Relationship Note on Eleyna

If I had ever a daughter, I imagine she would be something like you.

"And thus they whittled away the whims of the fools that surround them,
For how cruel is it to let the dolts stand whole, unbroken and astounded?
When the day ends and we have our pounds of flesh, sardonic stratagem,
What jovial glee we shall have as they flee, tails tucked and absconded."

My father he shouted, "He needs to be clouted, his teeth on a wreath I'll hand him!"

My mother she cried as she rushed to my side, "You're a brute and you don't understand him!"

So they sent for a witch with a terrible twitch to ask how my future impressed her. She took one look at me and cried, "He, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, *HE*! What else could he be but a jester?"

A jester? A jester? A funny idea, a jester. No butcher, no baker, no candlestick maker, and me with the look of a fine undertaker impressed her as a jester? But where was I to learn any comical turn? It was not in a book on a shelf. No teacher to take me, to mold me and make me a merryman, fool or an elf.

But I'm proud to recall that in no time at all, with no other recourses but my own resources, with firm application and determination... I made a fool of myself!

When the fuck did everyone suddenly become a poet?

I have plenty of apples, numerous and various in taste and hue.

Years, and a lifetime ago for me, Giovanni got all choked up and found himself catching a horrible case of death.

While I have found myself choked up on the same bitter wine, I managed to master the 'fall down and twitch routine' enough that I came back. He didn't and at times I'm left wondering if the wrong brother was spared as some joke the gods have denied me the punchline to.

What I am left with is the whelp turned Sword, my nephew. Truth be told, he is more like me in temperament than he has ever been like his father. That whole 'nature versus nourishment' argument I hear the philosophers prattle on about when they're in their cups.

He has gone and married himself a Princess now, and I can't help but wonder where the fuck that leaves me in the social pecking order? Poison tester and right hand (actually left-handed) man of the Grand Duchess, turned Harlequin, turned...I do not know what.

At the very least I have some new material.

Enjoy the gift, kiddo. You may have gone and gotten yourself a new title, but that doesn't mean you are spared my special brand of doting.

It is unpardonable conceit not to laugh at your own jokes. Joking is undignified; that is why it is so good for one's soul. Do not fancy you can be a detached wit and avoid being a buffoon; you cannot. If you are the Court Jester you must be the Court Fool. But oh, how oft the jester proves to be brother to the sage.

Okay, so bear with me here, I know we have pissed off potential allies because some Northern prince is more fool than I, a whole slew of bad nasties want to kill us and now we're starting to gnaw at our own limbs....BUT!

Is no one really going to comment on the fact the Iron Guard locked up a bushel of apples?

My dearest Nephew, Talen...

You missed the perfect opportunity to make a jest concerning going sailing without a mast.

Don't send flowers, send a tincture.

At least one way of measuring the freedom of any society is the amount of comedy that is permitted, and clearly a healthy society permits more satirical comment than a repressive, so that if comedy is to function in some way as a safety release then it must obviously deal with these taboo areas. This is part of the responsibility that must be accorded to us jesters, that nothing be excused the searching light of comedy. If anything can survive the probe of humour it is clearly of value, and conversely all groups who claim immunity from laughter are claiming special privileges which should not be granted.

Relationship Note on Ianthe

Haven't heard from her in a while, no, not the Nightingale. Interests have a way of waxing and waning on either side of the spectrum, yes. I do hope her trades have improved, whatever she was trading.

I still get asked however, "Did she want the B?"

Relationship Note on Eleyna

The Princess is harder on herself than she should be, but the facade will never crack. The porcelain is too finely crafted, too beautiful to ever show a blemish. I would see her smile - even if it was out of cruelty.

Thus far, the best match to my wit and exchange of slights.

I do love to leave her pondering; do I see the spider or do I see the web?

Relationship Note on Esera

I see so much of your mother in you, but you are your own woman in so many other ways. You have made her missions yours. Admirable, and you have my accolades, but let us consider for a moment what burdens you would shoulder were hers stripped away?

I thought my service for Velenosa and usefulness would have died along with her, but you have given me a renewed purpose and for that I thank you. I'll keep my promises.

We'll laugh, we'll smile, and they'll be none the wiser.

Relationship Note on Ianthe

A woman that has many stories and likes to be the subject of just as many, if not more. If her smile doesn't inspire them to be written than her smirk most certainly will.

She puts on a beautiful performance when she wants to. We'll see how my lessons help.

Relationship Note on Talen

The nephew, now Sword of Velenosa. I have always been fond of him and always will. Like his father before him, he has a sense of duty and tightened jaw seriousness that requires my constant attentions to keep him in good humor - never publicly of course. We can't tarnish that blackened steel veneer with a smile.

The Duke may have been tasked with his upbringing, my brother's last wish, but it doesn't mean I don't feel a touch of responsibility for the boy. Blood is blood.

Relationship Note on Calypso

There rough stones, that once polished turn into the most radiant gemstones. The Lady looks as though she is working backwards. Gorgeous, gracious with her presence and kind words, yes, but still the 'tough' 'tude looks more an act than I could write. She is a good wine-pusher, when someone else isn't trying to push it for her or tell her how to market her own product. She may have called that a smirk, but I think that is the only way she knows how to smile.

Relationship Note on Salazar

Never has the South seen such a vivid array of plummage, the colorful bird puffing out its chest and gracing us all with its presence and generosity. Plenty of self-plucked feathers in his cap, this one, along with that illustrious and conversation piece headdress he had. Such a fine pirate of he can sail on any wind, and in any storm. And if the gales fail? I am certain he can sail thrice around the world with the hot air from his lungs.

If I ever find need to kill myself, I'll simply climb his ego and jump to his intellect.
