Relationship Note on Niklas

Let it be so known for anyone who reads this journal and cares:

Lord Niklas is terrible. I quite like him.

Relationship Note on Aureth

I feel required to ask this of Archlector Aureth simply because of my duty and role in the Church:

Which way are you typically facing when you deliver sermons, Blessed Aureth? Should I be concerned?

Relationship Note on Aureth

I will say that I disagree, in part, with Archlector Aureth's stance on the issue of payment.

I say in part, because it is that very important phrase "like a common merchant" which matters. Nobility should not be advertising their services, running shopfronts, promoting their own goods or creations openly, or the like. That is obviously tasteless, and beneath those who should not be competing with common merchants for their livelihoods.

That said, this does not mean that any member of the nobility is required to give away their expertise and time for free. If someone /chooses/ to make that sacrifice as an act of devotion, then it surely embodies the Virtue of Charity and Gild is pleased, as should be the recipient of that gift. But no one is /entitled/ to free teaching or service from a noble...or anyone else, for that matter. If someone approaches a noble and says, "I want you to teach me," and the noble sets a price on that teaching, then it is perfectly fine. And, generally, necessary to keep people from being drowned in requests for teaching which do not respect the time it took to garner that expertise and learn how to convey it. In fact, my general feeling is that those who are noble and do not otherwise live off of their earnings as teachers should charge higher prices, as there is a level of prestige from learning from such people, /and/ because it encourages people to seek out teachers who actually need the income, and thus charge more reasonable prices.

While Archlector Aureth is entitled to his opinion, understand that neither Duke Gabriel nor Princess Alarissa are out of favor with the Faith for requiring compensation for their time and expertise.

Relationship Note on Niklas

Ahem.

Allow me to extend my full and heartfelt apologies for mis-titling Lord Niklas Kennex. It was unintentional, but still an error that must be addressed. I ask for forgiveness, but if Lord Niklas feels the need for further satisfaction, I am happy to engage a Champion to meet his challenge.

Judgments so far:

The song that Master Niklas has submitted is certainly catchy, and it is perhaps a little /too/ accurate for public distribution. Still, I have found myself humming a likely tune for it.

The song which Master Derovai has submitted fulfills more of the brief, but I confess that it is not quite as catchy as Master Niklas' entry. Still, bonus points for the use of the Saik Greens.

Relationship Note on Itzal

This entry is primarily directed to Master Itzal Culler, but should others wish to give it a try, I will happily judge the outputs:

If you can make a snappy, memorable, child-friendly song which accurately encapsulates the primary duties of the leadership of the Faith, I will pay you 20,000 silver, and see it sung across Arvum. A bonus of 10 thousand silver if you can fit in a verse that reminds people that every godsworn is more than capable of addressing the questions relating to any of the Pantheon, and one does not have to find a priest "of Gild" if one has a question about the goddess - just a priest will do.

Relationship Note on Itzal

As it was asked - so if anyone who makes an effort to pick up these journals wishes to complain about the dry and longwinded nature of this entry...actually, if you are the sort to complain about dry and longwinded journal entries, you are very much reading the wrong one.

But, anyway - the question on the table is "What Does a Legate Do?" and it is a good one. We don't each children, for the record.

The three Legates of the Faith serve as administrative and advisory positions beneath the Dominus of the Faith. Each holds primary responsibility over a Tetrad of Discipleships - mine is Concepts: Limerance, the Sentinel, Gild, and Skald. The Discipleship of the Thirteenth typically reports directly to the Dominus. As it is the Archlectors' and Grandmasters' jobs to manage the day-to-day priorities of their Devoted and their Orders, so it is the Legate's responsibility to ensure that the Archlectors are executing their duties properly, and to provide them whatever support they need for that.

In addition to this, the Legates provide guidance to the Faith on theological matters pertaining to their Tetrads, or theological matters in general, when those matters do not need to be addressed by the Dominus. Each Tetrad has its own requirements as well - Concepts approves noble marriages and has control over the Knights of Solace and their duties; Arts has control of the Templars and of the Scholars, the largest discipleship in the Compact; Creation controls personnel assignments to various parishes across Arvum, and policies regarding tithe collection.

