The Wolf of the North is an impressive man who is not easily persuaded. He has taught me much about life in the North and expect him to continue teaching me valuable lessons one could only gain through experience. I find myself quite enthralled by his presence. How could I not?

Father's put me in charge of gathering together the masons and anyone looking to decorate -- I get to pretend I'm the Voice of Halfshav until it's over.
What do you think I should decorate it like? Wouldn't it be funny to put seashells and satin in the rooms instead of fur and iron?

Relationship Note on Vercyn
Wolves are fiercely protective of their own, and Duke Halfshav is no exception. My father trusted him to lead our forces into battle, and it seems to have been well-placed. Vercyn has been a family friend for ages, and I quite admire him: he can hold his whiskey like a true northman, and his eye for strategy is second to none. I hope to learn a lot from him.

By the way he dresses and talks, one might not realize he was a Halfshav. Or Brianna's father. The man bet against me and lost, and while it was quite a pretty penny to have turned over to Piglet, he did win out when he 'left me no choice,' but to have wine with him.
We won't talk about the wine.

Relationship Note on Vercyn
Vercyn and my father were drinking buddies, though two greater opposites you could not imagine. Vercyn is dark and polished, inspiring awe in some and outright fear in others. Father was red of face and hair and always laughing, a gentle soul too soft for Stonedeep. I love beauty as my father did, but maybe he wouldn't have gotten lost if he'd had some of Vercyn's common sense.

One could make the error of assuming Duke Vercyn Halfshav is a kind, compassionate man of affable disposition. It would be an easy error to make, really. He is startlingly talented at projecting all those things to an excess that would put many Lenosian courtiers to shame. But he is a Halfshav, and it would be foolish for any to forget that, even for a moment. Some errors are costly, indeed.

The Duke of House Halfshav is a personable older gentleman. We met while watching Lady Kima Saik's bout with Princess Marian Valardin. He offered a decent wager on 'the redhead,' on no other basis I can discern but pride in that common hair color of men and women from the North.
Some might judge this foolish. I do not.
Someone who has that much pride and confidence in his fellows can win fierce loyalty. His money may be gone - I passed it on to the true victor, Lady Kima - but consistently expect the best, and you have greater odds at receiving it.
I met his bet with one on Lady Kima for the same reason. I had not seen her fight in years. Might I have been backing a losing candidate? Perhaps, but I always support those who support me.
If I had lost the wager, it would still have been a thousand silver well-spent.
Duke Vercyn, I must also note, has excellent manners. He seems quite taken with Princess Valencia Redrain (nee Velenosa), as well, perhaps because she invites courtesies.
Is the North a place where my lord Vercyn has little opportunity to practice such ways? I do not know, but I intend to find out.

Relationship Note on Vercyn
Duke Vercyn is a great man who ended the threat of many of the worst shav tribes and has been fighting for years for Redrain. As a father, he is infuriating. Controlling, angry, always wishing to tell me precisely how to live, who I can talk to, what I might do, trying to guide every step while being at the same time distant, cold and scheming. A great man, and a terrible, terrible father, who seems not to care for family at all, only for how they reflect upon him.
