Relationship Note on Shard

Thank you for the clarification!

I should amend, after a correspondence with Prince Niklas, that I do not personally have any knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the establishment of an embassy for Nefer'khat. I assumed such was done with the agreement of Prima Shard. If I am mistaken in that, I apologize for my presumtion. However, historical information from the writings of Prince Cerdic Valardin do suggest that the Primasen of the Griffon at one point may have offered its aid to us in the past, and may lend some historical weight of precedence for the establishment of relations with Nefer'khat. Whether there is any formal agreement now, however, I do not know.

The Khati, as far as I am aware, have not been seeking to undermine the Compact, nor have they issued any impossible ultimatums that I have seen. This much cannot be said for our guests from Cardia or the Undying Empire.

My assistant has brought me a transcript of the recent Assembly of Peers, and I must admit that I am concerned. An embassy should only be offered to the Compact's allies. Jadairal and Cardia have not proven to be our allies. They have given us unreasonable terms for their aid. They know that we will not give up our Faith, nor will we allow ourselves to be bound by Writ. Under such impossible terms, an alliance is impossible. The Nox'alfar and Nefer'khat have embassies because of their friendship with us. The Marin'alfar, too, count themselves among our allies, and and so this is why we enjoy the privilege of having Marquessa Sasha Sanna and Lady Mikani Crovane as ambassadors to the Marin'alfar, in addition to the future plans for a Marin'alfar embassy.

While I was happy to provide the opportunity for the Compact to learn more about these foreign powers, I think allowing them an embassy without any formal treaties or relations is premature. Let them first come to the table with more reasonable offers and show a genuine desire for friendship without impossible strings attached. Personally, I would very much enjoy one day the possibility of getting to know them better, but until such a time as they respect the sovereignty of the Compact, and our beliefs, I think it would be best to maintain a certain distance.

I have been asked by some if I plan to host further events, but I have decided that at this time, I will no longer be offering the hospitality of the Academy to these representatives. As a representative of the Faith, I cannot in good conscience do more at this time. Perhaps once our relations have proven to be 'waterproof' as the Marin'alfar would say, I will reconsider it. That level of trust will, and should, take time to build.

The Faith of the Pantheon exists to guide the faithful in the proper ways and means of honoring the Gods. While we may not be perfect, and even Godsworn have proven to be fallible, as Scholar Rinel has stated so eloquently, there is an understanding that the Pantheon and its ideals are the foundation upon which our Compact stands. Those of us who have dedicated our lives in service to the Gods have done so out of love for them, and for anyone to cast doubt upon this hurts my heart. While questions are a part of a Scholar's life, and as far as I am concerned, to be encouraged, there is a line that must be drawn somewhere, between questions of a Scholarly nature, and questions that are intended to challenge the very pillars which give our Compact strength. There are some things I wished to write about, after giving myself some distance from the events of the past week.

First, it is not okay to talk about, or even joke about, burning journals, be they white or black. To do so in my hearing is a certain way to be called into question. The lower levels of the Great Archive are off-limits to any save the Godsworn without my permission or that of the leaders of the Faith. The Black journals kept there are a sacred bond between us and the Gods. They are inviolate. They are to be treated with respect and reverence, and any talk of burning them, or otherwise harming them, is heresy. I will not hesitate to do what I think is right, in accordance with my vows, when it comes to protecting that which is my duty to protect. It is the duty of every Scholar who has taken vows in service to Vellichor.

Second, to write in a white journal that you would burn all the white journals is another thing that will call into question a person's integrity and their commitment to the Gods. Elisha has done this, and if any have missed it, one need only go back through his white journal entries to view this. If you find them tedious and difficult to read, just skip back to his relationship notes on His Majesty, King Alaric, dated 3/25/1011 AR and then roll your eyes down to the bottom of that entry. Whether it was meant to be literal, or only in metaphor, is irrelevant. Those words should not be written or spoken at all, and it disturbs me greatly to see this. I have been slow to act on this, because I was advised that we should give him a chance, that we should offer the opportunity to mend his ways, and to be guided and educated. I even met with him myself, to see if I could understand why everyone is so protective of him, to see if mercy would be warranted. Even I found him to be charming and endearing after a fashion, and there can be no doubt that he has a gift for the written word, even if he has some strange, contradictory and heretical views. But his name kept coming up, and as I became aware that he has been influencing others with his heresy, the time for coddling ended, and thus it became a time to act.