Further, in addition to this, the Legates serve the same purpose as the Voice of a noble house - when required, we speak with the Voice of the Dominus, and can be assumed to have his or her trust in all matters, unless the Most Holy says otherwise. This allows Legates to move troops, make pronouncements and policies, and take care of other matters that the Dominus does not wish to address personally. In concert, the three Legates also stand as the Most Holy's closest advisors, in theory, and are often called to discuss matters that require official Faith stances or actions - the final decision always rests with the Dominus, just as it does with the head of a noble house, but it is the Legates' duty to provide the best advice and guidance they can, from the depths of their experience as theologians and as practicing priests who have worked their way up through the Church.

And there is paperwork. Large piles of parchment, which never really seem to end.

Relationship Note on Itzal

Any godsworn of the Faith can answer questions regarding Gloria's guidance on duels. One does not need to speak directly to a Legate of the Faith to clarify a long-standing tradition that has little theological ambiguity. However, if one should wish to delve deeply into matters of Gloria's theology, and one exhausts the knowledge of the godsworn of your choice, you may also send a letter to the Archlector of Gloria, Blessed Cassandra. She is more than capable of discussing the issue, if she wishes.

And Legate Orazio requires more sleep than he typically gets, these days.

Relationship Note on Itzal

I. Well. I have certainly heard many unkind things said about me and my decisions in recent years, but this is the first time I've been accused of cannibalizing my peers.

For the record, no, I did not eat the other Legates. They passed away, and the Most Holy is still contemplating their replacements. If anyone is interested, searching through the Archives will reveal the announcements of their passing, as well as the memorial actions taken on their behalf. There will be three Legates again, I assure you. There has to be, or else I am going to be found one day, suffocated under paperwork.

Relationship Note on Bliss

Regarding the words of Whisper, Champion, and Disciple Bliss on the subject of duels:

She is absolutely correct. There is no such thing as a 'petty' or 'silly' challenge, and no noble should ever turn down a challenge from a worthy opponent, nor should they fail to challenge when their honor is slighted, even in the small ways. This is the mechanism by which we keep those petty slights from escalating to grievous grudges that cost people their lives when houses go to war over a feud that started when someone felt snubbed at a party, did not challenge, and that tiny core of resentment grew until it colored every interaction.

Duels are how nobles maintain their public honor, and how houses make sure that small disputes don't become dangerous disputes.
Challenge others.
Use a Champion so that the rest of us enjoy it.
Win graciously, lose honorably.
And then? Drop the subject of the dispute.

A stack of copied entries from the journals is staring at me. At least one invokes Skald, and another Gild, which both fall under my purview, so, gods help me, I shall address the matter:

Knowledge and expertise are valuable commodities, and should be valued. And, unfortunately, people often do not value that which they are handed for free - thus it becomes an expectation. When people who have significant duties are approached for the sharing of a language, or knowledge, or any other tutelage, they are well within their rights to put a value on their time and expertise. Gild honors charity, but she does not demand that you must give away everything you own just because someone else wants it.

This is true even of the nobility. Now, it would be frowned upon for many reasons for a noble to be so crass as to advertise their services along with a fee schedule, like a common merchant. However, if you wish to learn from someone, they are well within their rights to require an investment for the time, effort, and value they are imparting, whether that be silver, or favors, or gifts. In truth, a noble should never have to convey that expectation explicitly, for the one who seeks to learn should come prepared with a gift of gratitude for being considered as a student, equal to the value the student places on the service provided.

Anyone is thoroughly well within their rights to turn down any student who believes the tutoring they seek is worth nothing.

Relationship Note on Edain

Prince Edain speaks with wisdom in his most recent journal entry, and more, he speaks with a good heart.

What many nobles do not thoroughly realize is that they (or we, for although I am godsworn, I was raised with the obligations of the nobility on my heart) are some of the very few members of the Compact who have never had to work for their living. Oh, certainly, good nobles DO work, just as good priests do, in the duties they have been given. But members of the Church and the nobility exist, ultimately, on the blood, sweat, and labor of the commoners who we are meant to protect, to serve, and to form an example for. If a noble takes the tax revenue generated by his people, and does not serve them in return, then none can call them to account except the head of their house, or perhaps a liege, if a liege wishes to risk her other vassals becoming upset at her meddling. A noble may not be arrested by a commoner, and may only be judged by their peers. A noble has privileges in every aspect of their lives that even a wealthy commoner may not match. It is a position of great power that one is born into.

