I know that this may appear casually stubborn, but it is with great reflection that I write:

I will not, ever, apologize for posing a thesis.

Notwithstanding the sheer lunacy of not being able to open an investigation to learn by asserting a conclusion to observations, a great many scholars live and die with their words unliked and unvalued only for us to find that, after death, they were right. Walking back because people are upset about your findings is the mark of a cowardly scientist.

I will say, I am no trained philosopher. And careful observation of the shavs around our lands is probably due; I, perhaps mistakenly, believed the prodigals were close enough. It seems they too have been marred by our over civilized world and perhaps also need a return to nature.

Relationship Note on Dante

Hm. As you say, Lord Dante - perhaps I should venture further, for it seems the PRODIGAL who lives here has been corrupted by Compact manners and thus does not, in fact, embrace the ideals of their lost brethren.

As to the people of Whitefrost, they'll be --fine--.

There were so many responses, though I admittedly find some of them weird: I'm saying that the prodigal has it RIGHT. I'll be honest, I thought the pushback would be from men and women of the Compact shocked to hear that the morals of the prodigal are superior to their own.

Perhaps the prodigals replying have gone too deep into our culture and lost their nature-loving ways. Alas.

I should probably find ACTUAL shavs to observe, not corrupted ones.

Log:

I have a new interest! I suppose it is more sociological than straight, hard science, but after careful observation of several of the so called "Prodigal" men and women of Arx and summations based therein on the shavs from which they come, I have some reflections.

It seems to me that these unmannered savages are, in fact, living in a closer state of nature. And to me, these people are far superior to the duplicitous nature of the men and women of high culture in Arx. They are honest, simple, in touch with their truths, forthright, and without the problem of 'civilization'.

We are all born with curiosity, with a barefaced honest wonder of the world. I have been lucky: House Leary encourages the cultivation of knowledge and so, I have never lost it. But that makes me an oddity. Look at our nobility here: how many utensils do we even need to eat a pear? WHY do we need utensils to eat a pear?

I am being slightly hyperbolic, but my thesis is the same: we have over "cultured" ourselves. We embrace fakery and deceit in our courts whereas our free brothers and sisters bear none.

Our natural selves need no taming; civilization has gone too far and our manners are the problem. Our manners are nothing but false virtue, designed to disguise selfish centered vanity. We should throw off the bonds of etiquette and return to our more base frankness.

Are you a prodigal here, now? Might I observe you? interview you? I welcome messages on this topic, for I'm sure many have a lot to say.

Starting work with Ashur (!) on this new project for Cady. And the House, I guess! So far we've set each other on fire twice but now I have a fancy new lab coat from Princess Tikva. I love it.

It stuns me that the Compact has any ...moral gray area on the matter of slavery. It makes my stomach turn. It is bad. Up and down. No experiment necessary.

WHOA. Or should I say, WHOOSH! I may have accidentally created a crazy wind tunnel in the lab today using a system of pulleys and levers. Could this be a breakthrough?! Could I perhaps be on my way to making a FLYING MACHINE? The way I figure: birds emit tiny little puffs of air when they flap their wings. If I've managed to string up strings that pull big sheets of silk when I hoist them up and down that ALSO emit larger puffs of air... well. There must be something there! Maybe. I just hope I didn't forget to carry that seven ...

EUREKA!!! A BREAKTHROUGH!!! Arcadia's going to be so tickled PINK (ahahaha) when she gets my NEWEST CREATION. MWWAHHAHAH-- wait. Is that an evil laugh, scholar?

As my projects for House Leary continue, I've also been contacted by my Saik friend of old! I had forgotten how much I missed him, talking to him and finding experiments together. Even though we are only chatting via letter, I hope he comes to Arx so we can SCIENCE together. I can't wait to show him my lab! We're conspiring to build a few pieces but I can't decide: mechanical or chemical? Maybe we'll do both!

Cady also asked me about twinkling lights, which sounds ...wow! that sounds like both! That's it, that's just what he and I will work on together. A wedding gift for Cady.

Wow, glasses are expensive! Did you know glasses are expensive? I'd never had to concern myself with it before. I wonder how commoners make do? Perhaps I should start a Vision Fund, for all the commoners who cannot see.

I've lost my glasses.

They are, I think, SOMEWHERE in my room. But where, oh where...

I asked one of the Leary servants if he'd seen them in my room when he cleaned and he said 'my lady, I fear for my life to enter your room'. So I guess that's a no? And what is he afraid of? Nothing is even on fire! ...oh wait, no, I started an experiment with flammables. Okay. Fine. Fair.

Maybe I know someone VERY GOOD at finding lost glasses. Oh dear, oh dear. I won't be able to see my mutonium gestate. Oh dear.

I cannot and will not abide thralldom. Since joining the Stormbreak house, it has been a source of contention. I admit, in my desire to fit in with Thrax, I allowed men and women to serve me as thralls.

No more.

From this day forth, I will suffer no bonds of thralldom in my home and no man or woman who is enslaved will serve or work in my household.

I do not run the house of Stormbreak, I cannot do much, but I can ban the hideous practice from within my own circle and this I do. I am born of Grayson, of house Leary, and am proud to stand up and say no to thralldom.

Control: clear water.

Hypothesis: The fish will not survive in polluted water.

Observations: Water became cloudy and gray. Fish were hard to see. Were still alive at time of recording. Will check back in a few days.

Relationship Note on Mabelle

I met my husband's paramour tonight! I knew about HER but she evidently didn't know about ME which elicited quite an odd reaction from her. I don't know why she wouldn't know that Edward is married, but here we are.

This woman was rendered mute by my appearance and I do not understand her appeal. Happily, if Edward is distracted, I may form my own bonds to others or spend more time in my lab. So it's a net win.