Third, in my correspondence with this young man, he indicated to me that he does not believe in truth, or accuracy. He does not believe that the Dominus is the voice of the Gods. He claimed, at first, that no one may speak for the Gods. In the same letter, he then asserted that he believes /he/ speaks for Aion. He implies that he knows better than the Dominus the will of the gods. He writes of things that he does not understand, and treads upon dangerous waters. Father Aureth's edict in excommunicating this young man is right, in my opinion, for he has shown himself to be incapable of being guided. Perhaps he has a rebellious streak in him, which craves to do the things that he is warned against repeatedly. He of course may make his own choices, for we are all given that right to choose by the grace of Skald's intervention. But the exercise of choice does not make one immune to consequence.

Excommunication is not done lightly. In this case, there are very good reasons for it. Those who call it into question may not have known the full facts of the situation, but I hope that I have been able to make them abundantly clear in this instance. Questions as to whether or not one should provide charity to the excommunicated, or do business with them, I leave to the Legates and to the officials of the Crown, and it seems to me Father Aureth answered that question very clearly. But Sir Preston, too, does have a point in that continued association with such a person may give the impression that you are in support of their heresy, so it is better to distance yourself, in my opinion. If you do choose to give them charity, surely Gild will smile upon your actions, but at the same time, be careful to ensure that you are not in any way coming to the defense of the heresies of the excommunicated. In this instance, I speak only for the Scholars of Vellichor, and those Godsworn and Disciples who are charged with protection of the Great Archive. To threaten harm upon the Great Archive and the knowledge therein, is heresy. This young man, and his friend Ras, are to be regarded with distrust, for both have indicated that they think it would be okay to harm the journals we Scholars are sworn to protect.

On a related note, I have heard a disturbing rumor is spreading that some people think it would be okay to harm black journals. I assure you, any attempts to burn journals will result in a swift and decisive response from the Knights of the Library and Godsworn who tend to those sacred journals, and who are sworn to guard knowledge. Bitter battles between the Knights of the Library, the Scholars of Vellichor, and those who would bring harm to the knowledge within the Archive have been fought over threats to the Archive in the past. Do not doubt our commitment to our vows. I will find the time to speak of these things in the future, because these rumors are very unsettling to me. As they should be to everyone.

Finally, some have asked me, if I have all this vast wealth of knowledge at my fingertips, why do I not simply share all of what I know with all of the Compact? The answer to this question is complicated and difficult to explain. But, the crux of it is that I don't have all the answers. Even some of things that I do know, I do not know the full story. Knowledge is what we strive and seek for, but when the story is incomplete, knowledge becomes dangerous, just like any weapon in the hands of a blindfolded fool. What I suspect may have happened with young Elisha, and young Ras, is that someone has shared some knowledge with this pair, and then they have taken it and run with it, and decided that they know some things without understanding the full picture. There are things that even I do not know or understand fully. In spite of what anyone thinks, the Archscholar is not omniscient. It is not for me to give you all of the answers, and while it is my job to be knowledgeable, it is not my place to consider myself all-knowing. It is for each and every one of us to seek, to learn, to grow. This is why I do not share all that I know, and why we should all be cautious around anyone who claims to have all the answers. No one does, save perhaps Vellichor himself.

The Storybook Soiree was more wonderful than I could have imagined. Thank you to all the people who entered a story for the competition. If you would like a copy of your story in the Great Archive, please let me know. I have copies of each, but wanted permission first. All of the stories were wonderful!

The winners of the competition:

1st Place: Hidden in the Stars by Juniper Whisper
2nd Place: The Lady and the Lute by Lady Willow Nightgold
Third Place Tie: Sednaya, Beloved of Mangata by Prince Alecstazi Thrax
When All Seemed Lost: The Story of Attaric and Tanae by Marquessa Reigna Keaton

I wanted to give a special praise to Guildmaster Josephine Arcuri. The prize for the costume contest was crafted in her shop, and written by Lady Monique. Josephine won the costume contest, but she then donated the grand prize to the Faith. It now sits on display in the Great Archive and anyone may view it. It is a fitting and beautiful tribute to the Compact, the histories of the ages, and to the Gods. Thank you again, Guildmaster Josephine, for this beautiful gift, on behalf of the Faith and the Scholars. It is my hope that it will always be treasured, and a gift to the entire Compact.

