Lady Carita's Appeal

Abolishing Thralldom would be a nightmare. Some of the traditionalists might be hyperbolic about that, and some are the kind of reactionary, brutish warriors that fear change every bit as much as their terrible reputations claim. But not that many. Most are just keenly aware of the sort of chaos that could potentially follow if not done extremely delicately for the hundreds of thousands of Thralls throughout the Isles. Lady Carita Darkwater very clearly lays out that she is on the side of progressives in wanting to finally abolish slavery-in-all-but-name, but that the grave consequences for doing so should not be the Isles' burden to bear, if the Compact wishes to keep pressuring the Isles to change. In effect, she asks the Compact to put its money where its mouth is, which the traditionalists greatly approve of, and which even progressives would largely see as necessary. By most estimates, it would take somewhere between ten to fifteen year's worth of a domain's GDP to completely replace the effects of thralldom and phase it out entirely in a way that won't destroy livelihoods and create a crash. The Isles are currently fighting a conflict against a pirate king called the Gyre, and it hardly seems reasonable to many in the Isles that they should bear the burden of that at the same time as completely replacing their economic system. They need help, and if the Compact wants to see change, it cannot be Thrax's burden alone.