Which is why it has always been taught that it is a position of great responsibility, as well. The job of a noble, that which they receive all that hard earned tax money from, is to lead and represent their people, to the best of their abilities, in all aspects of their lives. We hold the oaths of a noble to a high standard, because all that binds us together as a people are the oaths of our leaders. It is only oath which makes it safe for merchants to travel through a lord's lands - for if the lord wished to seize the merchant's goods, and none as powerful as the lord spoke out against it, what recourse would the merchant have? It is only oath which makes it safe for lords and their people of different fealties to meet together and discuss issues and disputes without bloodshed - for if one lord were to slaughter another at one of these meetings and take their land, only the oathbound allies of that lord would move to intervene, and if oaths no longer matter then those lords could easily decide it was not worth the shedding of their own people's blood. This is why guest right is enshrined in our culture. Marriages among the nobility are meant to ensure the continuance of houses, and to promote and protect the best interests of the people we serve - it is our duty, rather than our pleasure, although the word 'duty' does seem to be falling out of fashion of late. Without being able to trust our oaths given to one another, every man or woman would stand alone, every fealty would be an island to itself, and we might as well simply fall back into the tribes we had before the Compact.

There are many people who defend the breaking of oaths with "What is the harm, if it makes them happy?" or "It is only a small oath, of no consequence." And yet, it is in the keeping of the small oaths where we prove ourselves worthy of the great. Would any of us trust a man who regularly lies about his own words to give the testimony which would decide whether someone lives or dies? More, it is in the keeping of our oaths that we maintain the trust of those who we have power over. This is as true for the Church as it is for the peerage - we are both, if we are honest, recipients of charity, relying on the generosity (and the sworn oaths) of those who take on the backbreaking work that keeps the Compact going.

If we cannot keep our oaths before our people, then how can we expect them to keep their oaths to us?

Relationship Note on Khanne

Those who know me will know that I have my own issues with the shamanistic paths, and am somewhat rarely in agreement with the practitioners of them, particularly in regards to where they fit within our society. However - I have rarely heard a statement I agree with more than Lady Khanne Halfshav's recent entry regarding the vows of marriage and the duties of fidelity. It is written with wisdom and in the spirit (ha - forgive me) of good leadership.

Divorce is always a tragedy, and always a breaking of sworn oaths given unto the gods. There are very few cases where anyone would encourage a lawfully joined couple to become divorced. The Lady Vanora has claimed that the Dominus encouraged the severance of her marriage. He did not do so publicly, and he did not do so to me, as Legate of Concepts, although he did suggest that it be permitted, since the marriage contract was largely useless and ill-considered in the first place, the houses involved had invested very little fidelity or consideration into the union, and no major treaties would be broken thereby. But if he did encourage it, I can only assume that it is because there was something so terribly wrong with the marriage that remaining within it would have been more of an offense to the gods than leaving it, and I respect his silence in the matter - although the Faith does not appreciate any lord or lady speaking for the Dominus without evidence, and the Lady Vanora's status as Disciple Leader, which she has used to justify the righteousness of her actions, may need to be reconsidered in light of her use of the position of trust granted to her in such a fashion.

And that, ultimately, rests on the heads of the heads of houses who do not exercise the proper thought and consideration regarding the sealing of marriages. A failure of judgment that I fear has been repeated by so hastily tossing the Lady Vanora into another marriage so soon after she has already broken her vows. It is my hope that this new marriage honors the gods at least as much as the last match dishonored them.

I regret that I was not able to send out gifts to everyone in my life who deserves one - time rather got away from me, and I was only able to send out a fraction. Still, I hope that the gifts I was able to send out were, in some way, well received.

Relationship Note on Samantha

In regards to the Marquessa Deepwood's musings, around this date (cross-reference as needed):

Allow me to clear up the questions you have asked:

Yes, it will endanger them. Yes, it will endanger you. To live is to be in danger, and at some point in our lives everyone's suffers, and everyone dies. Those are simple realities of the world, of /any/ world, that we might possibly live in.

But it is not the whole of reality. While choosing not to bring new life into the world will spare that potential life suffering, it will also deny it joy, love, the chance to grow wise and strong, and deprive the world of all the good that they could accomplish within the span of their life, however long or short it might be.

There are many valid reasons to remain childless, including that you simply do not wish to have children (provided that one does not have a duty to produce heirs). But one does not honor Gloria nor the Queen of Endings and Beginnings with such reasoning.

In regards to the comments made in Princess Ann's journals (crossreference dates as interested):

The Faith honors the brave sacrifice of the people of Stormwall, and is pleased and honored to be able to participate in helping them rebuild.
