I think - I think - I think...

... I think I will take a week and serve with the Silent Reflections. I need an object lesson.

It has been brought to the attention of the author of certain works that the pen name that one chose has an unfortunate correlation.

Rest assured, dear people of Arx, that no offenses were meant.

The author intends to find a new name - and suggestions will be considered.

[ From the polite propagandist, B. Mercier: ]

Six Ways to Make People Like Thee:

- Become genuinely intrest'd in other people. "You can make more cater-cousins in two months by being intrest'd in those folk, than in two years by making those folk intrest'd in thee.

- Rememb'r yond a person's name is, to yond person, the sweetest and most imp'rtant sound in any language. "the average person is more intrest'd in their own name than in all the other names in the world put togeth'r. We can make people feel extreme value and imp'rtance by remembering their name.

- Be a valorous hark'r. Encourage others to speak of themselves. The easiest way to become a valorous conv'rsationalist is to become a valorous hark'r. To be a valorous hark'r, we might not but actually care about what people has't to say. Many times people want not an entertaining conversation partner; those gents just want someone who is't shall hark to those folk.

- Talk in terms of the other person's interest. The royal road to a person's heart is to speak of the things that gent 'r the lady treasures most. If 't be true we talk to people about what those gents art interest'd in, those gents shall feel did value and value us in return.

- Make the other person feel important – and doth sincerely. We love to feel imp'rtant and so does’t ev'ryone else. People shall talk to us f'r hours if 't be true we allow those folk to speak of themselves. If 't be true we can make people feel important in a sinc're and appreciative way, then we shall win all the cater-cousins we couldst ev'r dream of.

- Finally, the most imp'rtant rule is these: do not be an ass.

I do, I do completely understand how our cousin Horatio set that fire. Goodness, thankfully I documented the careful combination of herbs, powders, and then I added this terrible smelling liquid and --

FWOOM.

I really do not think that is the noise the wooden trunk made when it went up in flames, but, it was close enough. Worse was the noise that Lisette made when she helped me snuff out the fire before it caught on anything else.

(No. No. I would rather not discuss my emotional reaction following the incident, scholar. I merely wanted to make the memory of my first alchemical experiment permanent. Yes - there were things in there that I - )

That is an awkward mouthful, yes. I might settle with Researcher.

It is truly a surreal experience when someone - someone of rather daunting status, yet, still maintaining a personable warmth and an air of mystery asks what you want to do -

And your thoughts fail you.

Within the same breath, you finally take the first step forward to become a Scholar.

[ The following letter has been added to the Archive in place of an entry. It is written in overly-meticulous script, blocky: ]

Dear Father and Mother,

It has been some time since I penned a letter, and even longer since I left the city to visit the Vale and more specifically, the Estate. I hope that you are both well, and keeping safe with the Guard that Lazarus sent over. Between us, I know that Lord Tobias is honorable - despite the betrayal of the former Lord Commander, Everard. It was a shrewd decision that Lazarus made, securing those forces, and I hope that you will understand why considering our enemies and the devastation that follows in their wake.

Certainly, you have been given news of the events as they unfolded at the most recent Assembly of Peers - so, I will avoid the reiteration of thoughts and opinions that are possibly best kept to myself (and out of this letter.) Otherwise, I know, that Father will send me a lengthy response and will refer to papers and texts that I should possibly read.

Also, please remind Father that he should remain seated for the following: yes, I have accepted new employment. I have gained so much more momentum beyond those days of that pianoforte performance that impressed the Lady Alarys so - (as I told Silas moments after I sent in my resignation) - my ambitions have outgrown the position. I have a patron, now, and the freedom to pursue my own interests. I know that you both wanted more for me, a higher place in society, and I understood your reasons for doing so were for the betterment of our family.

Ultimately, everything is for the advancement for the family. There are times, in fits of pique, that I utterly resent you for it. Other times, when my heart swells with so much emotion that I could burst from gratitude for it. I suppose that is the strange and complicated relationship between a child and their parents. Moving forward, I take steps toward my advancement - for which I hope you will not begrudge me for. I shall always strive to have you be proud of me in word and deed.

(There is more, Mother, but I will detail the more personal news to you in another letter.)

Of course, despite all threats, I am hopeful that the season will be a fruitful one for us. I will organize to make a visit in the early autumn to assist with the harvest and with the seasonal accounts.

Always, your youngest,

Beth

I can assure that if Lazarus was toasting - I would have kicked him in the shin for it.

(He wasn't.)

She was very opinionated, very talented - and obviously - very loved by her family. I would never have been able to afford one of her dresses, ever. She gifted me one for my frank commentary.

One can only wish to keep their fire at such an age.

To the Lower, to the Upper, to the servant and the merchant. To the general populace of Arx that lack a title before their name:

Allow them to bicker. We must organize ourselves.

"... I don't believe current events is the business of those in power alone as it affects us all." Well-spoken words by a knight-scholar of Vellichor.

It will affect *all* of us. In every tier. A certain level of transparency is needed - among the social classes, among the ranks. We need to unify, stand as one city and one Compact if we are ever to understand the situation we are facing. We need to be aware of all factors, all consequences in order to cast decisions like stones upon the backs of anyone.

Highborn or lowborn alike.

Ask questions. Seek answers. Find the Corruption where it hides in the Dark and cast Light upon it. Share what you learn about it with others. No questions are useless when all that we considered myth or fiction is now made real. The only fear is in the unknown, the ignorance, the unwillingness to ask and search and learn.

We need to insist on the truth if we are to make any decisions on our future.

[ From the uncertain desk of B. Mercier: ]

* Praise for the Prince of Redrain who stands beside his ideals. We need ask more questions and learn if the consequences are truth. We are basing much of this upon a people that are contrary and cruel for humor and sport -- something may be missing.

* Shame the Prince of Thrax that continues to use Thralls like pawns upon a chessboard.

* Although my thoughts are concerning the Teind are complicated, which I am still picking apart and will detail in the Black Reflections, I will say that those that stood up - willingly - as volunteers deserve a measure of respect.

* For the one that renounced, I do not blame your ill-timing at all. Your reasons are your own. Live well. Thank you for the kindness you extended to my friend - no matter what name she chooses to call herself. She (and you) are still steadfast and loyal and should always act as heart and head dictate.

How to Gain Allies and Hold Sway over Citizenry, Chapter One:

Criticize not, condemn, 'r complain. Individuals do not care admit fault. At which hour people are criticized 'r humiliated, those gents rarely react well an' shall oft turn defensive and resent their critic. To deal with people well, we wilt never criticize, condemn 'r protest because 'twill never result in th' comportment we desire.

Give honest an' true appreciation. Appreciation is one of the' most powerful tools in the world. People shall rarely work at their greatest potential under criticism, however honest appreciation endues out their most wondrous. Appreciation, though, is not simple flattery. One must offer true, meaningful an' earnest praise.

Arouse in a person an eager want. To receive what we want from another person, we will forget our own perspective an' commence to perceive all from th' eyes of others. At which hour we can combine our desires with their want, those individuals become eager to work with us an' we can mutually achieve our objectives.
