For all that I have written about love rarely playing a role when it comes to marriage among the Peerage - deep down, I think everybody wants to be 'the one' for somebody.

Relationship Note on Hadrian

It is both 'tap' and 'pat', and after the lengthy discussion we had about it, I do think you are now prepared to agree with me.

But if not? Then I am prepared to argue the matter further.

There is wisdom in the the old saying, "in wine there is truth." Alcohol impairs the ability to think strategically and puts one firmly in the moment, and therefore less capable of lying. In the same way that we shake hands to show that we are not carrying a weapon, having a few drinks is a form of mental disarmament that makes one more trusting as well as more worthy of trust.

One of the delights of my grandmother, that I recall from childhood, was to feed the cats that lord over the family tombs. I can still see in my mind's eye her walking very slowly, with the aid of a staff, preceded by a particular feline who would stop from time to time in order to make sure she was still following. He would never continue until she caught up.

I find this memory very comforting.

Growing up in Ostria, I discovered early on that I possess a love of history, and the history of my people. It was passed down to me through stories told by the older generations that covered all manner of things: love, tragedy, hardship, as well as the comedic and absurd. For example, my grandfather loved to tell a story about his grandfather's rivalry with another man. In particular, the 'villain' of the tale purchased a very large horse and loved to show it off at every opportunity, and my great-great grandfather wrote a scathing journal about the fellow and what he clearly lacked and was trying to make up for with the purchase of this horse. The tale itself, and the journal in particular, still amuse me to this day, but the thing is, all these wonderful stories came from people who were before my time. I never knew them physically, at yet, I came to know them all the same.

You see, our family, friends, even our community, they all leave impressions upon us - for good or ill.

It's up to you to decide what the stories of your life will weave into the tapestry of others, long after you're gone.

Well, here I am. Hiding under the bed, and from my own children, no less. Hadrian says he has hidden here before and that it always works, but I am not so sure. It’s difficult to write, since there is only one inkwell down here, and the Duke is terrible at sharing. Oh, he’ll deny it, but the proof is on the page. Everything I write is much lighter than his, and every time I attempt to dip my quill, he’s already beat me to it, dipping his in first and making it impossible for me to do the same, what with his big hand being in the way. He’s even looking right at me while doing so! He knows exactly what he’s doing, and I am going to make sure Vellichor and whomever else ever reads this does too.

One may ask why we are hiding from our own children. If you’re such a person, you either do not have children, or you’re abnormal.

I don’t know where they get it from - the questioning - but if I had to blame someone, I’d blame their father...or maybe the Mirrormask myself and the boys spoke with at the shrine last week. But mostly, I’d blame their father, and not myself at all. I’m their mother, responsible for nurturing them, and caring for them, and making certain they grow into adults capable of functioning in society, and I certainly don’t have any White Journals that encourage asking questions. That would be silly.

Of course, it’s not just the questions. Sometimes, you just want a little time to yourself. Or a little time to yourself and a certain other individual. See, we have come back to sharing. How are we supposed to teach our children the value of sharing when someone under this bed is hogging the ink? I, on the other hand, am a selfless individual that shares...perhaps too much. Maybe it’s time for me to start hogging the ink, and the pillows, and blankets, and whatever else I can think of. Because I also need to teach my children the importance of looking after their own needs as well. You can’t give and give until there’s nothing left! Then what good are you to anybody?

I wonder if Hadrian has accounted for the height of our youngest, when compared to the height of the bed. I am fairly positive that Damianos would have to duck, and possibly Verus, but Soteris? I think we are probably right within his line of vision. I want to tell Hadrian this, but he looks so focused right now. Still, if we’re quick, we might just make it to the ho-

A famous Scholar once observed that there is a difference between statements about what is and statements about what ought to be. Put another way, there are things that are true based on observation like the movement of the stars, and then there are things that are true based upon a set of rules, like ethics or religion.

Despite the fact–value distinction, people tend to conflate factual truth with moral truth, especially in politics.

No matter how rational and logical the argument, it cannot overcome morality, but moral claims can easily overcome factual objections.

Thus, the cold reality of being correct can never overcome the warm satisfaction of being right.

Philosophy is very much a rational exercise in pursuit of truth. Wisdom is not the same thing as being clever or intelligent. It implies that someone has wise things to say about what matters most in life and lives according to those insights. Nor does wisdom mean knowing lots of "information," as information is available to us all, but that does not necessarily mean we will apply that information wisely.

Politics is about compromise. The opposing sides find some middle ground that they can accept or some combination of their proposals that prevent either side from feeling cheated by the other. Importantly, however, compromise should only be had when it is understood that both sides want what is best.

Of course, what is best and for whom is an entirely different matter.

Relationship Note on Cirroch

I admit that I was hesitant at first when I received a letter from Marquis Cirroch Sanna indicating he would be interested to meet and discuss the possibility of becoming my protege. I was hesitant because I had never before considered taking a fellow Peer for a protege. There is no good reason for this, of course. It is every bit as worthy, and as beneficial, to act as a patron to a fellow Peer.

It was part of the reason why I ultimately decided to become Marquis Sanna's patron. I sincerely believe that this partnership will prove to be of mutual good to us, and our Houses.
