Relationship Note on Victus

I feel like I am almost honor-bound to forge sea serpent hairpins for Princess Astrid. If I've not gone to the Wheel, and Your Grace still trusts such work to me, I would consider myself a very lucky smith to be asked to forge such a thing for her when she's ready. Thank you again for your humbling regard for my work.

I am beyond humbled and honored by such truly generous words that my own vocabulary somewhat fails. It was a privilege to have been asked to forge that blade and I hope she truly will serve you well. As well, I would be quite happy to teach those seeking a new trade the skills of smithing. The Gods know I started out just fixing horseshoes and plows before ever managing Oathlands steel, a method I'd certainly share my knowledge of as well.

Relationship Note on Victus

I said they would never do it, because none of them would ever be willing to make the sacrifices it would require. I said it repeatedly. I believe I wrote it down here, so I'll write this here as well:

I was wrong. I was wrong in the best possible way it is to be wrong. I had no faith in House Thrax, and no faith even in the leaders who had made gestures toward at least easing thralldom. At best, I thought, children were being freed--without their parents, without their families--and being raised in unfamiliar households. At best this was accomplished by paying the people who had either enslaved them in the first place, or encouraged their enslavement by buying their debt. At best, an entire generation of children would be cut loose from everything and everyone they'd known, to save them from a lifetime of slavery. But not their parents. Not their grandparents. Not their brothers and sisters and cousins who were too old to raise the kind of sympathy they could. Just them. At best, they and they alone would be free.

Seven years is a long, painfully long time. Children will grow up in seven years. Men and women will die or be killed in seven years. Older thralls may not have seven years left in them. But seven years is not a generation. It's not a century. It doesn't condemn every current thrall to die in thralldom for the sake of the future and the comfort of their owners.

I apologize for underestimating you. And me and mine, many of whom are former thralls themselves, will stand with you in this.

I do not envy him as he has been put into a situation which is untenable. There are not real right choices despite what others in power believe. All I can do is support him as best as I can.

I read a book once that had writings about a Eurusi weapon called a 'katar'. It's not a glove, but rather a blade that you hold and use like you were punching someone. It seems perhaps a more practical idea.

Now I am thinking you could commission variations on this idea of gauntlets with knives. For example, one with small hooks on the palm and fingers for being able to boulder or to climb cliff faces that have been sprayed by the sea.

If someone does make these very dangerous sounding gauntlets - please keep in mind that the Mercies are always available when (not if) they are needed.

Be careful scratching your nose (Or whatever else might itch.. ahem).

We can be found at the House of Solace. I'll have a bed ready!

I'm not a fan of blades in gloves for reasons already expressed. Reinforce areas of the glove with harder, less flexible material so that you turn your hand into a bludgeoning weapon. If you want to get nastier have barbs lined over the knuckles so you're able to rip and tear as you punch.

The style of swordsmanship I use employs my free hand, the clawed ends of the gauntlet, as a means of defense and offense.

Its effective. You just have to have the gauntlet designed in a certain fashion.

As a brawler, weaponsmith and occasional armorsmith, I almost want to attempt knifed gauntlets. I did a rather exquisite fan with daggers, in fact, not that long ago. The problem with gloves may be that you are always walking around dagger out, so to speak, while wearing such things. I mean, I guess you could also have some special gloves made that would work like a sheath? I can't imagine your fingers would be useful at all that way though. The Gods know I've often wondered about a diamondplate this or that for those of us only schooled in the sweet science. Maybe something to ponder more seriously.

Knives on a gauntlet?

This really does sound like a job that you should tackle with Baron Audric de Lire. Fixing knives to a glove really sounds like something the good Captain-General probably did a decade ago. Or yesterday.

I think I smell the next big collaboration of 1010 AR!

Oh, it's been tried, but the issue is one of leverage and wrist positioning. As impressive as it seems in our imagination, flesh and bone are far tougher than we realized and with the blades coming out over the back of your hand it means sometimes there is no good way for your hand to bend to absorb impact. At best you will continuously do incremental damage to your fingers and if you strike there is a very real danger of dislocating your wrist in one go.

Prince Victus

Myself, I feel that the added weight to a gauntlet would interfere with sword play as well as potentially getting in the way. Perhaps as a primary weapon for a brawler could suffice. Might I suggest instead adding points to the gauntlet instead, concentrating the force of the blow in the same way that a flanged mace does

If the little ones are making you hungry for lamb, I'd be glad to send Marie over with some garlic, lemons and olive oil. This is the proper season for butchering yearling sheep. Just don't try to share with the goats, we do not want to give them a taste for flesh.
