversation, but it's hard to get a word in edgewise sometimes. seems like most of the time the conversations go off the rails and I'm left with frustrations and a vague sense of dread at the fate of the world. I'm sure this happens to most everyone. I often find everyone drinking in bars or trying to lose themselves in haze. maybe that's why.

Sometimes the world just sucks and the joy of friends and their art is some ineffable thing that makes it all worthwhile.

First, I want to thank everyone for still existing. It is highly unlikely that my extreme cross-referencing posed any existential threat, but one can never be certain. I'm glad we are all still here. Aren't you? (If you are not, please write to the master of questions with your answer.)

Recently the society of explorers restricted their library to people of higher rank than I am. I've been working on getting everything I know about the regions of the world organized in one place, and I used many references from the society shelves before that happened. It was rather alarming because I did not know if I had misused them. I spoke with the Pathfinder, and my notes are harmless.

I'm compiling dossiers on all of the lands of the world. I'd love to be able to go on expeditions around the world. I have scant notes based on what scraps of information I get from things like reports on the Assembly of Peers. In the reports I am struck by how many books the emissary from Cardia said they could send. Was it hyperbole when he mentioned upwards of twelve thousand volumes comprising the Codex of Cardian Law? He said it would take a month for volumes one through nine hundred or so to reach us by caravel, but that the rest would take longer for all the time it would take for scribes to copy them. I do not know how legal systems work. Maybe some small part of their law is referenced frequently and hence they keep more copies of those volumes to hand?

Relationship Note on Vitalis

I had trouble searching through some matter and would have spent an entire day at a least had not Lord Vitalis Mazetti explained some confusion I had due to a misunderstanding of 'scale'. In attempting to compare the means by which people of Cardia record scale in maps, I ended up spending some hours reading an unrelated treatise on how to clean tools. Lord Vitalis pointed out that I had followed the wrong reference and picked up this book due to the wrong 'scale' vis. scaling of teakettles.

I comment Lord Vitalis for teaching me more about language than I knew before.

Eina has had to remind me more than a few times lately how uptight people are in Arx. It's the Saikland Green news. Everytime I see someone who was involved in that effort I am overcome. She has had luck intercepting at least two hugs so far. Maybe more.

People find me odd, but as someone whose house holds stewardship over a coast, the pollution strongly distressed me. If you wish to understand: think if you had to take food in poisoned waters? And life is more than food. think of not being able to play along the beaches. And what of all the marvelous creatures?

If you are not touched, then consider the inefficiencies of your vassals who had to work in such tainted areas.

Future Scholars:

Saikland Greens was polluted in the year 1005 and after all these years it is finally cleaned.

We don't have as much bowing and scraping in Pearlspire as people do here in Arx.

Except oysters. We scrape oysters.

I'm making a point to visit more shrines these days. It's easy to take comfort in Mangata's shrine, but life is complicated. Without irritations we wouldn't have pearls.

I first picked Limerance's shrine because I was least comfortable there in ways that are legible to me. I love my people and my family. I want stability for them. There's a lot of limerance in the bonds we all make together. We tie ropes to lash down cargo in storms. We win them to safe harbor where there family waits, and people who can repair ships.

When my mother died, my father was there for us. My grandmother, my yaya. I was there for my brother, he for me. Our cousin was a comfort.

I will not leave my family without comfort if I get lost at see or if some illness take me. I shall form some bond with another who will swear loyalty to my people. We will have children, who will have many cousins -- I have reminded my brother how much of a joy it was to grow up with Kalani, so he is on task for that. I'm not leaving my children in the care of a nanny -- yes, those of you who cared for me a child, many of you were dear, do not doubt that. but I want children to have parents and to learn from us all the possibilities available in their lives. My mother and father were not mirror souls. We all grew up together. I can see how young they were, then.

So it is Limerance I struggled with. Which ropes to use. Which knots. How much freedom I have. This is a very human thing.

The Shrine of the Thirteenth? It is the least comfortable in ways that are inscrutable to me. I visit it and feel I am being watched. My skin crawls. I see many reflections. It is good to endure these things and understand what makes me uneasy. I am become more brave. That's just a coat maybe, to wear in that place. Once I am brave? I will be more free to consider all of the corridors and what they mean. All of the different angles.

I thank everyone who has talked with me in these places.

Any who threaten the compact threaten my people and my family. Know this. I will visit Mangata's shrine and beg her to end you should you fray these knots. And I will take comfort in leading people who will end you.

Relationship Note on Venturo

Let it be known that the rumors of his story telling abilities and his prowess with brewing are all true. This man served samples of his most fine ciders accompanied by a harrowing tale that gave one the same pin pricks as did the heat of the spice built from up after many sips. I was called away after only sampling two vintages. I hope to return to sample more.

I recommend buying cider from this brewery. For, as my family says, there is joy in cider.