Lady Monique Greenmarch outdid herself. Every corner of the Academy main hall was transformed into a storybook wonderland through her inspiration, and through the work of Crafters. A special thank you to Delia Whisper and Guildmaster Josephine for their work on the beautiful displays as well. I've never seen anything quite like it. Each section was dedicated to one of the books submitted to the contest. Lady Monique worked tirelessly to bring those stories to life, to supply gifts for every guest, and to come up with a scavenger hunt. The prizes offered up for that were exquisite as well, guarded by Archlector Etienne. I managed to find all the books, and snagged myself a bottle of Granato wine, which I shall save for a special occasion. Thank you, as well to Sven for the special Blood and Gold brew that was provided especially for this event.

In all, it was a beautiful evening. I was able to wear a beautiful gown of my own design, though I was aided in its crafting in the shops of both Selene Whisper and Mistress Petal. It was a pleasure to assist with hosting, and offer up the Academy space for this tribute to the stories that we treasure. It is good to remember, when it seems the darkness of trouble is encroaching, that we have much to celebrate about ourselves and the Compact, and the Gods. I know that I, for one, will not soon forget this night and will hold it in my heart as a fond memory, as the weight of duty settles upon me once again tomorrow.

Relationship Note on Vanora

I wanted to take a moment to write about Duchess Vanora Grimhall after reading her recent journal entry. I do not know the details of her involvement with certain events, but I will certainly vouch for her steadfast piety. She has shown herself to be truly penitent, at least in my dealings with her. I applaud and support her efforts in building a school of theology at Grihem's Point.

We all make mistakes, and we can all only strive to do better in our service to the gods. Penance is not meant to be easy. But necessary for growth when we err. It forces us to take a hard look at our actions and find ways to improve. I pray for both Duchess Vanora and Fatima, that they may both find favor in the eyes of the gods amd the Compact once more.

The duty of the Scholar is to educate. Recently, I have welcomed Scholar Rinel back into the ranks of Vellichor's Disciples in recognition of the completion of the penance that I had assigned to her, and on the recommendation of Radiant Bliss Whisper, and with the approval of the Dominus. We are pleased to have her back, along with her insights.

She is correct. Archscholar Py did write a Treatise on Truth and Falsehoods, in which he did touch upon how he and his brothers and sisters of the time prayed upon the matter of truth being relative to perspective. They prayed to Limerance and to the Sentinel, but in the end it was found that the rite of trial by combat falls within Gloria's domain. This should not be in dispute, for it is a long-held tradition within the Compact. The accused may ask for a trial by combat, even for petty crimes, and the outcome determines the Truth behind a dispute, where otherwise no clear truth is evident.

At the same time, it should be noted that justice must be observed, and this is the Sentinel's province. If a Magistrate of the Courts has decreed that the accused has chosen Trial by Combat, then perhaps an overlap may be present. This does not make one right over the other. They are both relevant. A Magistrate of the Court has made a decree, which should be heeded by the laws of the Compact. If the young man, Ras, has chosen trial by combat, leaving his fate in the hands of the Gods, then this should be respected as his path to Truth. If trial by combat seems inappropriate to the crime, then a Champion surely has the right to refuse, and then that matter is perhaps best addressed directly with the parties involved, rather than through debate within the pages of the Whites. If Lord Alban Farshaw has decided to drop all charges and settle the matter in private, this, too, should put the matter to rest.

The Godsworn serve all of the Pantheon. As such, I think it is not unreasonable that sometimes, we may recognize that the ideals of the Gods may overlap in a given situation, but that does not invalidate the relevance of one ideal over another. Both can be applied here: Justice and Honor. Sentinel and Gloria. It need not be any more complicated than this. What matters is that Honor be upheld and Justice served in the eyes of the Gods.

