Relationship Note on Cassius

Cassius is a stalwart Knight of Solace, with more strength than I think he gives himself credit for. I hope I can, in some small way, ease the burden he carries with him.

I had decided to take this week off, for the most part. It's not that I don't still work--I have meetings, we talk, we try to fix things, more meetings, etcetera. But no asking for support, no real *pushing*, because--well--the project I'd been working on since the Assembly was completed; I finished the last volume (for now at least, though undoubtedly, there shall be more); etc. Yet I still find myself trying. I met with Isolde yesterday--she seemed, of all things, lonely; especially with Esera missing. All I need is a target, and we'll get her back--but that's a meaningless comfort, I think. She follows the Thirteenth. In fact, she's the Thirteenth's most public and obvious follower. Yet she's estranged, she's pushed out. I recall a notice early on as to why--an educational bit in the Shrine she gave that was pretty out there. Looking back on it I'm not sure if she was altogether wrong.

Elves. They're certainly beautiful, I'll give them that, but their diplomacy is for shit. As I said to Princess Donella Thrax, even when Valardin/Thrax relations were at their worst, neither side were as casually dismissive of the other as the Nox'alfar are of us within the first minute of meeting us. To them, we are children--which *MIGHT* make sense from their immortal opinion, except for the fact that if we "children" were as useless as they would like us to be, they wouldn't be allied with us, now would they? I find it vexing, but I will maintain my peace. At least until I get a bow like that one elf's, at which point perhaps I will speak up a bit louder for myself. When you don't need something from someone, it becomes easier to talk shit to them and these people desperately need some shit talked to them.

Relationship Note on Alistair

Having met Inquisitor Alistair, I was convinced of two things almost immediately. First, I doubt the man has laughed at any point in the last year, at least. He is impurturbable. Second, he is utterly committed to the good of the realm. I do not believe he is harsh, but I am often told that I have much too much trust in people. That being said...if I have to deal with any Inquisitors, he would be my choice.

Relationship Note on Dawn

I've been thinking about Dawn more and more lately. It's impolitic to say that one noble is better than another, or one commoner is better than a noble, because who are we to judge? Sentinel and Limerance will make that call when the time comes. Yet whatever I might feel about the necessity of the Teind, no one can doubt that Dawn is making her sacrifice out of loyalty, love, and duty to all of the people. Those who voted for her suggestion did not (with one notable exception in Niccolo) also volunteer to sacrifice as necessary. People think that we Valardin are all of a stripe, and no doubt some will blame Edain for his vote against, or me because I spoke against it, thinking it a chink in the Valardin's reputation for loyalty. What they do not understand, I think, is that being critical, or giving honest opinions, to a ruler is not the same thing as disloyalty--in fact, I feel it is a duty. Those who would blow smoke up ruler's ass to their face about how wise they are yet speak negatively about them in private bacause of what is "proper etiquette" are hardly paragons of loyalty.

Relationship Note on Deva

Princess Deva Redrain is an archer and a lady of uncommon beauty; a devilish combination. She's also got a sharp, sharp mind. I forsee a very lengthy friendship with the Voice of Redrain.

Relationship Note on Valencia

Valencia is much more withdrawn than I expected amongst her family! Yet still enchanting. Some friction between her and her cousin Deva; I certainly hope I can help them get along better, if I can...especially since I'd like to spend more time with both of them.

I find myself becoming quite attracted to several different ladies in this city. I wonder how long it will take Edain to bring up the topic of marriage with me; I'd prefer for any future seductions on my part to have a serious exploration of an end-goal in mind instead of a dalliance. Not that I have anything against dalliances. Hardly so; I would marry all three of them, were it up to me alone--and of course, if I could convince them that such an arrangement would be enjoyable. Nor would I object to their taking other partners. This is not the usual means by which these things go, but in my time in the villages and towns of Arvum I have found that there are many ways that people look at love. Of them all, my favorite is the one where the lovers are bound in love to one another--but are not restricted from finding love with others, as well, in honest and open companionship; my honor prevents me from adultery and cheating, but my heart is open to many. Though I doubt I will find such a thing in my lifetime. Too many believe that there is only one bond to be had, and grow jealous. We shall see.

Relationship Note on Cassius

And then there were two of us, and soon there will be more, and together, we will stem the tide of darkness. In this I pledge my faith and sacred honor.

Last night was the Assembly. It was chaotic, difficult, and troublesome. I don't agree with the rush to judgment on the Teind and blood sacrifice but by the same token I don't condemn it entirely out of hand. It clearly has some importance to the Nox'alfar, and they clearly have valuable things to trade to fight our fight with.

I just wonder at other options. Given what I experienced with Gloria, as I told the Assembly (albeit after the vote), it is clear our Gods can help--the holy water and fire were mentioned. Many smart people have clearly done research into this, and I wonder if it is the forgetfulness of our past that leads them to cling immediately to solutions offered by mystical elves--because that knowledge is at hand, and seems real--that moves them to be so accepting of the solutions of debauched Elven nobility. I will redouble my efforts to protect all of Arvum as best I can, seeking what tools I can via the Faith and more mundane methods, and forming a fighting force if I can. Because political squabbling won't help right now.

Relationship Note on Edain

Edain was a knight-errant in the last two years of my travels; a proud man who loved boar hunting and falconry. We got along well enough on the road, and I hope it'll work out just as well now that he rules the family.

Relationship Note on Agnarr

The Housecarl of Redrain, who tends to ignore titles, is a blunt but pleasant man who was quite pleasant when met in the training center. Could he have a grudge against Anze? He did not seem terribly approving when we discussed the man, but Anze is gruff enough for it to just be a natural reaction.

Relationship Note on Alis

My cousin is quite pleasant, welcoming, decorous, and tactically skilled. Despite my newness to the city, she was more than kind to allow me to aid in planning the expedition against the Beast and, moreover, seemed to be genuinely interested and responsive to my ideas. More than that, she succeeded in the defeat of the creature with minimal casualties. I believe she will go a long way in helping Valardin grow stronger.

Relationship Note on Valencia

Ah, she's a bit of a minx, and apparently taken with me, but I've had enough flirtations thrown at me from ambitious noblewomen to know just how much -that- might be worth in the long run. Pleasantly forward, but undoubtedly manipulative. I'll keep an eye on her, and not get drawn too deeply into her web.
