So now that I definitely know who this "Mystery Guest" is, I have to ask:

Why the fuck? Just. _Why_ the _fuck_?

You're right! If Everard Telmar hadn't made his stupid ass bet using the heirloom weapon of his house as the Sword of the Telmarch, then there wouldn't be a big todo about it now. Glad you get it!

That was sarcastic, by the way.

He may very well give them a choice for one very good reason: the chains you choose to bind yourself in are far stronger than the chains someone forces on you. And I imagine the Traitor wants his chains to be very, _very_ tight.

I didn't know Oliver too well. I'm not leading the investigation into his murder, but when I saw noble houses start to publicly pledge funds to buy thrall debts in Oliver's name, I thought -- hey. There's something real I can do. There's something I _know_ how to do, something real and tangible. I can turn money into freedom.

I'm not the Archlector of Skald anymore, of course, but I do have the honor of being a Liberator of Skald again, and so I volunteered my services as a Disciple of the Faith. The one stipulation that Dame Morrigan and Guildmaster Joscelin gave me was this: that it be loud. That it be _public_. So that's what it's going to be. Freedom is going to be a godsdamn celebration for Oliver, like his family wants.

So if you want to send donations, send them. But also: if you want to help make this loud? Make this public? Throw in support other than silver? Let me know. We're going to make some noise.

I gave up a lot when I left the ranks of the Godsworn, even if I've since been allowed to return to the discipleship I first began in -- that I founded and grew. One of the things that was hardest for me to keep away from was the fight against thralldom.

I didn't know Oliver Arterius particularly. I do know Joscelin, who I'm left heartbroken for.

And I'm left aching with this knowledge: when you tell the world that certain people are less than, you give the world permission to treat them that way. The wounds of thralldom aren't just the years or lifetimes taken from those enslaved; they're also how it teaches people that it's okay to take those things. Until those people get angry and offended when those who have been affected by thralldom state they deserve to be treated as people.

When you strip people of humanity, others stop treating them like they're human beings.

Fuck this. I'm so sorry, Josie.

All these people talking about how you can't make a bet with someone else's money, with someone else's purse...

I mean, for one thing, I've seen _plenty_ of stupid nobles gambling away money they don't really have and leaving their house on the hook for it. Are you kidding? Have you never heard of inheriting someone's debt, either? Do you not realize this is a thing that happens _every day_?

For another thing, this wasn't just somebody betting somebody else's whatever. This was a person entrusted with the care and safekeeping of the family's honor: their heirloom weapon. It belongs to the house, but Everard Telmar was _entrusted_ with it. The idea that he had the same relationship with this sword as he might have with some random stranger's coin purse is ridiculous, and, frankly, it makes the entire position of a House Sword to be meaningless. It makes them all just random people who are just holding onto somebody's sword for a minute instead of actual chosen holders of a house's honor. And when the person you choose to hold your honor fails, your house fails. Your honor fails. And you are now responsible for what they've done in your name.

But of course, the real problem is the uppity commoner who's been put off and rebuffed for years in hopes that she'll keep quiet. Can't have that.

You're right. When Bliss Whisper was an unknown to the Compact without popularity and support, back when the events in question happened, she was disregarded and ignored by the house's leadership. Because that's generally what happens to commoners who end up abused by the peerage.

That's not a sign of anything right or _just_, though.

Whether or not Everard Telmar had the right to gamble away the heirloom weapon of his house, he gave his word of honor in front of an entire party of witnesses while holding the position of _defending_ that house's honor. (And, as I'm aware, House Telmar denied responsibility for _years_ before the matter came out now.) A noble house is responsible for the oaths made by its members, _especially_ ones that it's given such a position of honor and responsibility to. And I think the talk coming out of the Valardin Ward has made it pretty clear how Oathlanders generally feel about oaths, whether or not they're convenient. (I mean, the talk in the Lyceum Ward is pretty much just as indicative.)

Relationship Note on Gerard

Yeah, I knew some fucker was going to try this. Except mine was a vow, and I submitted myself to the judgment and penance of the Faith. Try again.

House Telmar doesn't get to simply wave away responsibility because we all know now that Everard was an honorless traitor. They should have publicly condemned Everard as soon as they heard about what he did to Bliss, not hold it as a potential condition of some negotiation. That is the very least they could have done, without any further condition.

It wasn't Everard's right to bet away House Telmar's heirloom weapon? Damn right it wasn't, but sometimes we have to live with consequences of the people who betray us. The mess Everard left behind is House Telmar's to clean up by right. The oaths he made as the _representative of House Telmar's honor_ are theirs to keep. Whether they wish they were or not.