I do not personally know well the parties involved in the original dispute which sparked this debate, so I have no stake here other than education. I am not writing here to judge anyone, or dress anyone down, nor do I take any side over the other. These are merely my personal observations after the past few days of reading white journals on this subject.

The Scholars of Vellichor often work closely with the Shrine of the Thirteenth. There are several reasons for this. First, we have shared a mutually respectful relationship with one another on the grounds that we share a vested interest in asking questions. While Scholars ask questions of a more academic nature, the Mirrormasks ask those questions which are designed to look within oneself for answers. One is not greater than the other. Both are equally important to understanding ourselves and the world in which we live.

Second, both Scholars and Mirrormasks often both act in the role of confessors. Many come to us Scholars with questions which may touch upon your personal story. We record your black reflections and guard them, and should we fail to do so, the Shrine of the Thirteenth is our destination. This is why, when a prospective disciple of Vellichor prepares to take his or her vows, they first spend a week within the Shrine of the Thirteenth as a reminder of the weight of those vows. Mirrormasks are there to advise and make you take a hard look at yourself and your motivations. It is not always pleasant or a comfortable situation, but it can have value.

Archlector Vayne has been both patron and friend to me personally, and while some of his advice has been difficult at times, I can always count on him to reflect back to me the truths that I hide even from myself. I have the greatest respect for the role of the Mirrormask.

A question is 'legitimate', in my opinion, if both the question and the answer allow for growth and greater understanding.

In the Mourning Isles, there is a particular little white flower which is so fragrant and beautiful, yet they are also very understated. They grew in abundance, clustered wild along the coast in the tall grasses and sandy beaches beneath the shadow of a cliff near a particular port where my father's ship was berthed at one point. I was too young, I think, to remember precisely where. One of the few fond memories I have is of getting to leave the ship, walking along the beach looking for seashells, and my father putting a sprig of these flowers in my hair. I don't remember much else, but I do remember those flowers. My childhood memories are always so hazy, like trying to sail a ship through the fog with no lantern.

I suppose, though, if I were to be a type of flower, it would be those little white blossoms, though their name I do not know. I still remember their scent to this day, mingled with the scent of the Mourning Sea, accompanied by the sound of gulls wheeling and crying. The sun was setting, the tide beginning to roll in, and these little blossoms, being of a night-blooming species, were just beginning to open. For one of the few times I can recall, my father seemed to show a hint of something close to affection, beneath the hardened ship's captain that he was. One had to be hard, after all, in his line of work. These little white flowers... they were soft, but not delicate; they are tenacious, and weathered many a storm, and still they clung to the earth in spite of everything. Against tide, wind and storm, they persisted.

Strange how something so simple as talk of flowers can stir memories long-forgotten. Yes, if I were to be a type of flower, it would be those tenacious little night-blooming flowers of no particular name that I am aware of.

This was before the attempted mutiny, of course. Though he overthrew the mutineers, he was never quite the same after that, I think. It was only a few years later when his ship was destroyed, and I was taken in by House Thrax. Thirteen years ago, now. He's been gone for thirteen years.

July 1, 2019, 5:18 p.m.(5/20/1011 AR)

Last night, the Vellichorian Academy hosted the representatives of Cardia to answer some of your questions. Previously, we hosted the Emissary from the Undying Empire. Now that we have had a chance to hear from both of these representatives in great detail, I would like to take some time to discuss this in more detail. I understand there have been many wondering why we would do such a thing, when the ideals of these foreign cultures are so different from our own. And much of it has to do with what I mentioned in my previous journal entry, regarding truth.

Prince Alecestazi does have a point, in that truth often seems based on one's perspective. We see a prime example of this in the views of our foreign visitors. We Arvani see things from one perspective. The Undying Empire may see it from another. And Cardia sees the situation from their own point of view. But somewhere within these three viewpoints, there is truth. We need not abandon our Faith to view it. Indeed, our Faith requires that we seek knowledge, even unto considering viewpoints that are different from our own. Vellichor's Psalms state clearly,

"A hungry mind is an open mind.
When the mind is closed and says 'This cannot be', it will never learn.
Yet when truth is held before the closed mind, it cannot allow truth to stand.
The closed mind will act against the truth to erase it from the world.
The closed mind will seek to make the world in its own image.
The open mind must be hungry; it must also accept what is no matter the form taken by truth.
Truth wears many cloaks."

While these visitors may not share our Faith, our beliefs, our ideals, our values... they each have a unique perspective, and this can give us valuable insight into the situation which lies before us.

What we can take away from this is that each perspective acknowledges at least the following truths:

1. Faith: While the Cardians do not share our faith, let us look more closely at the words that they say. They do not worship our gods, but neither do they deny the existence of the Pantheon. The Undying Empire continues to adhere to what they call the Grace of the Thirteen. Cardia would abolish our Faith, which is clearly not acceptable. Jadairal adheres to a practice that clearly falls outside the ideals of the First Choice. However, no side - Cardia's, Jadairal's, or our own - denies the existence of the Gods. Therefore, this must be truth.

2. The Day of Betrayal: Each side acknowledges that something terrible happened in Cardia, long ago, which caused a great rift within the very fabric of our combined societies. But what is it, exactly? What happened? It is this: The majority of the Metallic Order perished. Each side has their own version of the tale to tell. The Cardian emissary insists that it was the result of incursions into their lands, and a failed peace treaty which resulted in their obliteration of those we here in Arvum revere as heroes. Jadairal blames Cardia, and insists that the Metallic Order was betrayed. The Undying Empire weeps for their loss, while the Cardians appear to look upon the whole thing with disdain. And we, here in Arvum, revere the Metallic Order as beacons of hope, and seek to live up to their example. Their memory is enshrined within the Hall of Heroes here in Arvum, for their many honored sacrifices.

A terrible thing happened that day: A loss so profound that the land itself in that place has turned to desolate wasteland. No living thing can grow there. This event is the source of the conflict between both Cardia and the Undying Empire, and yes, our story is tied in with this event as well, in a very important way. Another thing to consider is that things may not always be as they seem on the surface. There are many layers involved here, many truths wrapped within vague and carefully-couched words, if you know where to look. And while each version of the story is different, all sides acknowledge that it happened. Therefore, this event must be truth.

3. Arvum: The Undying Empire and Cardia both have come to our shores, claiming they wish to aid us. But think upon the reason why. Ask yourself, 'Why is Arvum so important?' Lord Sulla claims that it is not. That we are merely a provincial backwater that the Cardians wish to claim before the Undying Empire. But if you read between the lines, listen to the things that are not said, you can understand, I think, that Arvum is vitally important. Otherwise, why would they have any interest at all? Jadairal recognizes Arvum's importance, but they do not speak specifically of why. We are not merely neutral ground. Quite the opposite. We are the glue that holds it all together. And this is the vital, fundamental truth.

The Compact has made its decision, and these attempts to gain understanding from both of our foreign guests have not in any way been in an attempt to change that decision, nor challenge your Faith, but to simply understand their world view. We must come to terms with these truths so that we might learn and stand on our own, and our faith in the Gods must not waver.

I hope that this has been an enlightening experience for everyone. I know that not everyone will agree with my decision to allow these foreign visitors to speak at the Academy. But, I am at a point in my life where I am ready to step outside the shadow of disapproval, in order to bring you knowledge. What you do with it, and what context you take it in, is your decision and responsibility. But truth... it can be held up to many different lenses, and still shine through. A thing to consider. In the coming weeks, I will make effort to bring other speakers to the Academy, and may speak on some matters myself. In the meantime, never stop learning and growing.

In faith,

Archscholar Sina

June 27, 2019, 1:49 a.m.(5/11/1011 AR)

Over the past few weeks, I have been quietly reading through white journals submitted to the Great Archive. Many topics have come up. Slavery and thralldom. Birds and the little snippets of the lives of the people of the Compact. Dreams and memories, ambitions and hopes, fears and worries and words written in the form of letters to lost loved ones (or living ones). I've seen fictional stories of far-off places written in beautiful prose mingled with things that border on the edge of outright blasphemy. I've seen others criticizing writers for what they choose to share within their white journals.

On Mother Ailith's advice, I looked back through older white journals, picking out all of Beloved Aldwin's entries. He was Archscholar before Mother Bianca, and of course, later went on to become Dominus, and was beloved of the Gods. One thing that struck me about his writing is that his words were eloquent, truthful, and did not shy away from speaking the hard truths of the day. This was during a troubling time as we woke to our history, struggling to find our way, learning that there was much we had forgotten. Beloved Aldwin's journals are a shining example, in my opinion, of what a white journal should be. Not only did they record the events of the day, but they also revealed to us a glimpse of his personality, his love for the Compact and the Gods, and his admiration for those he worked with. He addressed the issues of the day, openly, honestly and accurately.

I think it is time, then, to address a few matters pertaining to journals. First, think upon the words of the Canticle of Vellichor:

"I am the god of histories, and this shall not be the final chapter of your world. This has cost me more than I hope you shall ever learn, but I ask for but little in return. Let the most studious amongst you take sacred vow to forever guard the knowledge of the world, and allow all among you from the greatest to the least to chronicle their lives in journals so their knowledge may never be lost. Guard it well."

Think about this for a moment. Vellichor made a terrible sacrifice in order to bring us knowledge. We, as Scholars, take a sacred vow to guard that knowledge. It is our most sacred duty. You, the people of the Compact, are charged as a part of your Faith, in honor of this sacrifice, to chronicle your lives here; that knowledge, that history, may never be lost. Together, we are all guardians of knowledge in this way. This is the spirit with which these journals are intended. This is their sole essence. These journals bind us together in Faith, as a people. They are our sacred pact with future generations, and with Vellichor.

What you choose to write here within these pages, is whatever you decide to share with the world, and is intended to honor the sacrifice that Vellichor made for us. Perhaps we do not know what that sacrifice was, but we know that it was terrible. So what you write within these pages matters. But it is a choice, as in all things. It is not for anyone to tell you what you may or may not write within these pages. Only you can decide what to share with future generations. But, sometimes there can be consequences to writing here publicly things that are considered anathema, things that are not considered appropriate by general society, things that are heretical or opinions that are so unpopular that they will cause strife. It is your choice if you decide to reveal things that could damage yourself or the reputation of another. In the end, the choice is yours, what you consider to be worthy of Vellichor, and what you consider worth sharing. But be very certain that you wish to take ownership of what may come from what you write within these pages.

For all the rest, there are the Black Reflections. When a Scholar takes their vows to serve as a Disciple of Vellichor, we speak the following words:

"I am a guardian of testimony. The black reflections are a sacred bond between a soul and the gods of the Pantheon. I may record, but that trust must never be violated."

We record your personal and deepest testimony in your black journals within the Confessional in the Great Archive. Those journals are guarded by Godsworn Templars, the Knights of the Library. They are "a sacred bond between a soul and the gods of the Pantheon." Those words are so very important to remember. The Black Reflections are your confessional. Your inner thoughts. As Scholars, it is our sacred duty to guard and protect these. We work closely with the Templars and the Shrine of the Thirteenth to ensure that it is so.

But when you write in your white journal, know that the entire Compact can see your words, and will judge you. History will judge you, in some cases harshly, and decide whether the words you have written within these pages are worthy of Vellichor. Most importantly: Truth. When you write here, consider this: are you giving an accurate representation of history in this moment? Will future generations look back on your words and understand them as truth? Will your words give the people of the future a vision of what it was like, to live in this day and age? Or will your words give a misleading representation of our lives, our faith, our heritage?

Again, what you write within these pages is your choice. But, be certain of the legacy you leave behind, because it does matter what you write here. And be certain that you are honoring Vellichor in the way that is appropriate - in the spirit with which these journals are intended.

The Great Archive is not a place for experimentation, as such has a likelihood to go awry and put the knowledge there in danger. With this in mind, in support of the pursuit of knowledge, we will be looking at building a proper laboratory in the Academy. When we invite guest speakers to come and share their knowledge at the Vellichorian Academy, we offer them our hospitality. They are under the guest right of the Scholars, and therefore should treated with respect and courtesy due a teacher or a lecturer, whether you agree with them or not. In the future, those who cannot be respectful of speakers invited to the Academy, regardless of where they are from and whether you agree with them, will be asked to leave and will not be invited back. The way the Emissary of the Undying Empire was treated was appalling, and shameful.

The Emissary wrote to me, asking if she might come and speak about her homeland and the question of Writs. Many people had been writing letters to her, curious about these things. Rather than addressing each one individually, she took a risk and came to me, hoping for a way to answer everyone's questions. And she was treated with scorn and ridicule, and sometimes outright aggressive rudeness.

This cannot abide. In the future, should I invite other guests to speak at the Academy, I trust that the Academy's simple rules of etiquette will be respected.

Life among the Scholars of Vellichor has been quite busy of late after my return to Arx from the Oathlands and the North, as we work on a number of projects, including a refurbishment of the Great Archive. We have been busy re-binding books that have been falling into disrepair, brightening faded illuminations, sorting, shelving, organizing, scrivening, cleaning and generally doing good work. I was pleased today, too, to raise Brother Gregory to the rank of a full Disciple of Vellichor. It was good to see so many Scholars gathered together in the Shrine to witness his vow-taking. I have also initially given approval for his idea of a tea room within the academy, so please, no letters are necessary to convince me. However, should you have ideas for what such a tea room should include, please feel free to reach out to Brother Gregory.

Meanwhile, I have about forty other projects that I am working on, so I do apologize if I am slow to respond these past few weeks.

Another year has come and gone, and I am another year older. It has been quite the eventful year, with so many things happening throughout the city and the Compact, and I managed to forget my birthday once again. One of these years, perhaps I will remember it in time to plan some sort of event. I am, admittedly, bad about it.

Things have been moving apace. There are so many things that I have been dabbling my hands into that I barely have time to rest. I was happy to appoint Lady Lailah Bisland as Magister of the Academy, however. I think this will help to lighten the burden on both Lady Delilah and myself as we move into the coming year. I have no doubt that she will do the position justice, and thank all of those who applied.

Now, I have a great number of meetings to catch up on. Many have reached out to me, seeking this or that. Some of those things, such as joining the Academy, will now be delegated to the new Magister. Other things, of course, cannot be delegated. I hope to arrange those meetings within the coming weeks, and catch up on the backlog of matters that need my attention.

It's been a little over a year since I became Archscholar, and I suppose I should take a moment to reflect on our accomplishments. The Scholars have been pleased to sponsor some of Princess Helena's poetry readings, which I hear are a smashing success. We have assisted with a number of projects, including the new Twinbridge University, an important research project, the replacement of the bookshelves in the Great Archive with chained bookcases, and we have also assisted a number of refugees in finding work and education here in Arvum in a project headed by Princess Katarina and ARRG. We also assisted Sir Andry Bayweather in aiding a number of new Knights of Solace in integrating into the Faith, and we assisted His Majesty and Marquessa Sasha Sanna, Ambassador to the Marin'alfar, with a research project. Numerous investigations for personal projects, too, have been aided by the Scholars over the past year, and this is an ongoing effort.

Aside from this, numerous lectures and lessons have been given through the Vellichorian Academy, and a number of new books have been submitted for archiving, which I will be catching up on soon. In fact, I am quite astounded by the number of new books, and I am looking forward to making those available once they are properly archived, sorted, and shelved. We have lost a number of Scholars this year, but we have gained many new students and potential Disciples as well. Additionally, Princess Sorrel Thrax was promoted to Senior Scholar on account of her legendary Metallic Cycle for her project; Oswyn Spencer was promoted to Senior Scholar on account of his atlas project; Marquessa Sasha Sanna is nearing completion of her project; and Lord Vitalis Mazetti became a full Disciple of Vellichor.

While we are a fairly quiet Discipleship, our presence is felt and our knowledge valued. I hope that the coming year will result in even more fruitful endeavors as we continue to develop the liaison program and restructure the way the Academy is run. This has been a year of growth, and for me, learning how to become a leader. I am certain there are still many more lessons to be learned, but I feel a little easier with my role now as Archscholar, and hope that I will continue to guide the Discipleship well into the future. I have met so many intelligent, brilliant minds over the past year, and look forward to meeting more.
